EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jun-04-13  pinoymaster77: Etong halos magkasunod this June na 14th ASEAN Age Group in Chiang Mai,Thailand then followed by the Asian Youth Chess in Iran would be the best gauge or barometer of PHI's standing in ASEAN and Asia.

These are the BIG annual intl events for chess kiddie / youth players.

As I recalled for the 13th ASEAN edition last year eh those who got the GOLD in standard event were Joel Pimentel in U20 (outright IM title) and FM Paulo Bersamina in U14, and have to re-check the placing of Austin Jacob Literatus in the U16.

Jun-07-13  geniokov: Congratz sa achievement ng mga Pinoys sa larangan ng Ahedres.Masaya ako at 3 Pinoy ang pumasok sa WCC.(World Chess Cup).Another is that the "Live Rating" of our top players were improving! 1) Wesley So (2704)
2) Oliver Barbosa (2572)
3) Catalino Sadorra (2572)
4) Mark Paragua ( 2569)

As i said,If they will maintain above 2550 rating performance i mean "Live Rating",pupusta ako na ang Philippines will land to Top 10 sa next Chess Olympiad! Mabuhay po tayong lahat!

Jun-07-13  pinoymaster77: Ayos yan sakin genio, the 4 young GMs you listed plus AFGM Torre (wish list ko lang) eh may laban nga yan. PERO dapat may sustained exposure sa tough European tournaments, months before the 2014 Olympiad !
Jun-07-13  pinoymaster77: Sa on-going 14th AAG, eh sa 15 golds so far in rapid and blitz, eh kita disparity sa Boys & Girls, traditionally we get more golds in Boys and it continues.

And also noting our G10 and G12 ranks are not 'ASEAN competitive' (that's a 4 year 'hole'), but I think this can be remedied, not even a formal, organized program but small groups working together. Like for example, the Girls in regular tune-ups vs Boys sa blitz. Given na these days, the playing years for Women usually stop in their 20's, sa age group ranks talaga ang source for next Women's teams.

Near sweep in Boys' blitz. Our main barometer would still be the centerpiece STANDARD events, which will unfold in the next 5 days.

Jun-09-13  pinoymaster77: I saw this Philboxing article published by metrolirot in FB groups, and need to share here on ETCF's programs :

http://philboxing.com/news/story-84...

Jun-10-13  SugarDom: nabanggit pala dun si <spawn2> and <regge>.
Jun-10-13  lakers4sho: They need to make the local tournaments FIDE rated, so as to help the local players gain ratings if they don't have the funds to send them overseas.
Jun-10-13  SugarDom: Indeed. That is one of the shortcomings of our federation.
Jun-11-13  pinoymaster77: That's good idea, if no budget for sending more players overseas, eh allot the budget for sending the PGNs to FIDE and pay the fees, they can even make the submitted games selective, for the players who have gained major ELO, if that's allowed.

First things first, NCFP to settle with FIDE this long standing issue on the fees, since Jan 2013 the locally-based players don't have ELO in FIDE's site.

National tournaments like the BOGM,Natl Age Group finals, Natl Jrs, PNG, Batang Pinoy could hopefully be covered.

Jun-11-13  lakers4sho: Is Battle of the GMs normally FIDE rated? Last year, for example, was it?
Jun-11-13  lakers4sho: I think Paulo Bersamina would already by in the 2400s (FIDE) if the local tourneys were rated.
Jun-12-13  pinoymaster77: Checking at joeyj's chessaccount, dun sa makita pa sa current page eh kasama BOGM 2012 sa liveratings tracking, meaning counted sa FIDE ELO.

Ang mga di yata submitted before eh Natl Age Group finals & the previous Inter-Province which GM Wes topped.

Jun-12-13  lakers4sho: I see, thanks. Now, if only the Phil federation can finally pay its FIDE dues.

I wonder how they'll settle the World Cup ratings if the Philippines doesn't pay before then. Really embarrassing.

Jun-15-13  pinoymaster77: Pinapabulabog na with FB chess groups, but these are mainly composed of individual chess enthusiasts.

Maybe the ETCF officials / core have the proper channel and clout to influence the speedy resolution of this long festering FIDE ratings issue please !

Jun-15-13  pinoymaster77: I think even the Alphaland Non-Masters tournaments eh the organizers earlier announced for their editions last year eh they can submit the players' results to NCFP, but these are for rapid ratings.

Even for BLITZ ratings, I heard FIDE extended their 'grace period' na no FIDE fees kaya nauso na lately na kung may major intl event eh may blitz event na. Latest example yung sa MPC 2013 at Midas Hotel.

Kaya lang, for the STANDARD ratings eh the Federation has to pay the FIDE fees for these.

Jun-15-13  pinoymaster77: This is basically the same contents and written also by Eddie Alinea, but the title is much better and the photo from many years earlier... http://www.interaksyon.com/interakt...
Jun-19-13  spawn2: Speaking of the youth, the Foundation will have to find hundreds of Alekhine Nouri to be guided to become a Eugene Torre/Wesley So, terror on the chessboard or a Cesar Iligan/Regge Tee who became successful people outside of chess.

It is very important that the Foundation have lots of young, strong players in the pool to increase the chance of finding that one truly special player who can compete at the Championship level.

Jun-19-13  pinoymaster77: Para sa mga malapit nang mag-graduate sa Youth, eh sa katatapos lang na Spartan Mining Intercollegiate eh able to complete the rally from behind were Mens champion Lyceum (30K top prize) and inidvidual champion IM Joel Pimentel.

Sa Women's, FEU Team A bagged the championship and 20k prize, and individual champ ay WIM Candidate Janelle Frayna.

These winning teams can represent a City in the Asian Intercities to be held in Tagaytay in October.

Related to this, wondering if AFGM can have time to play and possibly spearhead or Coach / manage a team, a QC team perhaps?

Jun-20-13  pinoymaster77: Latest news about SEAG is POC/PSC has ruled out sending teams specially if cannot assure GOLD, so volleyball and football are out, and have to reconfirm on basketball. Not sure if chess is regarded as a team sport, puede ring may individual entries.

Well, kung assured gold and hinahanap, Im afraid only Wes' inclusion would assure that, since Indonesia has GM Megaranto.

Jun-21-13  spawn2: For those who missed GM Eugenio "AFGM" Torre in Ms. Mel Tiangco's Powerhouse (Part 1).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezXS...

Jun-22-13  pinoymaster77: Hi spawn2,
Nice post on the youtube link, isa pang milestone in AFGM's legendary career!
Jun-22-13  pinoymaster77: Correction, may catch pa pala on SEAG participation, in the past POC/PSC has allowed 'have money, will travel' yun nga lang this time they're stricter for sports na may medal chances lang.

So, in that respect basketball could be given the green light yun nga lang unreasonable and overkill stance ni PSC Chairman Garcia for the Gilas team to represent the Philippines! Well, maybe send the Gilas cadet pool...

Wonder how they're viewing chess whether team o individual sport? Saka assessment of medal chances in case GM Wes cannot join? Could GMs Paragua,Barbosa,Antonio,Gomez,Laylo and possibly GM Sadorra hack it? Hope to get some word from Coaches AFGM Torre and Jayson. Maybe the forthcoming Asian Indoor Games could be a barometer...http://sports.inquirer.net/106165/u...
