EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-27-13  pinoymaster77: Indonesian delegation made some heads turn in the recent Biel festival. Their touted womens star 16-yr old Warda Aulia Medina who ambushed a Russian GM, projected to be WGM Sukandar's successor, so soon...

AFGM's pal GM Utut (still Senator?) also saw action after awhile...

http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/201...

Jul-28-13  spawn2: Hmm Sen Adianto playing..baka in prep for a tourney before 2013.
Jul-29-13  pinoymaster77: Posible kaya that Sen/GM Utut is considering to play for his country again in the Olympiad? Over the years kasi wala nang ibang pang SuperGM caliber na makasama si Mega?

Kung magkaganun aba eh sana or dapat lang magkita pa sila sa 2014 Olympiad?

Ahehe, baka too advanced thinking naman I guess AFGM can ask during the Indonesia Open coming soon, around Oct...

Jul-29-13  geniokov: Why not AFGM and Sen.Utut Adianto arrange an exhibition match between "China vs ASEAN" any ideas? Maybe bro.spawn can mention this to AFGM!
Jul-29-13  geniokov: The powerhouse of China like Wang Hue,Wang Hao,Ding Liren etc will be match up against our ASEAN Pride like Wesley So, Le Quang Liem,GM Ngoc Truong Son,Zang zhung of Singapore,Megaranto etc! Things are all pattern to "USSR vs ROW". The difference is that they will play including rapid and blitz matches aside from 4 standard games. AFGM surely knows about this.
Jul-29-13  geniokov: Each teams consist of 10 or 12 players! Magandang promotion din ito.
Jul-29-13  spawn2: <geniokov>

There was an Indonesia vs ROW sometime late 90's. It was part of the preparation of GM Utut Adianto for the World Cup.

I will need to get my copy of B. Ang's Inside Philippine Chess Book 1 to give the membersd of both teams.

Jul-29-13  pinoymaster77: Kagagawa lang nitong 'China vs ASEAN' for youth hosted in China I think just last week, Alekhine Nouri got a bronze medal as posted in his CG page.

Well, then since China is receptive to this set-up of a match, eh why not apply to their TOP adult Masters.

Pero kung 10 players baka kulangin ang ASEAN ng top caliber player na makakasabay, maybe 5 players for ASEAN would be more realistic...

Jul-29-13  geniokov: This would be very interesting match "China vs ASEAN". Let me say that China will look stronger when it comes to ELO comparison but in reality,i think di ganun kadaling talunin ang ASEAN team. China's top players like GM Wang Yue,Wang Hao,Li Chao cannot easily make a point against GM Wesley So, Lie Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son. Pwedeng makapuntos sila sa lower board pero ubos din ang mga good reserves ng China.
Jul-29-13  geniokov: Kung "China vs ROA"(rest of Asia) malamang superior naman ang ROA dahil makakasama ang India with Sasikiran,Harikrishna,Gupta,Negi and some from former USSR like Filipov,And some from Turkmenistan,Kirgistan etc.
Aug-01-13  spawn2: Quote of the Day

"Something Bobby once told me: "Winning feels like you're sucking blood from the other guy's neck!" As if sharing a ghoulish secret, he asked if I felt the same way. I said no.

--- Larry Evans

Cant help but smile after reading this.

Aug-01-13  pinoymaster77: I guess walang pinadala NCFP dito? Wala sa news....

PRE-SEA Games Chess Tournament 2013 July 29-Aug. 5, 2013 Zebuthiri Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar

Aug-06-13  allan.dinglasan: <Spawn>, Oleg Romanishin - Eugenio Torre. Brussel Swift, 1986- 121 moves, 1/2-1/2 Was this the longest game played by GM Torre?
Aug-06-13  spawn2: <allan d>

it seems his game against GM Romanishin is the longest. The famous Torre vs Polugaevsky Knight endgame in Toluca reached 100 moves. Another game with GM Bali in their Match (not sure whether it was in the first or second) reached almost 100 moves.

Aug-07-13  pinoymaster77: Yung mga recent endgames panalo ni AFGM sa Asian Games & Olympiads parang di naman umabot ng 100 moves ano? Meron yata over 80moves...

Maybe after his 'retirement' we can actually see an endgame chessbook sana from AFGM?

Aug-09-13  spawn2: BOGM is still a month away. Hopefully GM Torre can squeeze some training in his very hectic sched. New sets of qualifiers from the Semi will test the skills of our GMs.
Aug-10-13  spawn2: Gilas Pilipinas showed what a fighting heart can do. Hope our three (3) chess warriors (So, Barbosa, Paragua) in Tromso, Norway got inspired with the win and play the best chess they can dish out starting tomorrow.

Laban Pinas..Puso!!

Aug-11-13  allan.dinglasan: <Spawn2>
Thanks and I am looking forward for another good run of GM Torre this upcoming BOGM!
Aug-11-13  pinoymaster77: President PNoy's statement draws inspiration from the Gilas feat and encourages Pinoys to EXCEL, from GM Wes in the World Cup, to our Pinoys in Malaysia, for the next 2014 Olympiad, in our work and forthcoming projects of the ETCF ! “Gilas Pilipinas has shown the world that no one can outsize the heart of the Filipino. May their performance inspire every Filipino to relentlessly pursue excellence, no matter what field they find themselves in, so that, together, we may fulfill our shared aspiration of a Philippine nation greater than ever before.”

Aug-14-13  Deadlost: world senior championship in November this year.Wish GM Torre joins - he can win it....
Aug-14-13  spawn2: <Deadlost>

I believe GM Eugene has his eye on the coming BOGM this September and the Indonesian Open come October. Hopefully his schedule permits that he plays in the World Seniors.

Aug-14-13  pinoymaster77: vonvon's post in FB,a welcome development

Executive chess relaunched

GM Eugene Torre and NM Sammy Estimo will revive the executive chess tournament which they organized five years ago by staging a new series at the air- conditioned Dug Out sports bar of Rey Bancod, the former Philippine Sportswriters Association president, at the One Joroma Place, Congressional Ave., cor San Beda St., Brgy. Bahay Toro, Quezon City ( in front of Gerry’s Grill and above David’s Saloon). This is in response to the clamor of chess executives who wish to play with their peers in friendly competition on a regular basis. Confirmed participants are lawyers Joe Aspiras, Quirino Sagario, Roy Hirang, Jr., Joselito Oliveros, Doming Bornasal, Rommel Tacorda, Justice Romy de la Cruz, Dr. Cip Oviedo , businessmen Lorenz Tabilog ,Noel Garcia and Leo Ricana, commercial pilot Tony Labarda and SSS executive Rene Domaycos. For more information and details, interested participants can get in touch with GM Eugene Torre at celphone no. 09228822870 or lawyer Sammy Estimo at no. 09159360354.

Aug-15-13  spawn2: <pm77>

Looking at the participants, medyo malakas ang field ng Executive Tourney sa 24. Mapapalaban si nanobrain and atty roy.

Although I would like to join just to be with chess friends and to meet new friends, me conflict sa sched. Hopefully sa next run I can join and experience getting massacred over the chess board: )

For tonight's game if GM Wes opens with e4, am expecting to see a long struggle in the Ruy Lopez.

Go for the win GM Wes!

Aug-15-13  pinoymaster77: Hi spawn2,

Noted the initial feeling out for the Exec chess revival. Sana may makasama pa sila Atty's nano and Roy, saka matuloy si Dennis. Sana si puling masamahan sila...

Aug-15-13  spawn2: The journey for GM Wes does not end with the World Cup. There is still the World Juniors to aspire for.

Hope he participates and give it his best shot to get the belt that has eluded the best Filipino chess warriors.
