PETKO ATANASOV

IM (1983) Petko Atanasov was born in the village of Karan Varbovka, ouside Ruse, Bulgaria, in 1948. During the period 1963-66 he was Bulgarian National Junior Champion three times. He participated in three Sudent Olympiads for his country, taking the gold on third board in Austria in 1968. From 1976 through 1991, he was a professional chess trainer at the Dunav Chess Club in Ruse. Atanasov trained Topalov from 1986 to 1991.
