EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jan-26-13  spawn2: Just came from Tagaytay after watching Rd 6 of Zonals 3.3. Was able to follow the game of GM Eugene vs Manny Yu who really gave a good fight. Based on my batil understanding he had the edge somewhere in the middle game but after one weak move, GM Eugene was able to turn the table around.

After the game, GM Eugene "gamely" analyzed the position with M. Yu

Will use Crafty of ICC to analyze the game.

Jan-29-13  spawn2: Congrats to GM Wes for joining GM Oliver to the WCC!

It was also nice to read GM Eugene finishing his campaign on a positive note by winning his last round game against dangerous IM Nguyen Van Huy. Actually GM Torre inflicted IM Van Huy's only loss in the tournament.

Jan-29-13  pinoymaster77: We have a lot to be thankful for these past 2 or 3 weeks after the finish of the PSC Cup and 3.3 Zonals here in our home soil :

- GM Wesley qualifying to the World Cup, joining GM Barbosa

- Untitled and little known (before this Zonals) Bernadette Galas copping 2nd place and securing an OUTRIGHT WIM Title.

- Top 4 finish by Pinoys in the PSC Cup.

- Haridas Pascua breaching > 2400 as last requirement for the IM title

- Reportedly, FM Turqueza in scoring 5pts secured an IM norm (being confirmed with him)

Per TD/GM Jayson, NCFP has receipt of payment of close to 1900 Euros back in August, it seems nagka-gap sa accounting and Sir Toti Abundo is helping sort it out.

Actually bitin pa daw pag gawad ng IM and WIM Titles to Salcedo & Frayna due to this, and hope will be settled soon. Pati pagbalik ng Phils sa Feb FIDE ratings.

Feb-02-13  metrolirot: The February FIDE ratings are now released. Wala pa rin sa listahan ang Philippines. Bakit kaya..??
Feb-05-13  pinoymaster77: Atty metrolirot, baka di pa settled yung accounting ng previous NCFP payment, per GM Jayson, Sir Toti Abundo helping sort it out with FIDE, per short chat nuon sa Tagaytay during the Zonals.

Actually, bitin pa IM and WIM titles nila Salcedo and Frayna (FEU players) due to this situation. Eh nakalinya pa sila IM-Elect Pascua. Yung FM title eh pagkabayad ng FIDE fee eh can get that title na, per my understanding

Feb-06-13  spawn2: Positive news naman guys,

GM Eugene Torre has acquired a new title. He is South East Asia's first FIDE Senior Trainer (FST).

Not everyone can obtain the title since the requirements are quite stringent.

Amongst the list of requirements, two stands out:

- Should have written a book
- Should have trained a World Chess Champion

In the case of GM Torre,

He has written/co-written two books Beyond the 13th move and The Next Wave of Philippine Chess)

He has trained/seconded the great Bobby Fischer.

I can see that this new development will have great impact to the future of Philippine Chess.

Congrats GM Eugene!

Feb-06-13  torrefan: Congratulations to my idol and tocayo!

FST is, however, new to me? What does an FST do? Is that a position with salary (like a fide officer) or just a description (like being a gm)?

Feb-06-13  Nf3em: Congrats idol "El Eugenio"!

Ty brod <alex> for sharing the good news ;-)

Feb-06-13  spawn2: <torrefan>

Will post tomorrow additional info on FST.

<Nf3em>

Welcome bro <Danny>! Will post more good news in the coming days including the first project of the ETCF and FCCA as soon as everything is confirmed.

Feb-08-13  freakclub: Thank you sir <joeyj>. Curious lang po ako...yung highest peak rating kasi ni GM Torre ay 2560 ayon sa CG. Kung sa ganitong panahon kaya po, dahil mayroong "inflation" sa Elo Rating, ano po kaya yung equivalent nito?
Feb-08-13  spawn2: <freakclub>

Please allow me to share my little knowledge on the subject.

Actually, the highest ELO rating (official) attained by GM Torre was 2580. This was achieved around 1983 after his successful run in the Toluca Interzonals of 82. His having shared 1st place in the Interzonals and attaining 2580 resulted in the ff:

- Candidates Match against GM Zoltan Ribli of Hungary in Alicante, Spain, 1983

- Joined the Rest of the World (ROW) Team vs USSR in the USSR vs ROW 1984

With regard to rating inflation, the estimate is that around 150 ELO points give or take a couple of points should be added to past ELO ratings. Which means his 2580 is equivalent to <2730>.

I have another way of establishing the equivalent rating of GM Torre in today’s scale (could be crude though).

During GM Torre’s peak, he was ranked 20th in the world. So what I did is I check current FIDE rating and look for the person/rating who occupies the 20th spot.

As of February, 2013, it’s GM Dmitry Jakovenko toting a <2734> elo points.

Of course, these things are subject to debate: )

Thanks.

Feb-08-13  freakclub: <spawn2> Thanks for that! I was enlightened. ;p
