ARTHUR SOUWEINE
(born Dec-25-1872, died Nov-28-1951, 78 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Arthur Jacob Souweine was born and died in New York, NY, USA.

He was born in New York on Christmas Day, 1872. For a short time he lived in Cincinnati, but came to Brooklyn in 1879, where he has resided ever since. At the age of 18 he was taught the moves of chess by his father. In 1890 he joined the Brooklyn Chess Club. Souweine's first performance of any note was a victory over the late W. H. K. Pollock in a simultaneous exhibition. He was also successful against various other performers, including Pillsbury, Kemeny, Lee, Delmar, Richardson, Hanham, and Hymes. In the Metropolitan League championship series of 1894 he placed twice on the champion team of the Brooklyn Chess Club and won both his games. He defeated Ajeeb, the famous Turkish chess automaton, in both chess and checkers. In previous championship tournaments of the Brooklyn Club, in which he competed, he always made an excellent showing. In 1901 he defeated C. Helms to clinch the Brooklyn Chess Club Championship tournament for 1900/01.
