EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jun-27-13  spawn2: <Asian Indoor Games 2013>

GM Eugene serving as coach will leave tomorrow for S. Korea together with the rest of Team Philippines to participate in the Asian Indoor Games.

<GRANDMASTERS Oliver Barbosa, Mark Paragua and John Paul Gomez expressed readiness and confidence that they will have better results in the upcoming Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) from June 29 to July 6 in Incheon, Korea.

"It's a prestigious tournament kaya medyo excited ako. I'll do my best to win and bring honors to our country," said Paragua, wound up with 6.5 points and finished tied for second to 6th places along Barbosa in the $100,000 Manny Pacquiao Asian Continental Chess Championships was held at the Midas Hotel and Casino in Pasay City last month.

"We are facing a very tough field.Let's just hope that we can all perform well," added Paragua, also the winner of the 2012 National Open Chess Championships dubbed as Battle of the Grandmasters held at the Cabagnot Training Center in Old Buswang, Kalibo Aklan last July.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president and chairman Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. and secretary-general Cavite 7th district Rep. Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. tapped Asia's first GM Eugene Torre and NCFP executive director GM Jayson Gonzales to be the coaches of the Philippine Team that includes Woman International Masters Catherine Perena, Bernadette Galas and WIM elect Janelle Mae Frayna.

Delegation Head is NCFP deputy secretary-general Red Dumuk. Paragua and Barbosa will join compatriot GM Wesley So in the 2013 World Chess Cup in Tromso, Norway from August 10 to September 5. So is fresh from winning National Open Championship dubbed as Las Vegas International Chess Festival 2013 held at the Riviera Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA last weekend.-Marlon Bernardino->

Jun-27-13  pinoymaster77: All the best to the Phil team to the Asian Indoor Games, tried to search pero eto lang makita from SCF pa but gives idea on the events. I think China and India also send some of their TOP GMs to this event, kaya tough talaga...

Jun-29-13  spawn2: GM Eugene Torre's legend continues to endure. Am constantly amazed that he continues to receive media interest 40 years after getting his GM title.

It only means that he has done really well in and outside of his chosen sport.

Plus getting interviewed by such beauty puts icing on the cake: )

Jun-29-13  epistle: Congratulations to Asia's First GM Eugenio "Eugene" O. Torre for having spent one whole hour with Carla "Fire in Her Eyes" Lizardo! And right there in his own house!

Jun-29-13  epistle: I've watched a lot of Eugene Torre interviews already and not once has he disclosed the true secret of his longevity: he eats nothing but fish and vegetables.

That is why practically all of his steak-eating contemporaries had either retired already or had been checkmated in this game called life.

Jun-29-13  wordfunph: from Chess Kingdom Philippines International Magazine..

<Torre remembered that there was once a book store in Doroteo Jose, Manila where his father would sacrifice a lot of money buying the books he need.>

"Doon sa pamimili ng libro yata nauubos ang suweldo ng tatay ko."

- GM Eugene Torre

Jun-29-13  pinoymaster77: Eto meron na sa chess-results.com, Le is top seed pero partner Ngoc eh wala sa field. Ranked 4th & 6th sila GMs Oliver & Mark. China has fielded the deadly pair of Ding Liren and Yu Yangyi (gulp!), walang entry ang India. Baka si GM Panjol eh sa mixed event ma-field.

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr105...

As per FB reply ni James Infiesto eh today nga daw start and all games will be live, pero di ko pa alam ano ang link...

Jun-29-13  pinoymaster77: Sa Womens, eh China went all out fielding ex-world champ GMs Hou Yifan and Zhao Xue, while Qatar has GM Zhu Chen, ubosh tayo dyan.

Our WIMs Catherine Perena and Janelle Frayna can just do their best and have this as exposure/honing tournament and gain ELO specially for Frayna who needs to get to minimum ELO for WIM title...http://www.chess-results.com/tnr105...

The Coaching stint will also give AFGM the insights how much more wider our gap is in terms of playing strength in the Womens category. Perena is seeded 15th while Frayna is 19th.

Jun-30-13  spawn2: Next month na World Cup. Am guessing na after this tournament eh maghihibernate na GMs Oli and Macmac to polish their preparation. Hopefully NFCP has prepared the required logistics for their prep. I remember Mr Rolly Sol Cruz of Meralco Chess Club extended assistance to GM Wes and GM Mac by arranging for the venue somewhere in Antipolo. GM Eugene acted as coach. Sana maulit uli with more support from NCFP.
Jun-30-13  pinoymaster77: Was still trying to search for link to livegames, and had idea to check the ACF site but when I clicked the 'livegames' eh it still defaults to the chess-results.com site.

In the meantime, chanced upon the following Asian chess news on the possibility of the inclusion of chess in the 2014 Asian Games on a more limited scope (rapid and blitz spread over 3 days only).

Jul-01-13  evlozare: <pinoymaster> link to asian indoor & martial arts games -

http://www.aimag2013.org/en

cheers!

Jul-01-13  pinoymaster77: Thanks evlozare!

metrolirot & vonvon also posted this link in FB : http://livegames.fide.com/incheon20...

And eto able to watch the opening moves of our GMs Paragua and Barbosa...

After 3 rounds, WIM-Elect Frayna has 2.5pts while WIM Perena and GMs Barbosa & Paragua have 2pts.

Jul-02-13  pinoymaster77: Not good round 4 with only GM Oli winning.

Sa ongoing rd5 game, Le has 2 rooks vs Oli's 3 minor pieces, Oli has an extra pawn...

Jul-03-13  pinoymaster77: In round 6 livegames just this am, only the games of GM Mac and WIM-Elect Frayna were covered being in the upper boards and both won! Mac now has 4/6 while Frayna has good 4.5/6 pace.

They will be up against top contenders in the final 7th round.

In contrast, Mac has faced only 1 GM so far in Mega (draw) and had a loss to Indon IM Syah Farid Firman 2396.

On the other hand, Frayna's blemish was a loss to Indon WGM Sukandar & a draw vs Iranian WIM Sarasadat 2315. The 4 wins were over unrated Ahmed Nihaya, Mongolian WFM Lkhamsuren 2104, Sporean WIM Liu Yang 2059 and in round 6 vs Kazakh WIM Madina 2260, so most probably it is net ELO gain for her to get her over the 2100 level, still a long way to go, I think its 2300 level reqt for the WIM title?

Jul-03-13  pinoymaster77: Walandyo sa pader pala napatapat WIM-Elect Frayna vs Ex-world champ Hou Yifan, so as expected yung result, she finished with 4.5 pts good for 7th, pasok sa top 10. Pero barometer din yan as Frayna is a case of having the best possible support in PHI for a woman player, being the star player and protege of FEU, and also having full backup of NCFP.

GM Mac settled for a final round draw vs Qatari GM Al Ahmed to also finish with 4.5 pts, but at 12th place after tiebreak.

UAE veteran GM Salem Saleh spoiled the Chinese party by ambushing GM Ding Liren in the final round to finish 2nd (silver) behind champ Yu Yangyi, Ding was 3rd. In the Womens it was 1-2 finish by GMs Hou and Xue.

Jul-03-13  joeyj: ^^^ I do have update on Frayna's Live rating !

Janelle Mae Frayna

Jul-03-13  pinoymaster77: Today and tomorrow na pala rapids, rd1 at 4pm Korea time and mixed format :

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr105...

http://www.aimag2013.org/en/schedul...

Jul-04-13  pinoymaster77: Sa rapids, in rd3 this am PHI won over Iran 2.5-1.5 anchored on wins by GMs Barbosa and Paragua.

For rd4, top board showdown with Vietnam, while China faces Qatar. So far in livegames, Ngoc won over Mac already and IM Pham over WIM Galas, while WIM-Elect Frayna held draw at board4. GM Oli vs GM Le still raging, opposite colored bishops na, mukhang drawish na, we will go down 1-3 in the match...

Jul-05-13  pinoymaster77: Is this the battle for Asian chess supremacy ?

Round 5 on 2013/07/07 at 12:20
Bo. 2 Vietnam Rtg - 1 China Rtg 0 : 0
1.1 GM Le, Quang Liem 2729 - GM Ding, Liren 2702

1.2 GM Nguyen, Ngoc Truong Son 2637 - GM Yu, Yangyi 2675

1.3 IM Pham, Le Thao Nguyen 2397 - GM Hou, Yifan 2597

1.4 WGM Hoang, Thi Bao Tram 2268 - WGM Guo, Qi 2418

Jul-05-13  321ycnay: I think GM Barbosa's live rating has breached 2600 at 2603. JoeyJ can authenticate this one hehehe. His present 2569 plus his three wins against avg 2550 GMs and a draw with 2700+ Le Quang Liem for a total of 34 additional ELO rating.
Jul-05-13  joeyj: ^^^ Yes <GM Barbosa Live Rating in the Rapid is 2603>.

He gained a +34.0 in the 4th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games 2013 Rapid mixed team - Preliminary scoring 3.5/4 and an Rp:2943. His FIDE July rating in Rapid is 2569.
