EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Nov-13-08  spawn2: China agad?

Nov-15-08  timhortons: <321ycnay > salamat kabayan.

Nov-15-08  BETASIGMA: LOL timhortons..redhorse ata tinitira dun kaya medyo fast drip from sobriety to intoxication.hehe. pale pilsen lang muna tayo...maiba ako nanalo ba si IM JP Gomez?mukhang mali yung web kase 1:0 pero when I went through the game panalo yung black.
Nov-15-08  BETASIGMA: Oh pls just ignore above. I've checked it on W. So's page.
Nov-15-08  timhortons: grandmaster torre great decision to have wesley rest for coming fight.

IM gomez and GM laylo great win.these is a walk in the park.

great win by norwegian team over the chinese giants! GM Bu Xiangzhi 2714 - <GM Lie Kjetil> A 2526 0-1 deliver the winning thrust. Magnus just draw his game.

japanese team is vastly inferior to its romanian opponent during the 3rd round but kodus to sano tomu elo 2111 for beating a romanian master GM Vajda Levente 2582 , the 3 other japanese non titled player bowed down. the highest rated player of japan in round 3 is elo 2272, i think they should start hiring pinoy master to train there youth just like singapore is doin.

great job canadian team! 4 wins in round 3 over jamaican team.

GM pascal,im noritsyn alias kapamoob at icc,im roozmoon of MONTREAL! AND IM zugic. great job!

Nov-15-08  timhortons: <BETASIGMA> i hope in coming year na may big event ng chess dyan sa london maka swing ako dyan.may pinsan kasi ako dyan e.

Nov-15-08  321ycnay: Walang anu man Kabayan, Tim. Panalo Si Darwin at JP. 2.5-1.5 Good guys!
Nov-15-08  321ycnay: http://chess-results.info/tnr16314....

Scroll till you get to the middle of the pack. That's where we are at.

Nov-15-08  321ycnay: Tumira ako sa Mandurriao, for one year. Sa "housing", if you are familiar where it is at, sa Uncle ko for one year. So yeah, jutay lang kabalo giyud man, Migs.
Nov-15-08  timhortons: < 321ycnay >i know the place.
Nov-15-08  timhortons: <321ycnay>

Nov-15-08  BETASIGMA: tomhortons marami events sa London mostly mga rapid chess.U may check the british chess calendar for events that may suit you timely for your planned trip.Halos every month and for one month there are several events to choose from. What about dyan sa Canada.?I'm currently playing in Wellington College Int'l here in Berkshire field with 3 GMs(GM Nick Pert,Keith Arkell and Alexander Cherniaev plus 3 other IMs and the rest are strong young rated players. Sarap din sumali as an experience but it's hard na makalapit sa top board where GMs and IMs face one another.Magagaling ang traning ng mga bata dito kase well coached sila ng mga masters and regular tournament. You'll see when you visit London.
Nov-15-08  BETASIGMA: England team lng timhortons kase may team ang Scotland and Wales.England sweeped lower seeded Malta by 4-0. Si Adams and Bd 1 nila and Short Bd 2. Di nga nakapasok si Luke Mcshane (oxford U. dropped out) coz of he chose chess full time.Si David Howell and pumalit sa place nya ata.A fast growing player like W. So. Ano opponent kaya ng RP sa rnd 4?
Nov-15-08  321ycnay: Sa Chicago na ako Tim, over 20 years na, since '87.

Siguro, si Bong naman ang pahinga bukas. This olympiade, it seem like there is no "walk in the park day" as Torre earlier stated prior to the first round, unlike in the past where the first few rounds are just stretching and calisthenics.

I'm glad the girls team also won. Good results. Laylo is really playing very good. "Charles" Darwin Laylo, the Rock in the lower boards.

Nov-18-08  timhortons: In the meantime the Philippines climbed into a tie for the 17th place when it beat fast-rising Asian chess nation Iran 2.5-1.5. It will be recalled that chess was banned in Iran by Ayatollah Khomeini after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and their top players (Shirazi, Sharif, Harandi) all left the country to pursue their profession in Europe and America. When chess was restored in the 90s the country had to start from scratch, but now, a little more than ten years later, they are strong enough to field a team of five international grandmasters and are no longer pushovers for any country.

bd 01 Bong Villamayor vs Ghaem Maghamei, 1/2

bd 02 Wesley So vs Moradiabadi, 1-0

bd 03 John Paul Gomez vs Bagheri, 1-0

bd 04 Darwin Laylo vs Mahjoob, 0-1

The world’s youngest GM Wesley So took all of 84 moves to defeat the Iranian board 2. The game started out with an Exchange Variation of the Slav Defense. This line has the reputation of being boring, but the two protagonists were determined to get the full point and had a full piece clash in the middlegame. Wesley had to weather a strong attack and managed to escape to an endgame with queen and two rooks against queen, rook and bishop which he cashed in.

IM John Paul Gomez played a brilliant game where he slowly built up a strong attack against GM Amir Bagheri’s king and chased it all the way to the other side of the board. Then a timely liquidation to paralyze his opponent’s king and knight, and Bagheri had to raise the white flag. http://www.bworldonline.com/BW11190...

Nov-18-08  BETASIGMA: Kaya siguro nabanned kase ayaw nila mamatay yung King nila.Checkmate is somewhat derived from Iranian word shak mat which means the king is dead.--konting trivia lng po.hehe

so di basta basta nga training ang nakukuha nila.
