EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

GM Eugene can act as playing coach for our SEA Games chess team. Since he is very much familiar with the Fischer Random inner workings, he can play in that format. For the standard format, GMs So and Barbosa should be fielded. Rapid and Blitz can be the domain of GMs Paragua, Antonio and Dimakiling. For the ASEAN type (yung me elepante), some of our battle tested IMs and NMs should start training and familiarizing themselves on the nuisances of the game.

Sep-30-12  spawn2: Checked NCFP calendar and was happy to see that Zonal 3.3 (qualifying tourney for 2013 WCC) is scheduled in December at Tagaytay.

It will be a good international tournament to close year 2012.

Well, Oct na pala so we should get something more firm this month...

Sep-30-12  wordfunph: by Sir Bobby Ang..

<BACK IN 1998 GM Eugene Torre asked me to "computerize" him. The chess GM and journalist Ian Rogers wrote back then that there were only around three of the top 100 GMs in the world who do not use computer assistance in their preparation, and Eugene is one of the three.>

http://www.bworldonline.com/content...

Oct-01-12  pinoymaster77: Thanks wordfunph for sharing that latest B.Ang article, I've just read it and had a lot of smiles while going through the write-up ahehe...

Just to share in general :

- During dinner weeks before the Olympiad departure, AFGM is more up to speed in terms of hardware/software and most importantly was given 'semi-leave' from work so he can have time for chess studies. This means he is now 'in step' sa mga openings, which gives him more confidence in the current games.

- Before the Phil vs England match, from text exchanges with a known chess historian in our CG group eh 'mas preferred' na di AFGM vs Short, and even juggling up the boards would be favorable. I just generally knew that Short had a BIG edge in their match record, but not until I've read Bobby's article did I realize that before that fateful Olympiad match-up eh AFGM hasn't won over Nigel! Well, now that I know then YES it was a SWEET SWEET victory for AFGM! And I could remember the write-ups in the chess sites and blogs then toasting the Phils. Maam Susan Polgar even wrote I think that the Philippines is 'the Cinderella of the Olympiad'...

Watch out for more !!

Everybody LOVEs a WINNER talaga, just look at the write-ups...

Oct-01-12  pinoymaster77: Got a text/clarification from chess historian-friend and also per talk with AFGM also, there was AFGM win over Short in the Carlsberg tourney circa in 1986.

Per return call to AFGM as he enters his games history in chessbase :

- Only 6 of the Short wins were in standard time control. 2 were in blitz games.

- There is now 2 AFGM wins, counting Carlsberg circa 1986 and the 2012 Istanbul Olympiad.

- Total of about 14 standard games with 6 draws and 6-2 score for wins.

So there, for our common reference !

Oct-03-12  kardopov: Hmm, GM Wesley still outdistances his closest Filipino pursuer by more than 100 points. This, so far, could mean lesser international exposure for the rest of Filipino players. Still, Philippine Chess is in pitiful condition. So many talents but so little opportunity. Mabuhay ang naghihikahos na Inang Bayan. (Borrowed from Sir worditch.) Oooopps... Careful... Cyberlaw is now in effect. Is this law beneficial or an additional burden to Masang Pilipino? Just asking.
Oct-05-12  wordfunph: master <Isku> paki-explain naman, based on CG dbase decisive games..

Tal - Gligoric 10 to 2
Torre - Tal 3 to 0
Gligoric - Torre 6 to 0

di ko maarok :)

thanks master..

While FM Paulo can go 'GM and IM hunting' dito !
