EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jan-12-09  Karpov2985: spawn2, nakaindicate ba na "prediction"? If that is the case, then it's a statement that will challenge the veterans but if the "prediction" or "forecast" was not mentioned, then that will draw to a lot of interpretations.
Jan-12-09  spawn2: hi Karpov,

just got the hard copy of Mr. Ang's latest article, "prediction" was not the word used, (my bad) it was "vowed". He he he

mukhang mas malala yata yun. : )

Jan-12-09  wordfunph: Patalastas Muna (to borrow a word from Karpov2985 hehe): During a 1987 Candidates Match, Estonian top GM Jaan Ehlvest wore a white shirt and black tie when he played white, and a black shirt and white tie when he had black.
Jan-12-09  spawn2: Guys,

page 30 na tayo! would like to commend everyone for maintaining this page "away" free. We may have "debated" on various topics pero hanggang debate lang yun. I guess, bickerings and too much arguments are almost non existent in this page because all of us have a very high regard in GM Torre.

Pinoy, bought People's Tonight this morning. Wala pa tungkol sa Umali Cup. It may have not started yet. Normally, mabilis magcover si Mr. Ed Andaya ng mga Chess tourney local or international man.

Jan-12-09  spawn2: Pinoy,

Umali Cup will start on Jan 21 til Jan 27 in Nueva Ecija.

This is good start. If chess will be introduced in that early age, there is a big chance for kids to learn more about it. And with the aid of computers, they don’t need to find a human opponent in order get better with it. If this will be implemented throughout the country then pretty soon we will have more Wesley Sos in the near future.

He also mentioned that he will be joining the Gov. Umali Cup in Nueva Ecija next week. I do hope there will be live games shown which will give us more reason to visit Eugene’s site.

Jan-12-09  spawn2: Hi Karpov,

that is a great news! Dun sa belief ng DepEd na masyado pa bata for Grade 1 mukhang me inaccuracy lang ng konti dun. I learned playing the game at 6 years old. Normally Grade 1 pupils eh 7 years old na so medyo develop na intellect ng mga bata to absorb the basics of the royal game. Pero siguro trial muna at Grade 3 to check kung me positive/adverse effect sa mga bata then sa Grade 2 naman and later on Grade 1.

Jan-12-09  pinoymaster77: spawn2, thanks for reminding on tourney dates of Umali Cup. May nagtanong din si Wesley site and my rough recollection was its going to start this Jan, and would overlap with Wesley's Corus stint, as earlier posted.

Yun pala about the time patapos pa lang ang Corus he he... hina na talaga memorya...

Jan-13-09  Karpov2985: I think it's a good idea to start it at the third grade level. You're right some grade 1 pupils might be able learn chess but not all. There are those who are slow learners.

The event, sponsored by Mayor Florencio Bernabe and Magnolia Health Tea Drinks, is open to all non-titled players with NCFP 1950 below Standard Rating.

Jan-13-09  spawn2: karpov,

I guess whether they roll this out to Grade 3 or Grade 1 pupils, we should consider this a step in the right direction to propagate chess in the Philippines and come up with players who will follow the footsteps of Eugene, Wesley and the rest...

Jan-13-09  Karpov2985: I agree! Jesli Lapuz is really supporting chess using his position as Secretary of Education. Couple that with Eugene's participation, then it becomes a win-win situation.
Jan-13-09  art00: I agree that this is a very positive development for Philippine Chess. My only concern is whether or not the DepEd already has a time table for implementing this worthwhile plan.

I assume that Sec Lapus' tenure as DepEd head will be co-terminous with President Arroyo's. If this plan is not yet implemented by 2010, the new administration (and, presumably, new DepEd Secretary) might have other (different) ideas about the plan.

I submit that if the DepEd is really serious about this, they should start it as soon as possible (after the appropriate feasibility and other studies, of course).

Jan-13-09  timhortons: Either you die a hero....or u live long enough to see yourself turn into a Villan...

Jan-13-09  zanshin: <Torre behind chess in school curriculum

Chess to be included in school curriculum
01/13/2009 10:15 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Marikina will be the first city to add the sport of chess into its academic curriculum with the help of Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre.

To do this, Torre will demonstrate how the sport is played on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in a Marikina school yet to be announced by the organizers.

Jundio Salvador, a member of the organizing committee, said that although the Department of Education had already instructed all public schools to add chess in their curriculum, Marikina will be the pilot city for the experimental program.

GMs Torre and Jayson Gonzales, who prepared the syllabus, will be the project’s main proponents, with chess being included in the curriculum starting at Grade III in the elementary level up to fourth year high school at the start of the 2009-2010 school year in June.

Salvador said that Torre believes playing chess could hone the minds of the youth to become future entrepreneurs. “The Philippines have a potential in the international stage. Look at the top ranked teams in chess, they are all first world countries. We believe that we can train future entrepreneurs if the youth learn to play chess.">

always the parents is right, i believe that, i pass through that stage,i remember one of our professor at west visayas state university say in front of the class that in "argument between parent and children<shes referring to college student> its always the student that is right"< we all give her a big hand of applause, an applause that takes to long to finish>

at my age right now, if i am to advice somebody younger than me, ill tell them to follow there parents.

i did not lost path in life, i finish my studies, been to grad school, but all those years i tried to prove that my parents is wrong they end up always right.

i hope ill have the guts to tell my "nanay" be fore she die thats shes always right.

Jan-13-09  spawn2: Guys,

ika nga sa isang kanta ng Apo Hiking Soceity "tatanda at lilipas din ako, ngunit mayroon awiting iiwanan sa inyong alaala dahil minsan tayo'y nagkasama" Si GM Eugene hindi isang kanta o dalawang kanta ang iiwanan sa Pinoy kundi laksa laksang album when he decides to put his chess clock in the cabinet and his chess set under the bed.

No one can put Torre down, not Pichay nor his cohorts with their latest moves proclaiming that no player beyond 30 years old will be part of the 2010 Philippine Team to the Olympiad.

Hoping that Eugene will perform superbly to show that he is still the Lion on top of the mountain, the King of Philippine Chess, si Wesley naman Prince pa lang pero next in line na.

Jan-13-09  spawn2: Trivia Guys,

Secretary Jesli Lapus was the one who spearheaded the Centennial Match between Torre and Antonio in 1998 when he was still with Landbank (not so sure if he was the president during that time). He even invited Karpov to grace the occassion. So kitang kita na me dugong tagasulong ng ahedres yung mama.

Jan-13-09  Karpov2985: Spawn2, talagang bilib na ako sa trivia mo. Kaya naman pala masigasig si Jesli Lapus na isulong ang chess as part of the curriculum ay dahil mahilig din pala siya sa ahedres. Kaya dapat samantalahing ipatupad before 2010 baka yong papalit sa kanya walang malasakit sa chess.
Jan-13-09  pinoymaster77: That is great to know guys that GMs Torre and Gonzales were active with the syllabus!

Yun Thai tournament sa April pa, and hope some of our GMs and GM-candidates go there. Sounds like may mga astig na GMs din from Azerbaijan,Iran,Russia and so far 3 Indian GMs.

May 9 year old
nga na nakapisak ng GM, world record daw iyon...

Jan-13-09  pinoymaster77: Ooopps, there was a typo, I meant 3 Indian IMs.

If I may add yun Indian IM na RR Laxman before the
Spore/KL tourneys di ako familiar but based on his results GM strength na rin...
