May-16-07 | | vonKrolock: Erbo Stenzel (1911-1980) Brazilian teacher, sculptor and chess-player. He is the author of many important public monuments in Curitiba, capital of Paraná State, like, for instance the granit panel remembering the saga of the immigrants amd pioneers (a detail can be seen in this link http://www.curitiba-parana.net/arti...) in the same square can be seen his famous 'naked couple' (two giant statues of stone portraiting the 'man and woman of the future' - work from around 1953) Also a passionated chess-player, Stenzel's most known performance was his first place in the South-Zonal from 1965 in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul - possibly the last time that Mecking was not the winner in such an event (National or Continental) in his ascension period ('South-Zonal', with players from Brazil's southern States) cross-table and all the games here http://www.brasilbase.pro.br/br1965... (in October 1979, his city homaged him with the foundation of the "Clube de Xadrez Erbo Stenzel" - the director of the Art Museum that was the first local of the club, Jair Mendes; and the chessical mentor and first instructor of the club, Zalmen Kornin, visited Stenzel in his retreat place (he was suffering from a very painfull type of artritis in the extremities, that impeded that he walked, or worked with the hands... his consolation was Chess - he donated some books to the Club, in this way the library started) |

I perused the pages at http://www.curitiba-parana.net/arti... I had never heard of Erbo Stenzel, either as an artist or a chess player. But I discovered that, as both, he should have some recognition. So, using what information I could find, I made a small page about him: http://sbchess.sinfree.net/ErboSten... |

May-28-07 | | vonKrolock: <SBC> That's really very nice :) Stenzel surely would appreciate the kind gesture - I know that his house - today in Parque São Lourenço (Saint-Lawrence Park) - displayed a 'Chess Room', arranged by L. Holzmann, but I dont' know if some reference is already found on-line. Paraná State, and Curitiba, started a Chess tradition linked to the Portuguese colonization, joined later by all European immigrants - of course that those from Central and East-Europe were among the enthusiasts that collaborated to the organization of Chess life - Stenzel, Bernardo Schulman (Russia 1887 - Curitiba 1971), Otto Mak (Germany 1906-Curitiba 1983), are significant names from the 30s and 40s, others can be mentioned - of course that someone so important also as a sculptor would become more (so to say) 'popular', but it's worth mentioning that, in the Delta-Larousse for 1967, a brazilian Enciclopedia, Stenzel won his entry as *Chess Player* ('enxadrista' in Portuguese). But it's also good to remember that Chess here was purelly amateur - the Tourneys and Championships, for instance, were played (somehow as in xixth Century's North-America or Europe) in holydays, like Easter Week... |

Thanks. That makes the effort worthwhile.

I revised the page to reflect your latest comments. There isn't much at all on the web regarding Erbo Stenzel, so your comments have proved invaluable. Thanks. |

Jun-12-07 | | vonKrolock: "Schachklub Lasker" in Curitiba - In 1929, Stenzel and Otto Mak played a match for the club's championship, resulting in a +4=1-2 score in Stenzel's favour - so, at 17 (or early 18?!) years, he won a match from an european player.
According to Licurgo Holzmann, who also furnished the above information, Stenzel was born in Curitiba (so some on-line source is wrong giving another city as his birth place)
* December 17th, 1911; + July 23th, 1980 |

Mar-14-24 | | Marcelo Bruno: Licurgo Holzmann was my cousin. I met him in 1989 in Curitiba and remarked he liked to play in the romantic style like me. He had some precious chess books at his home. |
