EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Oct-23-08  wordfunph: Peter (genuine chess addict) was a member of Melbourne Chess Club, was so enamoured with the chess game that back in 1980's, he changed his surname to Caissa (Goddess of Chess).
Oct-23-08  BETASIGMA: Has anyone watched the DVD -Game Over?(Kasparov vs. The Machine)It's more of a documentary on how Kasparov succumbed to DEEDBLUE in 1997. Yeah the film searching for Bobby Fischer is a very inspiring one and due to my stupidity I bought another 1 (innocent moves) not knowing they're one in the same.
Oct-23-08  spawn2: Hi Guys,

Thanks for sharing your darkest secrets: )

I asked the question to let you know that you are not alone in your chess affliction (ako rin gusto ko malaman na di ako nag-iisa). Minsan, iisipin mo na baka me problema ka kasi pag tinignan mo yung cabinet mo, mas marami pang chess books kaysa sa ibang topics kahit pa pagsamasamahin ang mga ito.

I have around 100 chess books and magazine (chess asia), best of chess from 91 to 95. 3 of My great predecessors and around 1500 clippings of chess piece of bobby ang. I started collecting way back in 2000 and am still doing it til now. (bukas nga nasa national na ako pag bukas para makabili ng business world). I also pester mo brother in Canada to send me some chess books (am waiting for the Life and Games of Mikhail Tal)

Pero pag-iniisip ko, kanya kanya lang naman na bisyo to. Yung iba comics, yung iba matchboxs. Tayo chess naman: )

Oct-23-08  CRISMELDRE: <spawn2>:wow,your the real chess addict.For me, i had 2 set tournament size,2 magnetic chess,Chessmaster 9000,chessmaster 10 edition,Junior,chronus chess clock..
Oct-23-08  whiskeyrebel: I've been married over 30 years (we married very young). I try to be selective about what chess events I take her too. She hates being in small playing rooms jammed with dorks who smell bad. She really enjoyed watching me play Susan Polgar in a simul and doesn't mind watching the top boards at a well ventilated event in a hotel. I'm lucky though. Frankly, If your spouse of either sex can't find something to do when you're engaging in your personal hobbie your marriage is doomed anyway. My wife now views my chess holidays as a vacation for her from me.
Oct-23-08  wordfunph: spawn2, i have also a copy of "Life and Games of Mikhail Tal" and also my all time favorite "Sorcerer's Apprentice" by David Bronstein. Tal's book was great...enjoy reading!
Oct-24-08  spawn2: Guys,

With all the chess sets and chessbooks that I have, the most ironic thing is that I have not owned a single chess clock. But am planning to remedy that by buying one come December : )

The best chess book that I have is Russians vs Fischer. In that book, the Russian dissected Bobby's game to find out his strength and weaknesses.

whiskeyrebel, the reason I do not play in open tournaments is because of the same reason you gave. Dorks who smell bad and wears shirt and shorts with matching slippers during the game. I dont want to sound like an inconsiderate prick but the organizers should impose a dress code so that the game will be able to solicit respect from both the general public and sponsors. This was also the problem of billiards in the philippines during the 80's. The public thought that only hooligans/shady characters can excel in the game.

Oct-25-08  nanobrain: <spawn2> At the Cutting Edge (with branches at Megamall, Trinoma, etc) they have the Excalibur Game Time II digital chess clock. Very nice. Costs around P2,600 if I remember right. Speaking of chess addiction, I once played from 9am to 12 midnight nonstop chess WITHOUT EATING OR DRINKING ANYTHING. Occasionally, I would also play 24 hours straight without sleeping, but with food and drinks. After playing 24 hours nonstop, I couldn't sleep. But when sleep hits me hours later, I could sleep 24 hours nonstop also.

Is there already a Guinness Book of Records entry for the longest nonstop chess play?

One chess article says that the greatest chess book ever written is J.H. Donner's "The King". I have read it. But the three chess books I've enjoyed the most are "The Immortal Game: A History of Chess" by David Shenk, "King's Gambit: A Son, a Father, and the World's Most Dangerous Game" by Paul Hoffman, and the one entiled "Smart Chip from St. Petersburg" [Genna Sosonko I think is the author, not sure, my copy was borrowed and has not been returned]. Honorable mention could be "Bobby Fischer Goes to War" by David Edmonds and John Eidinow, and the historical "Birth of the Chess Queen" by Marilyn Yalom.

Oct-26-08  spawn2: Hi nano,

Have a copy of both King's Gambit: a Son, a Father and the World's Most Dangerous Game which I bought in Powerbooks Trinoma and Bobby Fischer Goes to War which I purchased in Powerbooks Megamall. You are right, they are both excellent reading materials.: )

Oct-26-08  wordfunph: To nanobrain: In 1983, Roger Long and Graham Croft (bus drivers) from Bristol England played chess non-stop for 200 hours, it appeared in Guiness Book of World Records. They played 189 games with Long winning 96 to 93.
Oct-27-08  nanobrain: <wordfunph> 8 days nonstop? No sleep? They must have been using shabu, like most bus drivers. No hope for me beating that record. After just 24 hours, my knees shake already, and I begin to fart a lot. <spawn2> Do you know if Stuart Rachels had already finished/published his book "Philosophy Looks at Chess"? Must be another interesting read.

Novels with chess as theme are also good. Some of my recent readings are "The Eight" by Katherine Neville and "The Chess Machine" by Robert Lohr. Victor Korchnoi is a great player, but his autobiography is boring (mainly because he doesn't write well, although his life is dramatic).

Oct-27-08  BETASIGMA: Queens Gambit by Walter Tevis is also an interesting read.
Oct-27-08  wordfunph: I recommend "Hooked on Chess" by Bill Hook and "Los Voraces 2019" by Andy Soltis, though I don't have copies yet. I read cover to cover Frank Brady's "Profile of a Prodigy - Bobby Fischer", a great one!
Oct-31-08  timhortons: is wesley playing in corus group c?

i had recieve these newsletter form icc, why is he not included? can somebody clarify?

Nov-01-08  spawn2: Guys,

I am wondering what Eugene's next tournament will be. He should take advanatge of his good form and play more in order to breach the 2600 mark. Also, I hope he will set it as a personal goal to qualify to the next World Chess Championship. Only four (4) Filipinos have been able to take part on this. They are:

Antonio
Villamayor
Paragua
Dableo

Nov-03-08  Karpov2985: Happy Birthday, Eugene! Hope magtatagal ka pang makapaglaro ng chess at sana ma-break mo yng record sa Olympiad in the future.
Nov-03-08  shintaro go: <timhortons> I think Wesley already confirmed his participation in Corus C as early as July of this year. I don't know of any changes in the plan but I'm pretty confident we will see Wesley next January in Wijk.
Nov-03-08  shintaro go: Make that June 2008.
Nov-03-08  pinoymaster77: Thanks for info. Happy birthday GM Torre! May you have long life, and outlast Korchnoi in playing age!
Nov-03-08  CRISMELDRE: Happy Birthday, GM Eugene Torre..May you have more birthdays to come, more blessings and good health.Regards to your family..
Nov-04-08  Karpov2985: I remember a news item when GM Eugene was doing a movie with Vilma Santos. It was mentioned that they celebrate their birthdays together or a day after each other. How time flies! Now Eugene broke some chess Olympiad records and about to break some more and Vilma is now the governor of Batangas! Who would think of that then.
Nov-04-08  malthrope: Happy Birthday Eugenio!

...and many more! <grin> :)

Nov-04-08  timhortons: <shintaro go>thanks for clarification.

GRANDMASTER TORRE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
