Domdaniel: I played Joe Ryan twice in the late 80s. I was Black in both games, which started 1.e4 e6 2.Qe2 -- the Chigorin Variation, inhibiting an immediate ...d5 and usually leading to a type of King's Indian Attack. It seems to be popular among players, like Ryan, who play the French themselves as Black and have no desire to enter main lines as White.

Our first game, in the final round of the Greystones tournament, was a draw -- giving him 1st place in the event, and me 2nd. He won our next game, in a qualification event for the Irish championship.

Domdaniel: It is curious just how many of the stronger Irish and Irish-based players regularly play the French Defence. In the 1970s, books on the French published by Batsford included works by Moles, Heidenfeld and Harding -- the first two were Irish champions while the 3rd played on the Olympiad team. More recently, IM Sam Collins wrote a book on the Advance Var.

Other strong Irish players using the French: Walsh, Ryan, Short.

Dec-16-15  TheFocus: I guess the Irish and the French have always gotten along together well.
