EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-05-13  pinoymaster77: Oh ok, 2603 Rapid rating, sana kung may World Rapid Championships, GM Oli gets an invite.

On the rapids in Asian Indoors, format pala top 4 advance to the Semis, but unfortunately we got stalled with 2-2 draw with Independent OC in rd5 and missed the cut, PHI shown as 6th.

Today is final shot at glory through the blitz events.

Jul-05-13  joeyj: Sayang nga si Wesley, he should have participated in World Blitz 2012 & 2013 kong na invite sana. He is more stronger in Blitz than Le, the 2013 World Champion in Blitz !

In 2011 World Blitz Qualifying Tournament, So placed 5th and qualified to the 2011 World Blitz Chess Championship that was never held. Grischuk (World Blitz Champion 2012) placed 8th & Le (World Blitz Champion 2013) placed 17th in that 2011 World Blitz Qualifier. Tinalo pa ni Wes si Le & had drawn with Grischuk.

Hope Coach Susan had read my comment (p 5483) on this regard so they could plan & prepare for 2014 ! Wesley So

Wesley do have greater chances to be World Champion in Blitz much earlier than Standard coz the championship is held yearly. All he need is to get the invite @ qualify! Coach Susan could work for the invite for sure !

Suggest BW & GETS to work-out for the awareness & support on this "Project: GM Wesley So (PHI) World Blitz Champion". AFGM could be the Project Manager & Spokesman under the auspices of AFGM ETCF !!!

Jul-06-13  pinoymaster77: Mukhang ZERO medals tayo sa Asian Indoors. Lost badly to Viets in rd3 of the blitz with GM Mac securing a draw, then sufferring a SHUTOUT to the Chinese in round 5 to miss the Semis again !

Well, its still indicative of where we are sa Asian chess.

We have to note also some resurgence in East Asian / Russian states like the Iranians, Mongolians, Uzbeks as per recent Asian chess events like the Asian Youth and Asian Indoor.

Jul-06-13  pinoymaster77: Maybe at this stage with GM Wes being North America-based, he is in a different world and level, as well as new main influences. So maybe as part of 2014 goal setting, it us up to that camp to set it and if ever needing some help aside from the local chess authorities (PSC/NCFP), then they can communicate. Regge and Alex are part of ETCF core in case that channel would be needed later.
Jul-08-13  pinoymaster77: Buenviaje to the Philippine team on the way back. Maybe most probably it is Aseana (or meron bang PAL?) kaya some team members have FB messages on some reservations on the trip?

Anyway, coming back eh some days rest then maybe after that we can start inquiring or watch out for news on who are Philippine participants to the 'China vs ASEAN' event calendared July 14-21 in Kumming, China, and this Pre-SEA event in Myanmar July 29 - Aug 5, as per NCFP's calendar.

Seems after the Pacman Cup eh 'local action' has tapered off, and its the NCAA wars and NCC / BOGM that would be the next watchouts...

Jul-08-13  spawn2: Team Philippines arrived via PAL at around 2am this morning.

Next event for Pinoys to follow is GM Wes' campaign in Kazan to be followed by the WCC where our three amigos (Wes, Oli and Mac) will fight for fame and money.

Jul-09-13  spawn2: Came across this video in youtube. Galing ng coverage and venue. Will ask GM Eugene about it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnTT...

Enjoy watching!

Jul-09-13  wordfunph: <spawn2> nice vid! thank you.

Mapua's pride --- GM Eugenio Torre!

Jul-09-13  pinoymaster77: Nice video, kay Chino Trinidad naman so far 3 na yata silang Kapuso nag-segment kay AFGM...

Meron pala sa Pinas nung giant chess board & clock! Wer yun, mga Pards?

Jul-10-13  geniokov: Thanks for sharing that coverage Alex! Galing ng video coverage.I think na familiar ako sa place na yan which i saw it before? Sa Marikina ba yan kuha? Sa place ng nagngangalang Rudy?(Chess Arbiter or Trainer?)I´m not sure but salamat ulit brod!
Jul-10-13  geniokov: That Giant Chess was the one i propose for modernization of chess plaza in Luneta aside from chess tables.Napakaganda sana and it will encourage younger generations to develop their interest in chess.
Jul-10-13  spawn2: <pm77>

Tama is <geniokov>. The shoot was done somewhere in Marikina. The owner's name is Mr. Jun Dionisio who is a friend of GM Torre and a chess enthusiast like us. He owns a restaurant and a bakery which exhibit some chess motif.

I also remember Regge and Dari mentioning before that they met a chess collector in Marikina and it looks like it was also Mr. Jun Dionisio

I remember

Jul-10-13  pinoymaster77: Hello spawn2 / genio,

Thanks for that info, sayang di pala open to the public...

Nakow pag sa Luneta nagkaroon ng ganun eh dapat naka-chain yung pieces to the ground para di maiuwi. Baka nga pati yung board kung puedeng makarga eh merong mag-uwi ahehe.

Di naman lahat pero paminsan-minsan nakakadalaw sa Manila U-belt and kita pa din ang diaspora dun, mga high rise condos and malls/supermarkets then in the surroundings mga padyak boys and 'Manila locators' na walang land titles.

Wala pa talagang inclusive growth kahit ano sabihin ng Malacanang, will still take decades of continued positive growth (6 to 7% growth pace is ok para di mag overheat o develop a bubble bursting)

Jul-12-13  geniokov: Sa tutoo lang, magandang negosyo yang giant chess, aside from it,promotion din ito sa buong bansa. What i mean is to create a business by including it as a part of every Town or City plaza in their Amusement park.It can also be a part of every subdivision or residences or even in your own private ground. All you need is 64 big tiles,a sort of big "treasure box" or "baul" in a form of Chessclock para kaakit-akit tingnan at pwedeng taguan ng giant chesspieces when it still not in use.And of course,a giant Chesspieces na pwede mong ma-order from China na makukuha sa murang halaga!
Na-get mo yung idea bro?
Jul-15-13  pinoymaster77: Di ko masyado ma-visualize, Genio, may sample pic ka ba ng 'treasure box'?
Jul-15-13  geniokov: Wala akong pics bro but the idea is like this,Imagine that Chess sets including Analog chessclocks are giant, then yung top side ng Clock eh nabubuksan.Imagine a giant Chessclock with a measurement of 150-160 cm length x 100 cm width and a height of 80cm.Actually at the frontside ng Chessclock eh may design lang na Chessclock! Get mo na bro?
Jul-16-13  pinoymaster77: Ok genio,
Got the concept better with your descriptions.
Jul-18-13  pinoymaster77: As we are waiting for July end, malalapit na din mga possible 'campaigns' ni AFGM :

- In Sept yung BOGM, venue still to be announced. Still to look out for the Rules and Regulations to be published, if these are also qualifiers.

- In Oct choice between Indonesian Open and the Asian Intercities, my gutfeel is maybe go Indonesia.

- By Dec, if chess is indeed in the SEAG Calendar, AFGM will probably be a Coach there.

In between his duties with Fianchetto,ETCF and public invites would take up most of his skeds...

Jul-19-13  spawn2: There is also the World Seniors pards but not sure if it's part of his plan this year.

Construction of the Fianchetto Building that will house the Eugene Torre Chess Center has started. Malalimlalim na rin yata nahuhukay for the foundation. Really excited to see that building rise.

Weekly trainings for the youths, tournaments and kitakits will happen in the Center. The Foundation can also hold a pay-per-view activity for important tournaments with in-house Master to do commentaries. One way of bringing chess lovers in one place.

Jul-19-13  rusticbull: <Weekly trainings for the youths, tournaments and kitakits will happen in the Center. The Foundation can also hold a pay-per-view activity for important tournaments with in-house Master to do commentaries. One way of bringing chess lovers in one place.>

hmnnnn . . . looks promising!!

can we hold our BW kita-kits there? even hold a mini-tournament?

Jul-19-13  pinoymaster77: "The Foundation can also hold a pay-per-view activity for important tournaments with in-house Master to do commentaries. One way of bringing chess lovers in one place."

Nice idea, parang yung ginawa sa London Chess Classic?

Some ideas :

- Ganapin yung matagal nang nabantulot na BW/GETS vs Don Galo Part 3 sa ETCC !

- Yung sinasabi ni Regge na closed tournament for Executives, then invite some IMs or even some GMs for rated tournament.

- Executive TEAM chess matchups - example : Pacman & Friends vs BW/GETS, i-define lang sino-sino mga eligible players para di puro hugutan ahehe...

- Regge vs Iggy Dee match (think both are good, galing din analyze Iggy) Dari vs sheriff or nano...

- Dari's studes vs Kots Carags developmental students...

- Alekhine Nouri vs Concio Jr or Quizon chess match / fundraiser...

Jul-22-13  spawn2: <rusticbull>

<can we hold our BW kita-kits there? even hold a mini-tournament?>

Am sure the people behind the Foundation will welcome such activity. It is one way of raising funds which can be used to support its programs.

Definitely, ETCF will try to make the Center the Mecca of Chess in the Philippines (at least in Metro Manila) with various activities year round. ETCF is looking forward to the support of all chess loving Filipinos. To borrow Pres Noy's SONA message "SONA nyo to", once the Chess Center is up and running, "Chess Center nyo to".
