EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-20-11  kidsgambit2: Ayos, now I know na rin. Sino kaya yung Torre sa database nami? Marami pa namang contributions. he he he he he.
Jul-20-11  shadowleaf04: I watched an interview by Cito Beltran with Eugene Torre a few years ago, right after the 2005 SEA games. Eugene said that it was his father who taught him chess, and he used to play with his brother in order to improve. His brother would give him some cash if Eugene beats him!

Also, ang alam ko pinsang buo nya yung artista na si Joel Torre.

I stumbled into this article by Bobby Ang in 2000

here is the link

"He was born on Nov. 4, 1951, in Iloilo and christened Eugenio, the seventh child in a family of 10 children belonging to Federico Pineda Torre and Vicenta Prieto Oliveros. The Torre household was a chess-loving family. In particular, aside from Eugene, one of his older brothers, Vic Torre, is a National Master and played for the Philippine team in the 1978 Buenos Aires Olympiad. The eldest son Jess (who is now the chief operating … "

Jul-20-11  wordfunph: good find, sir <KG2> thanks!
Jul-20-11  pinoymaster77: Good pm,
Tahimik pa sa game moves.

Nga pala, sa press release right before BOGM4 started, it was announced that 8.5 pts is needed for GM norm.

So, for IM Barbosa its 3.5/6 while for IM 'Colt 45' Nolte eh medyo tough at 4.5/6.

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So will begin his title retention bid in the Battle of the Grandmasters National Championship on Saturday (July 16) at the National Press Club (NPC), in Intramuros, Manila.

So will be gunning for his 4th straight title in the event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

He will have his hands full this time as 8 other GMs and a mixture of established and upcoming stars gang up on him in the Category 11 tournament (average ELO rating of 2508).

The 5 international masters (IM) participating this year need to score at least 8.5 points to get a GM norm.

The event was declared a “closed tournament," which means that the competition will be limited to local players only.

“This is a huge step forward in our bid to produce more grandmasters in our country,” said NCFP President Prospero “Butch” Pichay, Jr.

Seeing action in the tournament are GMs Darwin Laylo, John Paul Gomez, Joseph Sanchez, Roland Salvador, Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla, Eugene Torre, GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio, and Mark Paragua.

“Anything can happen in a round-robin competition,” said Torre, the most successful local player in closed tournaments.

IMs Oliver Barbosa, Richard Bitoon, Rolando Nolte, Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Yves Ranola are also competing.

In the distaff side, Woman National Master (WNM) Rulp Ylem Jose will try to defend her title against a strong field that includes Woman International Masters (WIMs) Catherine Perena and Beverly Mendoza.

The event is sponsored by Pilipinas Shell, Manila Pavilion Waterfront Hotel and Casino, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), NPC, Remate and Hataw. – By Marlon Bernardino

Jul-20-11  pinoymaster77: Yup, panalo na nga GM Torre...
Jul-20-11  RuyLupit: PM 77, puede palang mag GM norm kahit na lahat ng manlalaro ay galing sa iisang federasyon?
Jul-20-11  nanobrain: Looks like 'insan has a killer schedule starting tomorrow: So-Paragua-Bitoon-Laylo-Sanchez. All GMs and all higher rated than him except Bitoon! Kaya mo yan 'insan!
Jul-20-11  pinoymaster77: RuyLupit,
Sounds like it, am not familiar on FIDE rules for closed tournaments...
Jul-20-11  spawn2: Its going to be a Titanic Battle tomorrow! GM Eugenio "The Living Legend" Torre vs GM Wesley "The Chairman" So.

Kung me betting to sa Las Vegas, sobrang dehado si Living Legend ke Chairman. I dont think he can outprepare GM Wes..he may have to adopt GM Spassky's "Clear Head" policy coming into the game tomorrow. One thing is for sure, its going one hell of a memorable game.

Good luck to both at Mabuhay ang Philippine Chess!

Jul-20-11  pulsar: There are exceptions to different-fed norm requirement, and IM Barbosa might fall into one of those. Used to know this stuff, but now I forgot and I'm too lazy to look it up.

<spawn2>Loadless. But I don't think there are opposite camps working for tomorrow's game. One side could be having some help though. ;)

Jul-20-11  pulsar: <nanobrain: Looks like 'insan has a killer schedule starting tomorrow: So-Paragua-Bitoon-Laylo-Sanchez. All GMs and all higher rated than him except Bitoon! Kaya mo yan 'insan!>

On the GM norms, as posted in IM Barb's page, he needs 3/5 pa and per review of his remaining opponents, may chances pa, I would say 50/50. He really has to be in good form and have stamina for the finishing kick...

Jul-20-11  shadowleaf04: Guys check this out. I found a trailer on Youtube of the 1975 movie GM Torre did with Vilma Santos. The title is "Basta't Isipin Mong Mahal Kita." You can see Eugene from 1:30 up to 2:29 in the clip. This was how GM Torre used to look. Must see!

Jul-20-11  wordfunph: <shad> nice one! nakanganga ako while watching, long-hair bradidik nga :)

got this quote from Chess Life and Review..

"You know, acting is much harder than playing chess."

bro..ubos tayo sa post mo! : )

Jul-20-11  wordfunph: ...and these precious quotes from the pride of the Philippines through the years --- Eugenio "Genuine" Torre!

"Like chess, we should always make the right move, we should avoid illegal moves." (on life)

"From age six to fourteen I played chess just for fun. After that things became more serious for me. I began to read chess books like Chess the Easy Way by Reuben Fine. However, Fischer was the player who influenced me the most."

"Bobby will turn in his grave if the inheritance of his daughter Jinky is not awarded by the Icelandic court. I had seen with my two eyes how Bobby lovingly took care of Jinky during her infant days in Baguio, in the Philippines."

Jul-20-11  nanobrain: How about this, my 'insan singing the national anthem of the Torre Page:
