EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Oct-18-12  shadowleaf04: Eugene Torre Interview.

http://www.chessdom.com/eugenio-tor...

A nice read! :)

Oct-18-12  wordfunph: thanks sir <shadowleaf04>..

"Chess is like life. When you are checkmated it seems the King is dead but in fact it is just trapped. It can’t move, it is trapped, but it is not dead."

- GM Eugenio O. Torre

Oct-18-12  pinoymaster77: shadowleaf04,

Thanks for sharing, a nice interview indeed !

Oct-19-12  pinoymaster77: Na-recall ko tuloy yung excerpt from AFGM's interview, the setback in the last Olympiad and etong Indon tourney once again dominated by the Chinese.

What makes their elite team tick, and how do we NARROW the gap soon?

Oct-20-12  pinoymaster77: Bobby Ang's latest piece on the 1972 Asian Zonals featuring 2 of AFGM's games:

http://www.bworldonline.com/content...

First one mentioned the 'Torre Gambit' while the 2nd one was featured in GM Nunn's book on middlegame...

Oct-21-12  joeyj: <Wesley So No-Loss record Vs 2700+ ends at #42>

http://chessaccount.wordpress.com/c...

Oct-21-12  joeyj: Good day BW-GETS !!!
Oct-21-12  pinoymaster77: Hi joeyj,
That's still a mean record with 43 'no loss' (win or draw) vs 1 loss, after that final round draw with GM Le.

I just hope he finds the right formula to exact more wins vs these 2700s/Hydra GMs. Can take the cue from Carlsen on grindout wins, get it to endgame phase...

Oct-21-12  joeyj: ^^^ Hahaha ... the 43th ... will be the #1 for Season 2 bro <PM77> !!!

I receive 1-comment in my blog and it's very interesting facts i've discovered.

Read more here what it is all about:

Oct-21-12  pinoymaster77: Hi joeyj,

Noted, look forward to GM Wes' 6th win soon vs Hydra GM.

Can't help it, but maybe the comparison to a 'young Anand' is not apt, maaga pang maging draw master like our current world champ. Better to emulate the styles of Magnus,Levon and even Chucky?

Oct-23-12  wordfunph: amusing anecdote from GM Eugene Torre's book Beyond the 13th Move published in 1978..

<In Bombay a friendly American in his early twenties boarded the plane and introduced himself to Eugene as Dave. The two shook hands.

Some 15 minutes later, Dave casually brought out, from his satchel, a small makeshift wooden board that looked all too familiar to Eugene. He had a similar one in his own bag and was about ready to take it out himself.

While going through the motions of arranging the pieces, Dave noticed the excited expression on the face of his new-found acquaintance from the Philippines. "Oh, I'm a chess addict," Dave remarked. "I play alone sometimes, but you seem to be familiar with the pieces. Why don't we both enjoy a friendly game or two?"

"I'd rather not," Eugene replied, embarrassed.

"C'mon. I'll help you along the way," Dave insisted.

After the first two games had ended at rather short notice, the American was flustered: "Listen man, I was the champion in my college days, which wasn't too long ago. But you're a real jock! What's your profession anyway?"

"I'm the Asian chess champion," Eugene answered, his face flushed.

"Damn it, I should have known better," laughed Dave with typical American good nature. "But just wait till my Bobby Fischer gets to you. He'll annihilate you. Has he ever played you yet?"

"No, but I'm looking forward to that," Eugene smiled.>

Oct-26-12  spawn2: Good morning GETS,

Had dinner with GM Eugene last night. Blow by blow account to follow: )

Oct-29-12  kardopov: <Gud morning spawn> Where is the blow by blow account you promised us? Am not obliging you but I'm salivating... pls.
Oct-31-12  spawn2: <Advance Bday Dinner with The Legend>

Time flies really fast. It was just like yesterday when we had our dinner with GM Eugene to celebrate his 60th bday.

And now, after almost a year, we are again sitting in Cyma Eastwood to celebrate his 61st Birthday. Cyma Restaurant is now recognized as the official restaurant of GETS get together!

The man who arrived at 7 pm did not look like he is already in possession of a senior citizen card. Could be mistaken for someone who was born just 50 summers ago.

Pulsar, Epistle and Dari Castro accompanied me to continue the tradition of breaking bread with GM Torre to celebrate his bday.

Although his brithday is still a week from now, we know that there will be other celebrations prepared by his family, friends, business associates and other supporters that is why we deemed it prudent to schedule it sooner. Iba na nakauna: )

The group met at SM Megamall to buy the cake and our small gift for GM Eugene at Toy Kingdom.

At 6 pm, we proceeded to Cyma Eastwood. Since it is already our 6th visit at Cyma Eastwood, the head waiter immediately recognized us. Slaps of high fives were exchange and instructions on when the cake will be brought to the table.

One good thing in having constant dinner with a health buff is that you tend to acquire his choice of food. Just imagine, two years ago, during our first dinner, only GM Eugene ordered for something that swims, everyone else went for the old reliable red meat. Fast forward to present, 4 requested for Salmon and 1 for Blue Marlin: )

To be continued..

Oct-31-12  kardopov: just here, waiting for the continuation...:)
Nov-01-12  wordfunph: Letranista padre <spawn2>, ispasiba sa part 1 :)
Nov-01-12  kardopov: <wordfunph: Letranista padre <spawn2>, ispasiba sa part 1 :)> Pwede, mabait eh. Pero pwede ring gigolo, magandang lalaki eh. hehe...
Nov-01-12  spawn2: <Advance B-day Dinner with The Legend> Part 2

Before we started our dinner, GM Eugene pulled out from his clutch bag tokens from the Indonesian Open. Another chess treasure which will go in my chess vault.

As we partake of our dinner, we started swapping stories specifically on the Olympiad wherein Philippines improved on their previous 50th placing.

In summary, these were his thoughts:

- The 21st place finish is an
impressive performance. Moreover, in
9th round, they were sitting next to
the top board. This is the closest
they have come to the board 1
position since he started playing in
1970. If his recollection was
correct, they experienced playing on
board 5 or 6 during the 1988
Thessaloniki Olympiad.

- He was struggling against GM Berkes
of Hungary but was able to recover in
the latter part of the game.

- He mentioned that he was interviewed
by the New in Chess for their Special
Olympiad Edition. Checked the New In
Chess site and saw that his game
against GM Short is featured in the
magazine.

- His 21st appearance was really
recognized by both organizers and
players. A lot of people
congratulated him on this milestone.
He was told that he is the only
player who has played in more than
half of the Oympiad since it started.

- One of his objectives is to promote
Fischer Random. There is a
possibility that a tournament here in
the country will be organized to
start the ball rolling.

- For the next Olympiad on Tromso,
Norway (2014), hopefully, there is
again a qualifying tournament for RP
Team. If there is, he will play and
try to make the team.

- 3.3 Zonals will be in January 2013 in
Tagaytay. This will be his next
tournament. World Chess Seniors
Championship will have to wait. Maybe
next year : )

- I mentioned about wordfunph's
treasure find, the book on GM Torre
"Beyond the 13th Move". I asked him
about the santol incident and he said
that he remembered it very well
because the plaster used to cover
half of his upper body made it
difficult for him to scratch the
itchy part of his body.

After dinner, I then motioned for the head waiter to bring the cake to our table. Both GM Eugene and I got surprised when the waiter and waitresses wailed out a Happy Birthday song. That was not part of the request : ) I guess, they've grown fond of GM Eugene who is a regular customer of the restaurant. After the blowing of cake, we handed our simple gift.

It was an Iron Man action figure from GETS. I explained that this action figure represents how we viewed him as our chess hero. He is a leader, tough, intelligent and has a good heart.

Hopefully, before the year ends, BW- GETS can have one last get together to celebrate X'mas.

Until then..Go GM Torre!

Nov-01-12  kardopov: I'm very much elated that GM Eugene still continue to enjoy playing. This must be totally in contrast during the time he abandoned chess and hibernated. He was still very strong then. Some milestone in furtherance were not achieved because of that. I cry "One more time for Tromso" to carve his niche as the iron man of chess. Go Eugene! You are truly a chess hero par excellence. For the young ones who are starting to think of chess as a profession, here is a man, a great player of Filipino descent, worth emulating. Ispasiba!
Nov-02-12  joeyj: Do u have <pics> for the <Advance B-day Dinner with The Legend> bro <spawn> ???
Nov-03-12  spawn2: <joeyj>

Unfortunately, we were not able to capture the Kodak moments. It will only reside in our data base of treasured experiences. Will ensure that next time we will be ready: )

Nov-03-12  Nf3em: sayans!
Nov-03-12  allan.dinglasan: Great story <Spawn>! I missed the great party with great people!
Nov-03-12  allan.dinglasan: Two Giants in C3 are playing, Nijat_Abasov and Petrik06- 2996 and 2802! nice to watch!
