EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Mar-22-09  spawn2: hi pinoy,

Mukhang nirereserve na lang ni GM Eugene time nya for long games. Iba rin kasi yung nahasa sa traditional time control na 2 hours for 40 moves. Di bale, bukas na start ng Battle of the GMs2 sa Dapitan, me pag-uusapan na naman tayo dito sa page. Top two favorites : GM Wesley So - the logical choice, GM Eugene Torre - the sentimental favorite

Mar-23-09  Lemon69: Good day ! Idol ko talaga si Wesley boy ,pero iba pa rin ang experience and wisdom ni GM Torre, actually , we'll have to watch out also on other contenders , lam mo naman ang mga pinoy pag alam na dehado, lalong bumabagsik.
Mar-23-09  pinoymaster77: Ok let the games begin. Pero teka saan ba access tournament skeds?

Bukas ba opening, o sana may 1st round game na?

Mar-23-09  pinoymaster77: From Malibay Chess club/rusticbull site :

Mar-23-09  spawn2: guys,

I read from chessphi.com that for the April 1 Fide Rating list, it is possible that GM Torre will have a 2561 rating. An improvement of 1 point compared to the December listing. It is to be expected since there was not much tournament available for GM Torre to take part. But with the Battle of the GM2 which will start today and the Asian Invitational and Subic Open in May plus the PGMA Cup and Pichay Cup in the latter part of the year, GM Torre will have the chance to breach the 2600 level. Go for it GM Eugene, it will be a nice icing on the cake of a long and successful career. At 57 years of age, people expects a chess player to retire or retrogress but if you can achieve the 2600 level, you will be a living proof that through focus and dedication a person can continuously improve if he wants to no matter what.

Since you only need 39 points, with 4 to 5 possible tournaments where you can participate, the goal is to get at least 8 additional points from each tournament. But if you will be able to duplicate your superb performance in the PGMA Cup (which we know you can) the goal will be easier to reach.

Will pray that 2009 will be the year that you breach 2600.

Mar-24-09  pinoymaster77: Any result on the Torre vs Nolte game today? Wes won over Bong per the kabgy in Wes' page.

Tomorrow is the D-DAY! 3rd round action in the afternoon is the 'showdown' between El Eugenio, where are you placing your chess bucks?

Mar-24-09  spawn2: hi pinoymaster,

walang balita eh. tinignan ko rin sa chess-result.com wala pa rin. yup, tomorrow Wesley will be in for a fight against Gomez in the morning and GM Eugene in the afternoon. Go Wes!! Go Eugene!! Torre will be handling the white pieces this time around.

Mar-24-09  pinoymaster77: Thanks spawn2 for the point standings after the 1st round. Will lookout for the games today!
Mar-24-09  metrolirot: Good day to all Torre fans out there. Ngayong hapon na and laro na pinakaabangan nating lahat. I was among those really dissapointed when the Torre-So match was cancelled that's why this aternoon's game is eagerly anticipated. Hope that the game would live-up to its billing and both will be playing for a win. My fearless forecast is a Torre win in a protracted end game struggle. With all apology to all the members of Barangay Wesley which includes me.He.he..
Mar-25-09  spawn2: metrolirot,

Mar-25-09  pinoymaster77: Yes, sana mag post din moves si Wes thru Icc I think, just like what he did on the JP game.
Mar-25-09  spawn2: Guys,

Mukhang the changing of the guards has finally started. Mali tayo pareho metrolirot. GM Wes won the game. Its time to accept the fact that it is now GM Wesley's time to be the top dog. No disgrace to GM Eugene. Even he, saw this coming that is why he was pushing for chess activities intended for the young.

Mar-25-09  pinoymaster77: From the CHESSPHI site, ff projected top 20 for April shows also the current 'FIRST FIVE' of Phil chess, still would make the core for the training pool for next Olympiad team, as I posed also in the Wesley site :

Mar-25-09  chessph: I have put up the Torre-So game in my blog: www.chessph.blogspot.com for anyone who might want to replay it in java. I'll try to come up with my analysis later...

Thanks and congratulations to GM Wesley So!

Mar-25-09  spawn2: thanks chessph
Mar-25-09  RuyLupit: Mga kasama, may nabasa ako na paglabas ng FIDE April list may isang bagong GM tayo (Sanchez) at dalawang bagong IM (Yap at Vuelban). Mabuhay!
Mar-26-09  spawn2: GM Eugene,

Di pa tapos ang laban. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Good luck!!

Mar-26-09  spawn2: GM Torre,

Congrats on your win against IM Dableo. Your back on track to increasing your elo points.

Mar-26-09  wordfunph: <spawn2> bro why an add'l 1 elo point for GM Eugene's Apr. 2009 list? Wala siyang tourney right? Thanks..
Mar-26-09  spawn2: Wordfunph,

Mar-26-09  pinoymaster77: Interesting to see next round Wesley vs Joey game.
