EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Sep-11-12  geniokov: This Spice cup is a good tournament for GM Wes to exert his pressure to attain a 2700+ rating! Sa atin kasi, lahat eh nasa 2450-2550 lang,so ang pressure eh sa halip na sa kanya, nasa kalaban ang pressure.
Sep-12-12  SEMENELIN: Nice try for team philippines. Until next time. Overall, it was a good performance compared to the last olympiad.
Sep-12-12  pinoymaster77: Nil Maglas interview of TD/GM Jayson at NAIA3 yesterday upon arrival :

Noted ff :

'We need more training'... I'm sure pag-usapan nila ni Pres. Pichay yun on improvement plans

'Kaya PALA ng Pilipino, kaya! SAYANG!'

Kitang-kita yung panghihinayang which mirrors the Pinoy chess community's sentiments too, pero with the benefit of hindsight, if the team indeed got the TOP TEN finish but we know there was not really a FULL preparation, eh we will have it too easy, rest on our laurels and do it all over again in the next Olympiads.

Now na nalaman na 'KAYA PALA', eh the team and NCFP need to WORK HARDER for it ! Plan na for the 2014 Olympiad in Tromso!

Sep-13-12  pinoymaster77: Hi joeyj,

Aside from your endeavours, you can consider formalizing being a sports correpondent, or freelancer...

Sep-13-12  pinoymaster77: 321ycnay,

Ok, here is what I could piece together
based on na-view na Nig Maglas video interviews of IM Dimaks,GM/TD Jayson and GM buddies Barbosa & Paragua.

- Team Composition
Una, I posted in my forum yung mga memory highlights on the 'history' of this 2012 Olympiad team.

The finalized mode of 3 BOGM qualifiers + 2 NCFP seeded players strikes the balance between varied interests in the 'small but compact' chess community.

Kundi ginawa eto at naging 'pure selection' eh di sana nakasama AFGM & IM Dimaks.

Ok pa din etong selection mode (mixed qualifier/seeded) to ensure players na in top playing condition ang makasama, ang refinement lang eh schedule it earlier! Like at least 3 months, or if we target a TOP TEN finish eh at least 6 months before the Olympiad eh formed na ang team.

2012 Olympiad
- Decision to field ALL GM line-up o maximum strength came from the top/NCFP officialdom.

- 'Napasarap' tayo sa taas, competing at the top boards. Other teams like Vietnam eh were in lower boards in earlier rounds, then 'peaked' at the right time with a STRONG finish, the key to a top finish is the final 2 to 3 rounds. For both our teams, eh didn't have that STRONG finish...

- Sayans, yung sa post mortem ni Mac, may winning line daw sana siya sa opening. Had it been a win, eh iba magiging timpla ng match nila... anyway, it was not meant to be YET.

- What is realized is kaya PALA ng Pinoy, so I think there are plans for European campaign for GMs Barbosa & Paragua, this would be GOOD MOVE to get them to the next level...

Sep-14-12  pinoymaster77: Nil Maglas interview of NA A. Chay, he has a lot of good inputs / observations :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agvu...

Sep-14-12  geniokov: Nice posting <PM77> with this interview of Nil Maglas.
Sep-14-12  pinoymaster77: Ok meantime sa FIBA Asia Cup, dikit laban ng Gilas 2 and Chinese Team B youth team, lumamang tayo sa 4th qtr pero leading by 3 pts na daw China going into the final minute!
Sep-14-12  pinoymaster77: Gilas2 lost a narrow one 68-71 to China's Team B, their U22 team inspite of being outrebounded by 27 reboumds! Dami na namang nanghihinayang, and dami na namang armchair and miron coaches ahehe...

Same story as recent Chess Olympiad, have to work hard and prepare for it, and apply the lessons learned. Step by step ang improvement, basta CONTINOUS IMPROVEMENT! GO PILIPINAS!

Sep-14-12  pinoymaster77: Let me take up the 3 sports my sons are into - chess, basketball and football.

For basketball & chess, would still observe and would like to believe we are taking steps or on the road to regaining Asian supremacy or actively contending for it! Pero sa chess, eversince bumalik sa chess scenes just 3 years ago eh wala pa yata akong nakitang nanalo vs sa A Team nila eh. Si GM Wes lang 2 draws vs Wang Yue (2010 Olympiad & Asian Games) and that recent draw vs Wang Hao. Pero still have it in the gut na kaya din silang talunin, our GMs have played these Dings, Yus, Li Chaos & Bu's.

For football, nasa gaining ASEAN supremacy pa lang sila, via the Suzuki Cup, pero I marvel at such small steps forward, like even victories in friendlies eh EUPHORIC ang effect ano! Saka BIG MONEY rolls out for every small success, those football fields are not cheap to build...

Sep-14-12  kardopov: It's final, Ding Liren is the last player included in the Spice Cup 2012. Category 18.
Sep-14-12  kardopov: It's sad, Master isku bid adieu to CG, indefinitely. Puling, on furlough(?), nanovs, suspended. Sigh... I'll be missing their sensible posts. Anyway, go Eugene! One more tourney pls!?
Sep-14-12  spawn2: Good morning,

We just have to continue posting relevant information on this page until our chess friends comeback.

We need to keep the fire burning for GM Eugene Torre! Marami pang kailangan isulat sa kanyang mga chess exploits para yung mapapadpad dito, Pilipino man or dayuhan ay malalaman ang kanyang contributions sa ating Inang Bayan.

On to the next tourney whenever, wherever that will be.

Sep-15-12  pinoymaster77: Good am,

AFGM graced the opening of the NCAA, I hope he also attends the awarding ceremonies.

Meantime, the last round just fired off!

Malakas daw ulan sa Maynila last nite, and probably floodings/trapik. Even the Letran team arrived later than usual at the venue...

Sep-15-12  321ycnay: Ok naman pala <pinoymaster77>, at the very least informed na tayo to further help us in our preparations for the next Olympiade.

I would not be too critical of this, but hard not to recognize though, that micromanaging was partly the culprit to the team's miscalculation and bungled opportunity.

Anyway, the good news is that the country’s chess honchos may now have realized that providing the best case scenario for our team is an essential requirement if our team is to realize its true potential. Maybe from now on there will be no more patchwork preparations... we'll see.

It is so satisfying that our players were able to prove that they can actually compete at the very highest level and that ELO ratings does not reflect the Filipino chesser’s true playing strength and heart. They've shown enough moxie to deserve a better treatment.

Thanks <pm77> for the share.

Sep-15-12  spawn2: I cant forget GM Eugene calling FM Pau the Future more than a year ago in the Zonal's at Tagaytay

Just today, FM Pau "MVP" Bersamina towed Letran Squires to the Championship of the NCAA Chess Juniors Division.

Mukhang di lang AFGM si GM Eugene..sooth sayer din : )

Arriba Letran!

Sep-17-12  pinoymaster77: I'm still thinking out loud how PHI can get to beating China again (regain Asian supremacy someday?), hebigats talaga chess calendar nila, eto katatapos lang ng Olympiad tuloy-tuloy pa din sila. Sa mga ranks ng untitled players na eto malamang sumulpot and next Yu Yangyi o Ding Liren nila. We've already seen their IMs and untitled players play here and in ASEAN tournaments...

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr809...

Sep-17-12  pinoymaster77: 321ycnay / bubuli55,

Am just curious with former PHI and Ateneo top board WIM Cheradee Camacho. I think she is also on scholarship in the Univ of Texas (same school that GM Sadorra attends), but not reading her name in the US chess circuit... hope it's not true she has stopped playing chess altogether?

Baka lang konting guidance or advice to get her on track in the US, even continue WGM campaign sa selected US tournaments, studies permitting...?

Sep-17-12  joeyj: Here's my latest search on WIM Camacho.

http://monroi.com/chess-blog/dr-ale...

She's still under chess scholarship program of UT Dallas.

Somehow magkaiba ang UT Dallas Chess Program sa Webster SPICE program. Mag kaiba ang System !

Mukhang wala sa system ng UT Dallas for their players to represent their countries in major chess events like the Olympiad or even opportunities to receive invitations to other world class chess events.
