EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

http://www.bworldonline.com/content...

Sep-09-12  torrefan: Also it's a matter of perspective. Without changing the results, you may, for example, look at it this way: first round, we lost horribly to China 3.5-:5. Second round we lost again, to Romania 3-1. Next, we lost to Armenia, but only by the slightest margin, 2.5- 1.5. We continue improving the next rounds, drawing with Vietnam and Hungary. Finally, on the sixth round we won. We kept on winning up to the end, capped by a 3-1 romp over previously unbeaten England, 3-1.

We were languishing at the bottom of the pile until our 6 consecutive wins from the 6th to the 11th where we landed 21st.

Two of our 3 losses were to Championship caliber teams, and we drew another such team. We beat several teams much higher placed than us.

It was a magnificent performance!

Viva La Republica Filipina!

Sep-09-12  mysql: But if we lost the first round to China, then the
succeeding teams we would be facing might be different.
Sep-09-12  shadowleaf04: Congrats to Team Philippines, both the Men and Women's Team. Thank you for ably representing us in the Chess Olympiad.

Napansin ko lang sa final ranking, yung 17-20 nandun ang <England, Denmark, Moldova, and Bulgaria.> Lahat sila pinataob natin eh. Tapos nataasan pa tayo sa huli.

Sep-09-12  pinoymaster77: Quirks of the Swiss system.

We can note we're the 3rd best Asian team after China & Vietnam, even higher than Uzbeks (24th) with ex-WC Kasim and 2nd best in Bd2 Filippov, India was 35th and Bangladesh even higher than them at 33rd.

While Kazakhs and Iranians languished with very low finished, Spore even placed higher than Iran! (nightmarish for them, our situation back in 2010)

Sep-09-12  pinoymaster77: Regarding genio's question, eto next KL Open sometime next week, 20 Pinoys now listed. Seeing action are Olympians GMs Barbosa,Paragua & IM Dimaks, plus GM/Coach Jayson (nawala sa last ratings due to > 1 yr di naglaro), plus IMs Dableo,Nolte,Bancod and Marlon B.

Sep-10-12  batongol: Heto naman ang reports ng Phil Star..

http://www.philstar.com/SportsArtic...

Sep-10-12  pinoymaster77: Good am,

Now over a day after, could we survey the kibitzers here :

- Your assessment/recap/comment on the 2012 Olympiad

- Where do we go from here for Phil chess? With endview of 2013 SEAG, then 2014 Olympiad (no chess in 2014 Asian Games & probably in 2015 SEAG)

Sep-10-12  321ycnay: <pinoymaster77>
….just a footnote I guess, there was not a team in the elite 1-20 group in the last Olympiade to field 3 or more players for the full 11 rounds.

We placed 21st and our 3 GM's So, Barbosa, and Paragua all played the maximum number of games. Actually, except for 19th place Moldova, our victim in the 2nd round, there were no other teams in the same batch as mentioned who played 2 team members the maximum.

Champion team Armenia only had 4th board Gabriel Sargissian play the maximum, while 2nd place Russia played only 2nd board Grischuk 11 games. 3rd place Ukraine actually only had top boards Ivanchuk and Ponomariov play 10 games.

Other notable 11-game campaigners were; Gata Kamsky of the USA, Loek Van Wely of the Netherlands, Lazaro Bruzon of Cuba, and Sweden’s top board Nils Grandelius.

Team Moldova as mentioned earlier had Victor Bologan and Dmitry Svetushkin play all 11 games each.

It is ripe an argument therefore, that we have left time management a lot to be desired of and a noteworthy piece of adjustment for future Olympiade campaigns.

Sep-10-12  pinoymaster77: Nice point 321ycnay, didn't notice as much as 3 of our players played ALL 11 games!

If opportunity presents itself, will try to ask the PHI-based GMs on what transpired there in Istanbul.

Sep-10-12  321ycnay: ... team Italy was the most democratic and politically correct, Ha!

First 4 boards all played 9 games each and the 5th board played the remaining 8!

Sep-10-12  321ycnay: <<pinoymaster77>

That'll be nice. Keepin' my ears on the ground!

Sep-11-12  geniokov: Maybe GM Barbosa,GM Paragua and IM Dimakiling can play in Spice Open before KL Open?
Sep-11-12  geniokov: Or GM Antonio,Laylo and Gomet can make a try....Our NCFP should make programs that will upgrade skills of our top rated players! In short, more exposures international.
Sep-11-12  pinoymaster77: genio,
Parang basa ko sa press release ng Spice Cup eh 6 players sa field ng TOP group and kasama Le,Wes and Lagrave. Mukhang malabong 2nd Pinoy.

Based din sa budget constraints eh sa ASEAN tayo makapagpapadala, like sa rest of the year eh sa Malaysia and Indonesia, and mukhang yung sa KL Open next week eh kanya-kanyang sponsors...

Yun ang realidad on limited budget and meron ding ganung challenges for our Olympiad teams but still they performed above expectations, and improved over 2010 finish...

Sep-11-12  bubuli55: Sir Eugene

just want to say thank you for the games. Amazing ! I think I slept better after those wins :) Salamat sir. I wish you more success :)

+ 1 player

FIDE tournament categories
Average rating
Cat : Minimum : Maximum
17 : 2651 : 2675
18 : 2676 : 2700

The Ave of the 5 listed players come Oct 2012 : 2680 (it is now Category 18)

To maintain that average @ category 18 ... Coach Susan should be looking for a GM that would have a rating of 2656+ come Oct 2012.

To be sure ... she should invite her Sister Judit Polgar whose rating would be 2705 (Oct 2012)

Sep-11-12  bubuli55: < To be sure ... she should invite her Sister Judit Polgar whose rating would be 2705 (Oct 2012) >

I was thinking maybe Ray Robson but yes Judith Polgar would be great! :)

Sep-11-12  joeyj: GM Robson would just be 2602 come Oct 2012.
Sep-11-12  pinoymaster77: Yup, tama wala pang US player sa 6-man field, it might be US player, while for Judit eh nasa roster na si GM Balogh, besides since si Susan ang organizer, she will probably avoid inviting her sister to her own pa-tournament...

Nice one on the Spice Cuo Open eh iba pa pala yun, puede pa sana GMs Barbosa and AFGM dun, pero have to consider US visa leadtime and also might prefer to be resting post-Olympiad this October.

For GM Wes, it will be this Spice Cup this Oct and per the interview, he is looking at the PanAm Games in Dec.

GMs Barbosa,Paragua & Candidate Dimaks seeing action in KL Open slated to start Sept 17th. Not sure if they will also play in the Indon Open in Oct.

AFGM Torre probably needs some rest after the family events and the Olympiad. But wondering in Nov whether if it could be the World Seniors or if the Pichay Intl will push through in late Nov...

The rest of local events in NCFP calendar seem to be suspect (Inter-Province, Inter-Schools, Natl Rapids,BOGM Intl) kung matuloy...

Sep-11-12  geniokov: hehehe! Mukhang malabo si Judith dito,Si GM Susan Polgar kasi ang organizer.Well,Anish Giri or Nepomniatchi is a good choice too if only i player needed!
Sep-11-12  geniokov: Or can also be GM Luke McShane of England.
