Kibitzer's Corner
May-13-05  Caissanist: Cray Blitz was the best chess program of the early eighties, and the first one to beat a master in a rated tournament. It was written by Robert Hyatt, who later came out with Crafty.
May-13-05  halcyonteam: Thanks, did not know it before.

I think latest crafty is 18.8+ right?

Or has the developement of crafty has stopped?

May-14-05  Caissanist: Hyatt's personal web page can be found at http://www.cis.uab.edu/info/faculty.... It lists Crafty as his primary current research interest, so I assume that he is continuing to develop it. The program is up to version 19.19 at least, with the most recent updates coming within the last few months.
Jul-11-05  fgh: Does anyone know where the game that he won against the master is avaible?
Jan-09-06  Caissanist: I don't have the game score, but I remember that it happened in the 1981 Mississippi State Championship. The computer beat Joseph Sentef, the defending champion and at the time Mississippi's only master. Sentef's loss gave the state championship to an expert who refused to play against the computer.
Jan-09-06  OJC: This is probably the game: from < How Computers Play Chess > by Levy and Newborn.

Cray Blitz won all 5 of its games in the tournament for a performance rating of 2258.

Jan-10-06  Caissanist: Yes, that's it. As I remember it Sentef was very unhappy about the publicity surrounding his loss, which is probably why he is usually listed as "human" in the score of the game. Thanks for taking the time to type this in; I will submit it as a PGN to the site.

Cheating in the World Computer Chess Championship [1986]

"...Let me [Sam Sloan in a team around Rex (Computer) ] just summarize by saying that Cray Blitz (Computer) did not deserve to win that tournament. The winner should have been the Hitech (Computer) program of Hans Berliner. ..."

Nov-30-09  wbport: Being a chessplayer and programmer in Mississippi around 1980 I was quite interested in the Blitz program and its authors. I talked at length with Al Gower for my website: http://bellsouthpwp.net/w/b/wbport/...

Pawn and Two: <Caissanist & OJC> Please check your game score for Sentef vs Cray Blitz - Mississippi State Championship 1981.

Your game score indicates Sentef played 30.Bg2??, which allows 30...Nxf6. It seems unlikely that Sentef would have played 30.Bg2??, and Cray Blitz would not have missed taking the queen.

Instead of 30.Bg2??, Sentef probably played 30.Qg5, and then the game continuation of 30...Qe7 31.Qg6 is logical.

Nov-30-09  RandomVisitor: I can confirm the suspicions of <Pawn and Two>.

The book, Chess Skill in Man and Machine, 2nd edition, p.298, covers this game and reports white's 30th move as 30.Qg5.

Oct-01-12  wbport: The website has changed from my Nov-30-09 post, it is now http://home.comcast.net/~wporter211... The old one will get you there, but may come down at any time (my former ISP).
Feb-04-17  wbport: Am paying for own site now:

Sep-29-23  Caissanist: Warren Porter's websites are all dead now, but his "Memoirs of a Mississippi Chessplayer", which presumably includes what Al Gower told him, is archived here: https://web.archive.org/web/2010020... .
