EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

May-08-13  pinoymaster77: Nice news, nagka-clue ako na AFGM guested in the PSA Forum with Red Dumuk when vonvon posted a pic in FB groups, here's the press release, good plan on working out live streaming of the top boards and having TV at the hotel lobby! At least, PHI is up with the internet times! Goods news also is GM Ino Sadorra reportedly plans to play! http://www.philstar.com/sports/2013...
May-14-13  Bradidik: Lalaro ba ang idol natin sa palaro ni Manny?
May-14-13  pinoymaster77: I think AFGM will focus on ETCF organizing the event and main Instructor din sya dun sa FIDE Coaching seminar.

May-15-13  pinoymaster77: Yes, I just texted Sally and she replied na yes lalaro daw si FM Pau.

Nung una kong nakita yung Philstar article last month (around the Age Group finals) at nakita ko na ETCF ang Organizer eh yun agad tinext ko privately to spawn2 kung makakalaro pa AFGM. Kasi nga ang organizing of such a GRAND event eh di biro and madaming detalye na atupagin. Saka di rin fair to himself and to his fans kung di preparado to play at such high Asian level.

Many Asian GM bigshots expected to be in the field, sa ngayon eh suspense pa din...

May-16-13  pinoymaster77: Eto pa lang article na-browse this am, it was also posted by vonvon in FB groups yesterday... http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/0...

May-17-13  pinoymaster77: Ayos yun ha, matutuloy ang livegames coverage! Malalaman natin mamaya kung ilang boards!

Punta raw epistle, pulsar & nanobrain sa opening at 2pm. Also expected regge and dari to be there, aside of course from spawn2 who could be the emcee.

May-18-13  pinoymaster77: Naka-setup eh 8 DGT boards - top 5 for Men and 3 for Women. And nasa chess-results.com pa! http://livechess.chessdom.com/site/

May Pinoy resistance naman, FM MK Turqueza took the scalp of GM Dao, while NM Emmanuel Emperado ambushed GM Gundavaa. GMs Sadorra & Gomez won. Thought IM Garma (w/ GM Megaranto) and IM Nadera (w/ GM Sasikiran) had winning chances but settled for draws. David Elorta drew with Indian GM Adhiban.

In the distaff side, it was not so good. Only WNM Jodilyn Fronda of DLSU won over WIM Medina, FEU's Gladys Romero secured a draw while going down with losses were WIM Perena, WNM Frayna,WFM San Diego, WIM Galas, WNM Docena,WNM Bernales,Shania Mendoza. Bawi sa next rounds.

Kung mapasyal ulit, what do you think on NM Emperado's chances? 2 good things are na-meet agad yung 3 GMs from 3 different Federations, and so far TPR is well above 2600. Ilang points kaya for GM and IM norms, maybe we can safely assume average rating of opposition > 2500 ?

May-23-13  spawn2: Today is round 6 of the Manny Pacquiao Cup and the 3rd day for the Grivas Torre Trainers Seminar. The Eugene Torre Chess Foundation led by GM Eugene Torre has been busy for the past 2 months preparing for these events and I can say that based on initial feedback, the Foundation has done its homework. Hope those who have not visited Midas Hotel and Casino to watch the games will have time in the next 3 days to drop by.

There are souvenir items being sold in the venue such as t-shirts, pens, mugs which are very affordable.

May-25-13  pinoymaster77: We have the ETCF to thank for, livening up the Philippine chess world and reviving the class of this 'game of kings' as it should be.

Culminating events today with the final round, blitz event and awarding!

May-26-13  spawn2: Manny Pacquiao Cup - check

Grivas/Torre Training Seminar - check

EugeneTorre Chess Center Groundbreaking -check

All I can say is Mission Accomplished!

But what really warms my heart is when GM Sasikiran requested that he be allowed to say something during the closing ceremony.

He said that on behalf of the players, he wants to thank the organizer and sponsors for a well run tournament and that they enjoyed the their stay.

Congrats GM Eugene and ETCF!

May-26-13  pinoymaster77: Spassiba to the ETCF team and AFGM/Marilin :

- Successful sa livegames ng 8 boards (top 4 boards for Men & Women, may gender equality!)

- Prompt updates sa chess-results.com

- Awarding of the prizes IN CASH, as advertised!

- Classy, comfortable venue

We hope masundan pa ganyang events. Looking forward also to the next projects of ETCF.

Sana yung mga nakatapos ng Trainers Seminar, ma-apply sa actual chess development ng young players, or if practicing varsity Coaches eh elevate the level of play!

May-26-13  spawn2: Congressman Manny Pacquiao is the MAN!

Providing not only financial backing but more importantly lending his name to the event truly made it special. Hopefully, he has set an example for others to follow with regard to chess sponsorship.

Cafe Puro which provided overflowing coffee during the last two days, Alaxan and Motolite/Oriental also were very important sponsors.

Midas Hotel and Casino really provided an excellent venue. Hopefully, next year we can do it there again.

Last night, I was pleasantly surprised to see such huge number of fans. Chess is alive and kicking in the country.

May-27-13  joeyj: <Mark Paragua Qualifies for Chess World Cup 2013; Li Chao Wins, Barbosa 2nd>

Grandmaster Mark Paragua, the 2013 Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Cup International Chess & 2012 Philippines National Chess titlist, pinned the 2nd of the five(5) qualification berth for the Chess World Cup (CWC) 2013 available in the just concluded Manny Pacquiao Cup – Asian Continental Chess (ACC) Championship 2013 in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines conducted on 18-26 May 2013 with Midas Hotel as the venue.
