EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

The Class of 1990 and Class of 1951.

"Class of 1990" -- the year which produced fantastic chess talents like Magnus Carlsen, Sergey Karjakin, Ian Neponmiachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Dmitry Andreikin.

"Class of 1951" -- this is the birth year of Anatoly Karpov, Ulf Andersson, Jan Timman, and ... Eugene Torre.

Would like to add these three in Class of 1951: Zoltan Ribli, Gyula Sax and Rafael Vaganian

Nov-20-12  spawn2: The Class of 1951 is so strong that of the 7 names given above, 6 played in the 1984 edition of USSR vs Rest of the World. Only Gyula Sax did not see action.

Anatoly Karpov USSR
Rafael Vaganian USSR

Eugene Torre ROW
Ulf Andersson ROW
Jan Timman ROW
Zoltan Ribli ROW

I wonder if there is going to be a 2013 Edition of USSR vs ROW, how many of the Class 1990 will be tapped to play.

Nov-21-12  spawn2: <I wonder if there is going to be a 2013 Edition of USSR vs ROW, how many of the Class 1990 will be tapped to play.> Did some checking and if there will be a USSR vs ROW 2013 and basis of the composition of the teams will be based on the 2012 November list, it seems only two of the Class 1990 will be tapped to play.

Magnus Carlsen ROW
Sergey Karjakin USSR

Nov-21-12  pinoymaster77: spawn2,

Nice notes on the 2 classes, it seems it is every 40 years for such batches to appear...

Nov-22-12  kardopov: I think those born under the years ending in 3 emerged and will soon emerge better. Think of Fischer:1943. How 'bout Kasparov: 1963. Was there anybody else born under the year ending in 3?
Nov-22-12  kardopov: Juk juk juk!
Nov-22-12  kardopov: Can't stand by my comment. I'm sounding like Tolengoy.
Nov-22-12  spawn2: "When he plays his games, the Philippine Legend demonstrates the same calm and control. Quietly, he executes his moves. His face betrays nothing of what he thinks about the position. When his opponent resigns, there is not a smidgeon of bravado, and when he has to admit defeat himself, he does so with grace"

Patikim pa lang yan! With the NIC Olympiad Report containing GM Torre's interview and Beyond the 13th Move given to me by bro <wordfunph> dami ko info mapopost dito: )

Nov-28-12  Deadlost: <kardopov: Was there anybody else born under the year ending in 3?> Beljavsky, born in 1953. A former WJ champ, genuine talent, and an enduring player, still strong at 59.
Dec-01-12  pinoymaster77: For chess discussion / animation, from the latest FIDE ratings eh GM Magnus now skyhigh with 2848, and can reportedly eclipse Ex-Champ Kasparov's record of 2851 in the about to start London Classic... GM Caruana now #5 at > 2780, while GM Giri stuck at low 2700 levels at 2720...

How about some dreaming, would matches like Carlsen vs Kasparov, or Carlsen vs Anand ignite interest in the chess world?

Dec-04-12  pinoymaster77: With Carlsen at 2857 live rating so far, eh may tickler question na sa S. Polgar blog if he can breach 2900?

And, for discussion's sake, does this make him the STRONGEST player of all time?? Malamang may arguments/ points to be raised mga fans nila Kasparov & Bobby Fischer, well let's hear it...

Dec-05-12  SugarDom: Ba't puro matino usapan dito?

Dec-08-12  spawn2: <pm77>

Its possible na by end of London tourney, (win or draw) he will attain highest live rating and official rating (by January). Tama nga yung nagsabi na "records are meant to be broken"

<Sugardom>

You know us here, medyo sedate mga posters here: ) Information about GM Torre lang most of the time and discussions of other chess tourneys and personalities from time to time: )

<Wordfunph>

Sa bilis ng panahon eh before we know it 41st Olympiad will be just around the corner.

It was nice seeing <kapmigz> again in the flesh after a long time: )

Dec-08-12  spawn2: <mcten>

I tried a quick check at chess-results.com for the results but cant find the tourney. Will check again later.

Thanks for posting.

Dec-09-12  Deadlost: <pinoymaster77: With Carlsen at 2857 live rating so far... does this make him the STRONGEST player of all time?? > He'd be the highest rated player of all time, that's for sure and let's leave it at that. Strongest, greatest, most dominating, best - a lot of yardsticks, each one with its own set of criteria. In fact, to me, he is a post-modern player who has found a way to outsmart the technology of the age. While it's de rigueur for the top players to "memorize" openings according to Fritz, here is someone smart enough to avoid that dialogue and set his own terms: he chooses openings or variations not conventionally popular but not necessarily bad either, where one's chess talent (and not memorization) shall be the determinant of the conflict. When GM Portisch preached that one's only goal in the opening is to reach a playable middlegame, Carlsen seems to have taken it to heart, confident in his abilities and willpower to dominate his opponent and, along the way, adopting Alekhine's mantra: If you beat me in the opening you still have to beat me in the middlegame; and, if you still beat me in the middlegame, try to beat me in endgame. It's a pugnacious stance ( see that jaw?)and most of the time, he wins... ugly. But wins just the same. It's a scary style and he's got it all down pat.
Dec-10-12  SugarDom: Well said <Deadlost>.
Dec-10-12  pinoymaster77: Deadlost,
Nice inputs. I'm relegated to re-playing the chess moves of Magnus' games, but could not quite place his 'style'. It is obvious his GRIT and DETERMINATION to grind out wins is a STANDOUT quality in today's modern age, and gets out of the 'boring draws' syndrome.

Last I looked at the points standings, he was leading by a mile, and Kramnik was a far second.

I hope the players aspiring to join the ELITE level take the cue from Magnus

Dec-10-12  Deadlost: pinoymaster77, I guess we're one in seeing that a major part of Carlsen's strength is non-chessic in nature. Which means, had Carlsen been engaged in a different sport/s,he'd still be competitive because of it.Of course, his natural talent in chess simply led to the equation 1 (chess)+1 (attitude)=3(domination).
Dec-11-12  bubuli55: I can't say Magz is better than Kaspy just yet. No matter what the ELO indicates. ( RP Olympiad team was underrated. But that's another barn to paint. ) Look what happened to the Texans. Just when i thought they are ready, they got plastered by the Patriots 48-14. It may have been a bad day ...

I am off track here. I need the bookie :)
