EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jan-09-09  Karpov2985: I was so furious when I read the article about fielding all GMs with ages not over 30 years old. Ano to, age discrimination? If it is a age group competition, yes but Olympiad is open to all ages. Imagine, we have been suggesting NCFP in this website and Wesley's site, on drafting rules for the succeeding Olympiads and other tournaments that will be fair to everyone then we get this kind of article!
Jan-09-09  wordfunph: Nadale mo Karpov2985! Tumpak ka dyan!
Jan-09-09  pinoymaster77: Yes, gulo iyan. I hope na-misinterpret lang previous statement ni Pichay, na being taken in context as a 'promise'.

Aba, sa ibang bansa like the US,Canada,Europe no-no iyang age discimination di ba. Sa Pinas nga lang, anything goes if you can get away with it.

So kung may planong ganyan, magprotesta and magingay tayo.

Jan-10-09  BETASIGMA: hmmm Pinoy value base when it comes to discrimination is really appalling. We need to adapt EU and US system with regards to this if we want to take a step forward.Kung totoo man yung sinabi ni Pichay I think he deserves to be lambasted.Pati ba naman chess sa Olympiad may age requirement ano yan club looking for GRO entertainers.???that's BS. Say that to Korchnoi and he'll freak out.....

Jan-10-09  spawn2: Guys,

Pichay is issuing a challenge to Eugene and co. Am not so sure if this is a psychological ploy of Pichay daring Torre, Antonio Villamayor to prove him wrong. Its a win-win for him, if Eugene and co failed to rise to the challenge, Pichay will look like a genius because of his prediction. If Eugene, Antonio, Bong Villamayor and Mariano makes it plus Wesley Mark and/or JP Gomez, he will create the best Philippine Team in the annals of Philippine Chess.

Jan-10-09  Karpov2985: This is the quote from Bobby Ang "
Remember Mr. Pichay's promise that in the 2010 Khanty-Mansysk Olympiad the Philippines would field a team of five GMs, none of whom will be more than 30 years of age, and that they will finish high up in the standings?"

Spawn2, I don't think this is the way to challenge Eugene. I just hope he was not serious when Pichay said that.

Jan-11-09  spawn2: karpov,

just trying to give Pichay the benefit of a doubt. will see how things will developed. Before, when Torre and Antonio did not participate in the Olympiad selection, I was worried that they will be brush aside by the Federation. But lo and behold Antonio's campaign based on some news articles I've read were supported and funded by Pichay and the NCFP. I could be wrong but abangan na lang natin ang susunod na kabanata...

Jan-11-09  pinoymaster77: Lets see the progress of Umali Cup as indicator of our GMs and GM-candidates strengths.

And napakaganda ng prize pot so all would come out with their A game.

Jan-11-09  spawn2: guys,

wordfunph, you spoke (or posted) too soon.

Hope you enjoyed the ebooks i gave you, sana lumakas pa mga tira natin..
Jan-12-09  pinoymaster77: Notables in Marlon B's billiardphilippines site is newest IM V. Vuelban from an Italian tourney and
Sales not making it to top 3 in Aussie tilt. Mr. Vuelban is fortunate, it sounds like he's based in Italy and has access to European exposure.

VIRGILIO VUELBAN IS NEW INTERNATIONAL MASTER
Sunday, January 11, 2009, 20:05 Other Sports News Add a comment LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA—FIDE MASTER (FM) Virgilio Vuleban finished a tie for fourth along with three others in the just concluded Italian Open Chess Championships in Italy and become the Philippines’ newest International Master (IM).

The former Philippine Navy top player Vuelban, who is a nephew of Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno finished 5.5 points in nine outings, the same output of GM Spyridon Skembris and FMs Alessio de Sanctis and Flavio Guido.

De Santis and Guido, both also gained IM norm according to the official website yesterday which topped by GM Viorel Iordachescu who tote 6.5 points. GM Milan Drasko and IM Fabio Bruno shared 2nd to 3rd placers with 6.0 points each. It was fourth IM norm of Vuelban in this event, enjoyed the full support of Philippe J. Lhuillier, Philippine Ambassador to Italy,

In the (FIDE) World Chess Federation January 2009 list, Vuelban, also the president of the Filipino Chess Club in Rome (Italy) jumped his 2390 rating to 2411, enough for full-pledge IM title. According to Fide Handbook rules, aside from getting at least three IM norm, an IM aspirant needed to broke 2400 Elo barrier to complete his IM title requirement. However, Vuelban needed to wait the Fide General Assembly to confirm his coveted IM title. National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., was elated Vuelban’s latest feat.

” Binabati natin si (Virgilio)Vuelban, kasi pinatunayan niya sa buong mundo na kaya nating mga Filipino na makipagsabayan at mapakita ang talino natin at husay sa larangan ng chess,” said Pichay, who produced four (4) grandmaster (GM) under his term in the likes of Wesley So, Darwin Laylo, Jayson Gonzales and John Paul Gomez.

BY: NATIONAL MASTER MARLON BERNARDINO

Jan-12-09  pinoymaster77: I checked his FIDE ratings and year
born is 1972 so he's about 36 now.

Since he's a Moreno relative, he's a good foil to Mr. Ang's 'chismis' on the below 30 age reqt for next Olympiad

Jan-12-09  spawn2: wordfunph,

checked the content of the discs, nalula ako. Don't know where to start : )

Mukhang desidido talaga si Pichay na below 30 and all gm line up ng Pinas sa next Olympiad, inulit na naman ni Bobby Ang sa column nya today eh. Am beginning to get pissed but, its Pichay's opinion. A year and a half is a long wait, di natin alam kung ano mangyayari, pwede umalis si Pichay sa Chess or lumakas ng husto yunbg mga veterans. Hintayin na lang natin kung ano mangyayari. The ball is in the court of the veterans. Will they just sit down and accept this or will they fight back through their talents and show Pichay that he is not Nostradamus.

Good job!
Jan-12-09  spawn2: tim,

Pag sinisearch ko business world latest issue, i normally type bworldonline and date ex: bworldonline january 12, 2009 ang problem is me window ka lang of around up to 11 pm ng gabi to view the full article after that kapiraso na lang ng article makikita mo. you need to sign up with them, me fee yata para ma-access mo. its a good thing na first part ng article naka splash yung "prediction" ni Pichay. Try mo.

Jan-12-09  pinoymaster77: Parang nagumpisa na ata around this time yun Umali Cup, may nakahagip na ba ng sports news on this?
