EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Sep-27-08  Karpov2985: Pinoymaster77 / spawn2, dito pala kayo tumatambay.
I need you HELP! Mukhang nag iisa lang ako lumalaban for GM Torre..
Let's just keep on arguing our point until somebody listen. Kung wala pa ring mangyari, e di O.K., we did our best.
Sep-27-08  Karpov2985: I like the latest post by 321ycnay sa Wesley site.
Sep-27-08  spawn2: Yup,

Pumupunta lang ako dun to see if there are arguments against torre then I reply. Its my way of respecting Wesley So since page nya yun. You know guys, sa tingin ko, konti lang ang anti eugene. Ito yung mga bata, mga baguhan (not necessarily) who are not aware of the sacrifices of Eugene for the last 40 years. Am sure, pag nag survey tayo sa general chess public, a lot will favor the inclusion of Eugene but someone who will give up his position will be financially rewarded. Tayong mga pinoy, mahilig sa underdog. Definitely, kung isa sa mga team members eh aalisin ng basta basta, a lot of criticism will be hurled against NCFP.

Since politico siya, he has tendency to go with whats popular.

Though he pledged for the Pichay Cup, lifetime ang support niya (means even after GMA's time).

Can we actually kibitz in pinoy here? If so, (no pun) then that is quite a welcome treat!

Sep-27-08  pinoymaster77: Hello 321ycnay, ok yan inabot ko Maria Cafra,Florante at pati Banyuhay and Juan dela Cruz! Napapaghalata ang age group, hane?

Fellow kibitzers, let me pose this question - who among Carlsen,Karjakin and Radjabov will be near future world champ? Wesley would follow this group in 3 to 4 years' time, or longer kung magfulltime sa college.

Reason I raise this in Eugene's page is this is his unfinished business. Ive also checked the blogs/biography of these chess prodigies. The common hilites I saw were they learned to play chess at childhood, they won a world youth age group (Under-10,Under-12,Under-14) or Jr championships. Specially for the European Super GMs they enjoyed the backup support of having GMs as coach, or second.

Carlsen has Agdestein, even the Super GMs have seconds (malamang they pay, or share the prize money), Topalov has Cheparinov, Aronian has Sagissian etc...

Sa Russia, during their height they had the chess schools with the major ones named after their world champs - Botvinnik, I think Tal has one. I think in RP, there should be a Torre school, sana may sponsor.

Sana ma-setup eto ng NCFP. Other countries are already taking note of the resurgence of Pinoy masters, both youth and veterans - but if we tap all the talent on a pooled/sharing basis, we will progress further!

Sep-27-08  timhortons: pichay is not crazy to name the school of chess in the philippines after torre, it would be pichay school of chess with his big picture painted infront of it.
Sep-27-08  321ycnay: Hello pinoymaster77,

As for the prodigies question, I would second the overwhelming consensus among the top tier SuperSGMs like Aronian, and company, which I've read from an Aronian interview at Bilbao, in Spain during their superSGM games.

It is Magnus Carlsen, no doubt, if there is one coming off their batch.

Radjabov's almost been there, but nowadays seem to have lost a little bit of that grim determination needed, say the spikes to hike, to win it all. His plight is similar to that with Leko's hitting a granite wall-like halt from a steady upsurge. Karjakin doesn't seem to have consistent numbers against the biggies, while Magnus' game flourishes and just grows leaps and bounds.

GM Magnus is hard to beat over-the-board, one needs home prep and Kramnik style dullness then endgame virtuosity, to slowdown and neutralize him. If at all achieved, then again, you still have to drive Magnus to boredom to quell his over-the-board mastery. Tough!

Sep-28-08  spawn2: Hi Guys,

My bet is Magnus Carlsen. The way he has been scoring in the SuperGM circuit is just amazing.

With regard to a school for chess in the Philippines. If i remember correctly, GETCI (Grandmaster Eugene Torre Chess Institute)was launched sometime 2002-2003. This was in cooperation with Chess Asia/Belgosa System administration. Am not so sure whether it is still active or not.

Sep-28-08  pinoymaster77: Hi Timhortons, its ok whatever name as long as its effective churning out good chess students. BTW, if I may ask are you Filipino or ?, I see your blogs in the other SuperGM sites.

Hi Spawn2, yes I also read Torre did some basic chess lessons at the First Asia Institute in Batangas. Saka sana yun GETCI would produce real chess masters.

321ycnay and spawn2, noted your bet is Magnus. Yes, I also read about the Bilbao report and the SuperGMs are grumbling 'why can't I beat this kid?'

For a day or 2, he was #1 in the live ratings, and the last rounds of the Bilbao masters defined who got #1 and thats Topalov.

On a side note, 'mataray' pala si Topa pinasaringan si Anand, parang comment was 'why should I mind a #5 rated player?'

Sep-28-08  spawn2: Hi Guys,

Going back to Eugene, I have two wishes for him:

1. He should ride on his latest success and continue to play in rated tournament so that he can breach 2600. Just imagine the impact of this, a 56 year old considered as "laos" by other people able to improve his rating and prove that old dogs can still learn new tricks.

2. Someone will finally finance the printing of his book which was a collaboration with Bobby "ChessPiece" Ang. Bobby mentioned to me that there is a chapter in the book entitled "The Making of a GM" written by Mr. Florencio Campones which is an excellent read.

I tried looking for a book written about Eugene during the seventies entitled " Beyond the 13th move" but no success.

Good evening to everyone: )

Sep-28-08  spawn2: Hi Tim,

I read a book entitled King's Gambit which featured one of Canada's players Pascal Charbonneau who is now married to Irina Krush of the U.S. Am just not so sure if he represented Canada in the Chess Olympiad

Sep-28-08  zanshin: <poinoymaster77> Yup, 100% pinoy si <tim>. Tingnan mo yung personal blog niya.

<spawn2> Speaking of Torre books, lumabas na ba yung autobiography niya? .. parang "40 years of Philippine chess"? Dapat last year pa, pero walang na akong nabilitaan.

Sep-28-08  pinoymaster77: Fellow Kibitzers,

I just browsed the Olympiad link in chessdom for the partial (I didnt see Aze,Kazakh,Bulgaria and France for example) list of teams.

I could say for Armenia,Georgia,China and US theyre sending their top GMs.

I should say the US has a very SOLID linetup this round. Well, with their 'new' recruits (Akobian and I think Onischuk?), theyre solid with Kamsy on #2 and Nakamura on #3,if that is how the player chronology is presented....

I think if I remembered right on their previous lineups, it was an immigrant GM Smirin manning the top board, but the US still fared well then.

China is fielding their 'FIRST 5', think its same TOP 5 who played in 'China vs Russia' series.

Since there are only 5 players, take the case of Armenia, when I used to browse their top players, these are the names I see. But I think this round, Smbat Lputian is left out, maybe because Aronian has ascended from the youth ranks.

Sep-28-08  pinoymaster77: Hello Timhortons,

Ah ok kabayan, actually I just got back into the chess circles when I started to read up on Wesley's consecutive tournaments exploits, and then found the chessgames site and found it easy to register.

Thanks also zanshin for confirming that he's Pinoy.

Foreign sounding kasi timhortons, and di pa nakapunta Canada.

Imagine the youngest to win a category 20 tournament. Now i think with his live rating, he is in the top 3. Can you imagine when he turn 20? He has the potential of beating Kasparov's record of highest ELO rating ever.
Sep-28-08  Karpov2985: timhortons, wala naman kasing masama kung appointed as long as ang mga napili ay karapatdapat. At sabi mo nga based on past performance. This process will filter those players who are inconsistent. If the selection process is only qualifying tourney, there is a possibility that an inconsistent player will be included in the team. There are lots of suggestions when this was discussed at Wesley's site to make the selection process better. The best way is to have merits in every tournaments they play towards a qualifying tournament. This way there is a possibility that a player doesn't need to play in the qualifying tournament as long as he has all the necessary points to be included in the team. This is just my opinion please feel free to disagree.
Sep-28-08  Karpov2985: Totoy bato! Is that supposed to be complement? Most probably because it means hindi mabuwagbuwag.
