Jan-22-04 | | tvanw55: Just finished Pandolfini's Target Practice. I am a lousy chess player. This book helped out my game immensely. It is clear explanation of tactics. Also entertaining and not too difficult. |
Jan-31-04 | | Dick Brain: What did you think of the sinister portrayal of Paldolfini in "Searching for Bobby Fischer"? |
Feb-01-04 | | square dance: <dick brain> i didnt realise it was sinister. |
Feb-01-04 | | Drstrangelove: Ben Kingsley is the man, I don't know anything about Pandolfini except that he's got a cool name. |
Feb-01-04 | | bilikidder: Pandolfini, along with Shelby Lyman, gained fame as a commentator on the 1972 WCH match. He is a US national master, who is a prolific writer of beginning to intermediate instructional books on chess. |
Mar-08-04 | | bogie: I have seen the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer 38 times. Ben Kingsley is a great actor but his portrayal of Bruce was rather on the dark side. |
Jun-10-04 | | LEA 9100: When will they return ? Replace Sat. morning cartoons with basic chess for kids. |
Jun-11-04 | | dac1990: In SFBF, there needed to be a couple of dark elements to in order to make the movie more interesting. No one's going to like looking at a couple of people pushing pieces for even 5 minutes going over long strings of unintangible analysis, so there had to be another dark element. That was Pandolfini. |
Jul-22-04 | | checkpat: In the book, he is not so dark as in the movie.
He is shown as disliking the "kill -the -other-guy" hype surrounding
Chess and willing to *always* draw.
But as he says:
"to do that you need to be at least Petrossian" |
Jul-28-04 | | chess4games: I like Pandolfini's books "Trap and Zaps" and "The Chess Doctor". It helps me a lot. |
Jul-28-04 | | Spassky69: If Bruce is a FIDE Master, why is there only one game at chess games!? |
Jul-28-04 | | chess4games: <Spassky69> No. Bruce is a International Master. I don't think he is a FIDE Master. |
Jul-28-04 | | chess4games: <Spassky69> Are you Boris Spassky? If you aren't, you shouldn't picked that name. The chessgame host say it is not allowed unless you are THAT PERSON. |
Jul-29-04 | | chess4games: Hey no. Bruce is a National Master. I looked up again and it was a mistake. |
Jul-29-04 | | DutchDunce: Would love to hear some opinions on this: I am somewhat reluctant to read books by non-GM's (Pandolfini, Silman, Reinfeld, etc) because I keep thinking, there must be a REASON they're not GM's - maybe their depth of insight isn't quite at GM level? Or is the chess knowledge presented the same, and the title not important? |
Jul-29-04 | | acirce: Many non-GM's in chess would by far be GM's or super-GM's in chess teaching. Those are two different subjects... You'll learn much more from Silman than from Kasparov. |
Aug-13-04 | | harrmith: This has rapidly become my favorite chess site. I don't know what I like about it best. For example, it's so easy to find and play over master games. It's so easy to find games that illustrate openings or positions. It's so useful to search thru' someone else's laboriously assembled game collections . It's so informative to search key words in the Kibitzer archives and thereby gather instructive advice, interesting arguments interesting comments pro and con and on and on. Wow! No wonder I sometimes spend the whole day with it. Keep it up!! |
Aug-13-04 | | Lawrence: <harrmith>, and where else could you find........US!! :-) |
Aug-13-04 | | QueensGambitAccepted: "Would love to hear some opinions on this: I am somewhat reluctant to read books by non-GM's (Pandolfini, Silman" It depends on a Master's writing style and his/her teaching approach many people swear by Aaron Nimzovitch and his book My System and Silman's Reasses your Chess but it's whatever works for the reader. I prefer the writing style of Siegbert Tarrasch in his book the game of Chess over Nimzo because he is very easy to understand from page 1. Capablanca and Alekhine are also excellent they are very clear and
precise in there books and so is Andrew Soltis and Jacob Aggard. |
Aug-13-04 | | Dick Brain: <QueensGambitAccepted> I think what happens when you are taught by players of much greater talent is that they cannot comprehend why you cannot pick things up as fast as they can. They will grow frustrated and impatient and will believe that you are loafing. |
Aug-14-04 | | Sir Bruce: As far as teaching styles go, I like Pandolfini (ABCs of Chess), but I like Lev Alburt the best. "ABCs" was one of the first books I read and one of the first where I could see that I had improved. I'm working through one of Alburt's books now. |
Aug-14-04 | | Lawrence: Hi <Sir Bruce>, welcome to this great site for improving one's game. |
Aug-15-04 | | Shah Mat: <chess4games: <Spassky69> Are you Boris Spassky? If you aren't, you shouldn't picked that name.> Nice of you to overlook the 30948144 other guys on here who have names like Vishy and Tigran. I don't think anyone is actually going to confuse Spassky69 with Boris Spassky, and even if they did, are you chessgames.com or one of its agents? Didn't think so...so why don't you get off the cross? |
Aug-15-04
 | | chessgames.com: Spassky69 is fine, the rule is that we don't want anybody to name themselves "Arnold Denker" or "Kramnik" unless they are actually the famous player. There is no legendary player named Spassky69. If the real Spassky should come along, I'm sure he'll be satisfied with the handle "Spassky" and there's no harm done. Incidentally, if the player in question is dead this rule does not apply, and in the case of "Vishy", well that's a nickname so we let him get away with it. |
Aug-15-04 | | Lawrence: Wow, <José Raúl Capablanca> is up for grabs. |
