EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Nov-03-12  spawn2: It's 8:45 am of November 4 which means, today is GM Eugene Torre's Birthday!

In your name, pasisimulaan ko na ngang maturuan. More power po, Ginoong GM Torre.

Nov-05-12  Nf3em: Happy Birthday AFGM El Eugenio ...
Nov-11-12  pinoymaster77: While tahimik sa natl chess news this Nov eh will mention UAAP. Sa Dec pa Deped InterSecondary (FM Pau plans to play) and the AFPI InterComml chess team, while sa Jan yung 2 intl tourneys na Pichay Intl and 3.3 Zonals.

UAAP will be in Jan, but the preparations for this annual event is in high gear. Mga HS ay bubuno din muna ng 3rd quarterly probably in Dec / Jan, while sa College eh kaumpisa pa lang ng 2nd sem (for those who have such skeds).

In the College ranks, expecting UP to contend in both Men's and Women's this year. AFGM's lone child is alumnus of the Maroons women's team. Expected to slug it out in the Men's would be defending champ FEU, darkhorse would probably be DLSU,UST,Adamson.

For Women's defending champs DLSU still has powerhouse line-up, but UP has some pieces, while FEU also lurking around the corner...

Sa HS, FEU still expected to be dominant, kumpleto pa malakas 4 boards nila. Maybe fighting for 2nd would be Adamson (led by Enriquez,Samantila)and Ateneo.

UST has just started on its build-up and reportedly plans to field rookie recruits MJ Marcellana and Jasper Marce in the top boards... how far the team goes depends on how the other mainstays (Tucay) perform/contribute....

Nov-12-12  pinoymaster77: Meron nang technical guidelines / rules sa NCFP site yung 2 intl events na 3.3 Zonals Jan 3 to 11 in Tagaytay (Jan 12 departures to Baguio), then the 1st Chairman's Cup (Pichay Intl) in Teacher's Camp,Baguio which starts on Jan 13 through 21...
Nov-13-12  Benzol: Eugenio fans check out 1st Burroughs Computers Grandmaster (1978) He performed fantastically here.

Nov-13-12  wordfunph: <Benzol> nice!
Nov-14-12  spawn2: Dear GETS,

A year from now, the

<EUGENE TORRE CHESS CENTER>

will rise!

More on this on my next post.

Thanks!

Nov-19-12  spawn2: GRANDMASTER EUGENE TORRE CHESS CENTER

Two Chess Titans have joined forces in order for a dream to materialize.

Mr. Cesar M. Iligan, Founder of Fianchetto Realty and a known chess patron and Grand Master Eugenio O. Torre, President of Fianchetto Realty and Asia’s 1st Grand Master came into an agreement that will pave the way to the birth of GM Eugene Torre Chess Center (GETCC).

A four (4) story building will rise in the heart of Quezon City which will become the home of GETCC a year from now. Construction will start by January 2013 and official launch is targeted to happen either by end of November or 1st week of December 2013.

A spacious area in the basement has been earmarked for the use of GETCC. As explained by Mr. Iligan, “the basement space consisting of 150 sqm in floor area is by “usufruct” allowing the use by the Chess Center for 25 years and renewable for another 25 years without having to reapply except an official notice that the usufruct will be continued.

All the income coming from the GETCC shall belong to the foundation to sustain its operation. Fianchetto Realty shall advance the P 1 Million required by Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to be recognized as a foundation so that all donations can be tax deductible.

The Foundation will solicit donations for chess clocks, chess tables and chairs, computer laptops, chess sets and other chess paraphernalia.”

With regard to the other floors in the building, the Ground Floor is allocated for commercial use (bank branch, fast food outlets etc.), the 2nd Floor will be Fianchetto Realty’s office while the 3rd and 4th floor will have rooms that can be rented by titled chess players whenever there are international tournaments in Manila.

GETCC will give chess lovers like us a venue to meet other supporters of the game. Here, we can play, meet our chess heroes and discuss the future of Philippine Chess and how we can give our support. Chess lovers from the province can meet their chess friends at the GETCC to play a game or two.

GM Torre mentioned that one of his objectives is to develop chess programs through GETCC targeting the youth. These programs will be designed to enhance their discipline, skills and thinking process for use not only in chess but also in life.

But what makes GETCC truly special is the man behind it. The Game of Kings has been very kind to GM Torre. Chess has given him fame, a comfortable life and lots of friends and supporters. He said that GETCC is another vehicle he can use to give something back to the game and to the people who have given him so much support through the years.

The Grandmaster Eugene Torre Chess Center will be run by professional chess players who will really understand the needs of its target clientele.

Truly, a very good development for Philippine Chess! ,

Nov-19-12  wordfunph: thanks <spawn2>!
