EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Sep-09-12  wordfunph: amen padre <spawn>..

salamat at kongrats sa PHI team, pinaligaya nyo po kami..

my salute to GM Torre at sa buong koponan ng ating Inang Bayan!

goodnight.

8:10pm

Sep-09-12  allan.dinglasan: Now lang ako bukas laptop. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!!!
Sep-09-12  bubuli55: Congratz! Enjoyed the games. Made us proud. Safe travels.
Sep-09-12  spawn2: Good night guys!

Bilang uli ng araw hanggang 2014 Tromso Norway. Balik kayod sa trabaho.

Tama ka bro <bubuli5> we really enjoyed the the games!

Sep-09-12  geniokov: Congratz Team Philippines! We are proud of you!
Sep-09-12  321ycnay: Congrats to team Pilipinas! Under the circumstances, we have overachieved and were well rewarded. Time to count our blessing... well documented here na!

I am hoping for the next olympiade to make room for a GM Sadorra, every time I get the feeling that our team's overall play has turned stale his name comes to mind. Anybody who has followed his games and his wins in the very recent BOGM should know that this new GM of RP can be a big contributor for a future Olympiade team... he can be the "Ding Liren" for team Pilipinas in the future.

Just my opinion.

Likewise, if we consider upgrading our ability to manage each player's freshness through time management, we will have addressed a major concern for our team's weaknesses and needs.

Congrats to all the players, the management, and the whole of the NCFP.

Great result this time... flexibility is the key!

Let us not be content on this one... we now have realized that our team can really be competitive out there... a world beater!

There is no need, therefore; to use the Olympiade to neither earn GM norms nor use it as the theatre to prove one’s agenda is better than others.

Go Pinas!

Sep-09-12  pinoymaster77: Good pm,

Yup, a lot to be thankful for.

It was not meant to be, I mean for a top 10 finish to come that easily. We have to labour for it harder in the next Olympiads.

Many surprises and lessons learned Im sure which can be applied to the next Olympiads moving forward.

Ok yung mix na 3 qualifiers plus 2 seeded to balance it out on having a competitive team and give an open shot for aspiring players. Only that the finals like the BOGM be done 2 to 3 months earlier, so that there is more time for team bonding, exercises/camp for conditioning/stamina, and even a rigid training program for 'Olympiad neophyte'.

As I've sms to spawn2, even Pansol2 is in order considering what AFGM went through and performed thru it all. Request ko lang eh magkaroon ng informal portion na 'question and answer'.

Now, some of it can be told, during the thanksgiving dinner for AFGM at Gateway Mall where spawn2,Regge & Dari were in attendance, for a better finish team Philippines needed to score a major upset. Over quote nga, since the team upset Moldova,Bulgaria and England! Aside from shutting out the Kazakhs and winning over Iceland, and scoring a draw vs top rated Hungary could also be considered an upset.

The team gave us many exciting times and lit up our enthusiasm further for this game of chess!

Let's BUILD on this!

Sep-09-12  pinoymaster77: Per Olympiad site, Armenia emerged as champion, beating out Russia in the tiebreaks... this is now their 3rd time to become Olympiad champs!

Sep-09-12  spawn2: 21st place ang Pinas tulad ng 21st appearance ni GM Eugene: )

We were seeded 35th and we were 50th last Olympiad in Khanty.

Well done Team Philippines!

Sep-09-12  spawn2: On the next few days..we will dissect our performance vs the others in terms of strength of opposition.

Sep-09-12  Megadeth: We could have matched the 7th place ranking (1988 Greece) if we have beaten Romania (due to superior tie break with Vietnam). Pero iba naging ending, muntik na. What if lang..

Still Congrats PHIL Team!

Sep-09-12  321ycnay: We did pretty well, didn’t we? AFGM, GM Wesley, GM Barbosa, GM Mark and IM Dimakiling did us proud.

Owning an Olympiade record of 21 consecutive appearances, courtesy of the Rock, GM Eugene, is something we Pinoys shall cherish for a while.

Only thing that left a mild dissatisfaction was how our team limped off to the tape too fatigued to hold on to our early gain.

Philippine chess us in good hands though, so no worries that this will not be properly addressed.

Sep-09-12  Megadeth: <321ycnay> Yes we did great indeed. a lot of things to be grateful of. I can see a great and bright future for Phil. Chess.

< 321ycnay >
eksakli. Salamat!

Sep-09-12  pinoymaster77: Yup, the consolation is inspite of the short (or actually kanya-kanyang prepa) preparation time, no team activities
and not up-todate hardware/software for majority of our young GMs eh nakapalag ang team and nakasabay for awhile and ambushed some chess giants in the process!

More on this later, on how we can possibly build on this and IMPROVE to the next level...

Sep-09-12  torreAC: torre is the best chess player ever produced...
Sep-09-12  geniokov: So NCFP,What´s next stop? Is there any big tournament so that our Chessplayers have a continues program?
Sep-09-12  batongol: Walang dapat ikahiya dahil maganda ang naging resulta ang laro na mga Pinoys!!!...

Susan Polgar: Not sure why my last post did not publish. The RP team won bronze in category B. Torre was the only player on stage to receive the cup. Perhaps the bus did not arrive for others. But it was good seeing him on stage representing the Philippines. The crowd roared for him :) Will publish pictures soon at www.ChessDailyNews.com

< GM Susan Polgar >

Thank you so much for that news about GM Eugene Torre. It's good that the other chess players acknowledge and appreciate his achievements and contributions to the game. There is no greater recognition when coming from his own peers. We are very proud and happy for him. Thanks again :)

Sep-09-12  pinoymaster77: Good am,

Now, that BRONZE in Group B is another one to be THANKFUL for, thanks be to God!

Congratulations to our teams and NCFP for giving it their best

Kelan ang Pansol2 or next dinner?

Sep-09-12  pinoymaster77: Next tournament ay KL Open which starts next week I think Sept 17, about 17 to 18 Pinoys registered headed by GM Barbosa (2nd seed) and gmjoey (3rd seed).

GM Wes probably goes back to US to resume his studies na, all the best to him in North America !

Sep-09-12  spawn2: Hope our sports writers will concentrate/dwell on the triumphs garnered by this over achieving Team. Bang is right in what he wrote in his column today, this team really worked hard for the country.

May I remind everyone that we were seeded 35th and coming from 50th place in last Olympiad.

Placing 21st for me should be considered a great achievement.

It's not only the result but the way the Team faced stronger oppositions from rd 6 onwards.
