EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Mar-31-09  pinoymaster77: Draw Joey and Eugene, 2-3 finish for the veterans. Thats the living proof, may asim pa... they can still play in 1 or 2 Olympiads.

Pichay being a politician,kakambiyo iyan.

I wonder what Mr. Ang will write this time, as a twist?

Mar-31-09  spawn2: guys,

official standing (top 6 of BoGM2)

1. GM Wesley So 8
2. GM Rogelio Antonio 7
3. GM Eugene Torre 6.5
4. GM JP Gomez 5.5
5. IM Richard Bitoon 5.5
6. GM Darwin Laylo 5.5

If the Olympiad is happening next month, this team will be very strong. Can be a contender for a top 20 placing if they can get a team manager who can make the team gel.

Unfortunately, the Olympiad is 1.5 years away and a lot of things can happen. My reading is, both GM Torre and GM Antonio can hold their own against the existing crop of top phil chess players. Tagilid lang sila talaga ke GM Wes. If there will be no new faces who will rise ala Wesley, it is safe to say that GM Torre and GM Antonio will be part of the 2010 team

Mar-31-09  spawn2: guys,

GM Torre's current "live rating" is around 2662. Eighteen points away from his best rating of 2580 and 38 points away from 2600. You can do it GM Torre!!

Apr-01-09  pinoymaster77: spawn2, I missed a tidbit on Eugene's interview, Dennis P was mentioning Pinoy innovation (think its Eugene's concept) to have tournament points revision, like a stalemate will merit 1.5 pts to the player who made the stalemate.
Apr-01-09  spawn2: LimSJ,

Thanks for the info.

Anand's hand in Euro chess leagues
Posted On Wednesday, April 01, 2009

World champion Viswanathan Anand is a pioneer in Indian chess in many ways. Apart from his deeds on the board and his role in popularising chess in India, he has also played his part in getting other GMs to play in various European chess leagues.

In the 1990s, Anand played in the Yugoslav league for Agrouniverzal, where he and his recent World championship challenger Vladimir Kramnik were teammates. Agrouniverzal dominated the European Chess League during that period.

The Indian then moved to OSC Baden-Baden in the German Bundesliga where he has been for almost 10 years now.

Anand’s presence in the European league must have certainly influenced players such as Krishnan Sasikiran, Pentala Harikrishna, Koneru Humpy and Sandipan Chanda to try their luck there as well. Sasikiran and Humpy played in the French league while Chanda had played in the Bundesliga for a couple of seasons.

The Bundesliga and the French chess leagues offer good returns for Grandmasters. They get paid according to the number of games they play and also according to their ratings. Anand commands a good appearance package and generally the pay-per-game is in excess of 1,000 euros (around Rs 70,000).

Last weekend, Anand dashed off to Germany from Nice after finishing his Amber tournament to play for his club, Baden-Baden and helped them win their fourth Schachbundesliga title in a row with 88 points. Baden-Baden trounced Aljechin Solingen 6-2 last weekend. With a four-point margin the club virtually sealed its title and another 6-2 win on Sunday against SV Wattenscheid helped them widen the gap with rest of the field.

World Champion, Anand, played only two games of the season for Baden-Baden because he was busy with his World championship against Kramnik when the league started in October. He played on Saturday and Sunday last and won both of them.

The Baden-Baden team, apart from Anand, had Peter Heine Nielsen (Anand’s second), Peter Svidler, Michael Adams and Pentala Harikrishna in the ranks.

In the last two rounds of the Schachbundesliga, Baden-Baden needed only two points. Anand beat Dutchman Daniel Stellwagen with black in the ‘poisoned pawn’ variation of the Sicilian Najdorf. and then played white against Polish GM Barthalomew Macieja of Wattenscheid on Sunday. He won comfortably.

Apr-03-09  spawn2: guys,

This is a post of boy_lopez in Wesley page and am posting it here for your reading pleasure. "I think we absorb ourselves too much with Wesley So that we eventually forgot our other chess hero, GM Eugene Torre who deserves equal attention these days. At least, chessdom cited GM Torre. I know this post should be in Torre's page but since Wesley's page is more popular than that of Eugene, I might as well dropped it here: http://reports.chessdom.com/news-20...

Apr-03-09  boy lopez: This is the link to chessdom about Torre. http://reports.chessdom.com/news-20...
Apr-03-09  returnoftheking: Does anyone know if Torre had a coach in his youth? How did he become a world class GM when there was no chess culture (?) in his country?
Apr-03-09  pinoymaster77: boylopez, thanks for sharing! Lets comment on that chessheroes blog then!

All the best to GM Eugene in the Asian event in Subic this May!

Show 'em definitely may asim pa!!

Apr-03-09  pinoymaster77: returnoftheking,
I could only surmise, maybe Master Glenn can give more details as they were contemporaries.

What I know is mostly self study and going over chess books. Note there were no softwares or no other GM in Phils or Asia at that time.

There was even an article that Eugene could not go overseas for a critical stint for his GM norm, and his brother Jess sold off his tricycles to fund the trip.

Probably when he was strutting the intl scene, he made friends with intl GMs who could share, and he also developed deep friendship with Bobby Fischer

Apr-03-09  returnoftheking: Thanks for the info Pino. It makes me wonder if he could have been even stronger. Not that 2 wins against Karpov and being a top GM is not enough.
Apr-03-09  spawn2: returnoftheking,

i read from an article that GM Eugene was saying that his rise to the top would have been much faster if he had a coach during his youth. This coach could have told/guided him to shy away from certain openings which did not contributed much to his growth.

by the way your location please?

Apr-03-09  kazza83: <spawn2> I'm working here in Iloilo City po sir in a private school here but taga-Palawan ako. GM Eugene visited our school last 2005 during our 13th Foundation Day.
Apr-03-09  spawn2: kazza83,

thank you very much!

Apr-03-09  kurtrichards: The Asian individual championship in Subic this May is still a month to go but this early I think GM Torre is preparing mentally, physically, spiritually, and psychologically to win it or at least to be in respectable place among Asia's bests. I can only say good luck to the once ranked as high as #17 in the world in the early 80s.
Apr-04-09  spawn2: kurtrichards,

am also praying that GM Eugene barges on the top ten so that he will be able to finally participate in the World Cup. He just needs time to prepare himself. I remember reading pinoymaster's post that GM Eugene will ask his partner in business to allow him to take a leave of absence to prepare for the Subic tournament.

btw, can I get your base of operation please. thanks

Apr-04-09  wordfunph: Hoping that El Eugenio will recollect his deadly form just like what he did last year. I won't be surprised if he ends up on top of the heap over other young GMs. To GM Torre, as number 3 finisher in BGM2, i wish you'll represent RP in 2010 Khanti Chess Olympiad. We'll always pray for your success..
Apr-04-09  wordfunph: Piece of Trivia:

El Eugenio with +86 =111 -39 record (60% clip) in 19 Chess Olympiads. I hope he will play in 2010 Khanti Mansiysk Chess Olympiad for his 20th term.

http://www.olimpbase.org/players/k8...

Mabuhay si GM Eugene Torre!

Apr-04-09  kurtrichards: I remember when in 1982 Toluca Interzonal GM Torre was tied for first with GM Lajos Portisch (today, April 4 is Portisch's birthday) thus he became qualified to be a candidate for the world championship. GM Torre, however, lost to GM Ribli in the quarterfinals. GM Torre maybe old compared to the young turks of chess today (including GM So who at 15 is making big waves both in local and iternational chess events)but he can still "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee". Watchout for GM Eugene Torre. Vamos!
Apr-04-09  returnoftheking: spawn; interesting. Has So a coach now by the way? And to answer your question I am not from the Philippines but from Europe but that's not a reason to be blind for great GM's of other parts of the world.
Apr-05-09  spawn2: hi returnoftheking,

GM Wesley does not ahve any coach right now. What he has are the latest chess programs which he can use to improve his game. Also, he just recently started to play in ICC where he can play with strong GMs for practice.

I thank you for recognizing the skills and talent of our very own GM Torre, Asia's 1st Grandmaster.

Apr-07-09  spawn2: guys,

there is an interesting data available in chessphi showing who the top players were from 1971 January - 2009 April (76 rating periods)

gm torre's record are as follows

1st - 42 out of 76
2nd - 18 out of the 76
3rd - 14 out of the 76
4th - 2 of of the 76

In the span of 38 years, GM Eugene has been part of top five players in the country. I think this can be considered a record ( I dont know of any player who can boast such a record (at least those who are still active). And with the way things are going, he can maintain this in the next two years.

I hope this information can be seen by the people who say that Eugene is over the hill/past his prime so that they can be enlightened.
