EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Apr-15-09  spawn2: epistle,

sa wakas nadalaw ka din dito : )

By the way, GM Torre's current rating of 2561 is slightly higher than the present rating of another chess legend, GM Victor "The Terrible" Korchnoi at 2552.

Apr-15-09  spawn2: guys,

checked current fide rating of those who participated in the 1976 Marlboro's Battle of Champions held here in the Philippine which was won by GM Eugene.

Name Rating Year of Birth

A. Karpov 2644 1951
E. Torre 2561 1951
L. Ljubojevic 2553 1950
W. Browne 2435 1949

It just shows GM Torre's staying power. Dont you think?

I expect GM Eugene to breach 2570 after the Subic Individual event.

Apr-15-09  TugasKamagong: <DiskFunkTional> Andronico Yap's body was found washed up on a beach in 1990. I don't remember where exactly; it may have been a beach in Batangas, or was it in Bauang? He had drowned, and it was termed an accident, although the rumor that he had committed suicide persists to this day.

IM Yap has a page in this website. His wins against Pinter, Adorjan, Shamkovich, and Bagirov are quite impressive, as is his draw with Tal.

Apr-15-09  wordfunph: <TugasKamagong> Salamat sa story, now i know more about IM Yap..
Apr-15-09  pinoymaster77: spawn2, hmmm that Marlboro chess event brings back memories.

Many major chess events were made in Baguio and PICC then. Maybe major factors is then Pres McCoy liked chess, and Campo was influential.

Who would forget those K-K matches and even the Olympiad being done here.

And I recall a major chess event done at Ninoy Stadium, that was probably in the 90's when the youth brigade was composed of Kamsky,Gelfand,Anand, Lautier,Short,Shirov etc...

Apr-15-09  spawn2: pinoymaster,

yup, the interzonals in 1990 and the Manila Olympiad in 92. What I regret most was that during those times, my interest in chess was at its lowest point which means I was not able to visit the venue of those tournaments. Sayang, nakapag-ipon sana ako ng autographs from the Grandmasters present. Kaya ngayon, I make it a point na to be present. Di ko pakakawalan Subic Individuals, PGMA Cup and Pichay Cup : )

Apr-15-09  spawn2: pinoymaster,

marami pa rin tayong local talents na di pa GM pero malalakas. Si Alcon John Datu na upset si GM Gomez in the in the previous round. Ngayon naman si GM Mark, nadale ni Andador

Apr-16-09  pinoymaster77: spawn2, Ah oo marami kahit sa Bgy level madami 'Bgy masters'. Literally some of them have chess for a living. Tiyaga kahit 5 pesos per game bigyan ka pa partida, 3 mins siya and opponent has 5 mins.

An example in chess team events is Allan Macala, usually sa lower boards yan pero pointsmaker. Usually kasama siya sa teams nila Salcedo. I think Ive been seeing him around since the Cubao 'active chess' events some 20+ yrs back pa...

Those with a stash of many chess sets and clocks are having a field day ha, guys like Joel Hicap and Alex Dinoy (Shell Active), they can supply more than 100 sets+ for a tournament.

Apr-16-09  pinoymaster77: spawn2, eto pa kwento nasagap sa Pinoy masters, specifically sa daddy ni Haridas Pascua during the last GMA Cup, may Burmese masters daw na sumali in previous GMA/Pichay Cups and ang target ay to earn more ELO points or earn norms, eh di nila alam madami chess 'hustlers' sa Pinas, pagtapos daw ng tournaments halos naubos daw ELO pts nila previously earned... kaya di na bumalik!

Ang gustong gusto naman magpa-train and magpahasa dito mga Viets and Chinese, yun sa Chinese 3rd o 4th teams nila o yung youth prospects.

Apr-16-09  spawn2: pinoymaster,

Si NT Truong Son ang highest rated nila right now at 2588

Am confident that with the rise of our young GMs (So, Gomez, Paragua) and the resurgence of the old guards (Torre and Antonio) we have regain our supremacy in Asia meaning we are #3 behind China and India.

Ilalaban ko ng batbatan yung first five natin. Magandang training and support ang ibigay definitely top 20 sa Olympiad yung team.

Apr-16-09  spawn2: Pinoymaster,

kung bukas ang Olympiad, this will be my board order

1. GM Wesley So
2. GM Eugene Torre
3. GM Rogelio Antonio
4. GM John Paul Gomez
5. GM Mark Paragua

# 6 could be GM Laylo or GM Mariano kung mareregain nya yung dating form nya.

Actually, our second team is also strong,

IM Bitoon
GM Villamyor
IM Barcenilla
GM Laylo
GM Gonzales

plus Dimakiling and Datu

Apr-16-09  spawn2: guys,

please check Mr Bobby Ang's column today in the Business World titled "Battle of the GM 2". It talks about GM Torre's game vs GM JP Gomez.

Below is a portion of the article:

"Until Wesley So came into the scene, GM Eugene Torre had always won local tournaments in the country so long as its format was round-robin. In Swiss system tournaments he was not as successful, but in all-play-all Eugene was invincible.

One of the reasons behind this dominance was his stamina — he just got stronger as the tournament got longer. This is the same story as in his tennis. I heard one of Eugene’s frustrated opponents ventilate in the locker room once that the GM’s tennis style is a bit unorthodox and he did not have any flashy moves, but no matter how hard you hit the ball or how much "pektos" you apply, Eugene is going to return the ball to you until you err out of exhaustion.

That is why I was so worried during the 2008 PGMA Cup — Torre won the first five games but was visibly tired in the final three rounds and in fact could very well have lost all three. Was he finally losing his stamina?

Well, we got our answer in this Battle of GMs — Eugene lost to Wesley in the 3rd, recovered by beating Ronald Dableo in the 4th, and got temporarily bogged down with draws. However, he came back with a 2.5/3 finish and ended up in solo 3rd place.

I hope he can continue to contend in these powerful local tournaments — there is still so much our younger players could learn from him."

Apr-17-09  cdgam: Good afternoon guys!

More power to GM Eugene Torre! Sana itong darating na Asian Tournament sa Subic, maipakita ulit ni GM Torre ang lakas nya.

First time kong nakita in personal si GM Torre noong laban nila ni GM Balinas sa Magellan Hotel, Cebu City.

I believe GM Torre can raise back his rating to 2600 Elo mark. Go Eugene go!

Apr-17-09  CRISMELDRE: Kayang-kaya ni GM Torre to reach 2600 ELO Rating..
Apr-17-09  spawn2: hi cdgam and crismeldre,

mukhang puspusan ang ensayo ni GM Eugene. Humingi yata sya sa partner nya ng vacation from work to conctrate on his preparation for the Subic Individuals, kapareho nyo, tiwala ako na this year, we will see GM Torre breach 2600. Ang nakakatuwa dito pag nangyari ito, one for the books and record na ito. Kasi pag mga 55 to 60 years old ka na, ang tendency ng rating mo eh pababa. Yung ke Eugene pataas for the past 10 months. : )

Apr-17-09  CRISMELDRE: <spawn2><pinoymaster>..Pag yan ang line ng Philippine Team for the next Olympiad...Im sure a good results..

Apr-17-09  CRISMELDRE: Home > Sports > Top Stories Unbeaten PNP captures intercities chess crown 04/16/2009 | 06:25 PM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | ShareThisMANILA, Philippines - Philippine National Police-National Headquarters-Quezon City proved to be a tough nut to crack, finishing as the only unbeaten team after nine rounds to capture the 2009 National Inter-Cities chess team championship.

PNP-QC halved the point with Local Water Utilities Administration-QC-B, 2-2, in its last assignment to win the championship on Thursday at the Metro Town Hall in Tarlac.

Ali Branzuela defeated Richelieu Salcedo while Rolando Andador and Horizon Villanueva drew with Alcon John Datu and Mari Joseph Turqueza, respectively, as PNP-NHQ-QC finished with five wins and four draws and accumulate a total of 14 match points.

PNP-NHQ-QC was actually going for a win in their last match to avoid ending the tournament tied with Mandaluyong but Edsel Montoya bowed to Jan Nigel Galan.

In spite of finishing tied with Mandaluyong at the end of nine rounds, PNP-NHQ-QC won the title based on higher tiebreak score. PNP-NHQ-QC and Mandaluyong had to settle for P80,000 each after the top and second place cash prizes were combined and split into two.

Mandaluyong caught up with PNP-NHQ-QC at the top after defeating LWUA-QC-F, 2.5-1.5.

Top seed Tagaytay City finished in a three-way tie for second after crushing co-leader Quezon City, 2.5-1.5, to tally 13 points.

Tagaytay City eventually tied with their victims and LWUA-QC-B at joint second. Each team won P30,000. -GMANews.TV

Apr-17-09  pinoymaster77: spawn2,
Thats a good lineup indeed! I hope Pichay drops his 'all young blood' idea.

Well, at least Bobby Ang seems friendlier to El Eugenio these days.

Maganda ngang example si Eugene if he breaks 2600 at his age. Disiplinado rin kasi ang mama, he has always emphasized physical conditioning is an integral part of prepns even when he was younger.

We will see in the Asian event at Subic on how has been the progress of our woodpushers. Many of them have had sustained intl exposure din the past years. Pati youngsters natin.

Apr-17-09  pinoymaster77: CRISMELDRE/cdgan,
