EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Aug-18-13  pinoymaster77: Just can't help it, I cannot access the 2012 Chess Olympiad to verify China's line-up, but anyway with the 2 Wangs,Li Chao, Ding Liren and Bu eh SOLID na nga sila. Tapos pag mahinog o ready na Wei Yi as early as next year, and he struts '2700 playing strength', eh maybe China can give stiffer challenge being head-to-head with powerhouses like Armenia,Russia and Ukraine.

Definitely, they will be a notch up na vs the likes of Hungary, Israel and even Vietnam.

Now where does that leave the Philippines? I think we may even have a hard time securing that half point from hereon, our past clashes in the Olympiad and Asian Games were 0.5-3.5 losses.

I wonder if China will field teams in the Asian Intercities to be hosted at Tagaytay I think in Oct.

Aug-19-13  spawn2: A "contemporary" of GM Torre doing very well in the on-going World Cup, his name Grandmaster Granda Zuniga.
Aug-19-13  pinoymaster77: Taga Peru pala GM Granda Zuniga, di Spain... he just upended GM Giri, recovering from a lost 'won' game in their first standard game!
Aug-22-13  pinoymaster77: Na 2-0 ni Fabiano si GM Granda, medyo nagwala na Granda kagabi, go for broke!

Having a MAGNIFICENT run is GM Gata Kamsky na may FANTASTIC match vs GM Mamedyarov, a fine attacking game in their first game which IM Trent hailed as 'the attack of the tournament', and last night's game 2 was slambang and suspenseful!

Another surprise is Ukrainian GM Anton Korobov, as he punished GM Nakamura's opening transgressions! He's a FUNNY guy pala, watch his video interview via livestream last night, after his match victory, he next faces GM Kramnik!

Aug-22-13  spawn2: <pm77>

as promised, I dusted off my Chess Asia Vol 17 No. 4 to check some historical tidbits on the 2004 Asian Cities Chess held in Tagaytay (2004).

Final ranking (Top 5):

1st - Tagaytay (Phi) 25.0
2nd - Guangzhou (Chn) 25.0
3rd - Mandaluyong City (Phi)22.5
4th - Pasay City (Phi) 22.5
5th - Pavlodar (Kaz) 22.5

Champion Tagaytay City was headed by GM Eugene Torre on Board 1. Below are the other team members:

Bd 2 - GM Joey Antonio
Bd 3 - GM Bong Villamayor
Bd 4 - IM Ronald Dableo
Bd 5 - IM Jayson Gonzales

Tagaytay Team ended a 25 year dry spell that started in Hongkong way back in 1979.

Aug-23-13  pinoymaster77: Hi spawn2,
Ok, that was as recent as 2004,back then they had 3 GMs in the Tagaytay team...

The Tolentinos still handle Tagaytay and they have the means to get together a competitive team.

Hope din na tama dinig ko earlier that 1 of the 5 PHI teams would be Youth (Juniors) flavored, chance na din makalaro at that level while hosted here...

BUSINESSMAN Ricardo Martin settled for a draw against sportswriter and radio commentator Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. after 30 moves of King's Indian Defense in the sixth and final round to rule the just concluded Executive chess circuit at the Dugout Sports Bar and Grill on Saturday at One Joroma Place, Congressional Ave., corner San Beda St., Barangay Toro in Quezon City.

Martin posted a final tally of 5.0 points with four wins and two draw after six rounds of play to claim the inauguration Dugout Sports Executive chess circuit title organized by Asia's First Grandmaster Eugene Torre and National Master Samuel Estimo and officiated by International Arbiter Erwin Carag and National Arbiter Alex Dinoy.

Actually, the Bicol province bet Martin took the title due to higher tie break points against fellow five pointers Bureau International Revenue (BIR) employee Philip King Cartagena.

The former University of Sto. Tomas (UST) mainstay Cartagena, 2013 Bureau International Revenue Blitz chess champion, defeated Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) employee Joselito Dormitorio after 50 moves of Modern Benoni Defense.

Martin received elegant trophy, P3,500 and a chess for his effort while Cartagena pocketed P3,500 and a chess set.

Bernardino, on the other hand, finished in a two-way tie for third place with fellow 4.5 pointers lawyer Quirino Sagario, who brought downed businessman Kirk Jeremias after 45 moves of Queen's Pawn Game. Bernardino and Sagario split the combined prize of P1,500 with the former (Bernardino) went home a chess set prize.

Meanwhile, before the awarding ceremony, the organizing committee had raffle prizes to give away. For more information about the future Executive chess circuit tournament , interested participants can get in touch with GM Torre at 09228822870 or lawyer Estimo at 09159360354.

Sep-01-13  spawn2: It seems GM Eugene's next tournament will be the Indon Open this October since there is no formal announcement yet on what is the final schedule of the Battle of the GMs.
Sep-01-13  Nf3em: Aba magandang balita yan bro <alex>, GM Short will also join the Indon Open in October. He did mention it while answering tweets from chess fans during the 2nd game of Kramnik-Andreikin WCC 2013 finals last night.
Sep-01-13  bubuli55: Tabanus: This is off-topic for this page but I post it here so that many will read it. I'm trying to make <CG> tournament pages out of Game Collection: Manila 1973 (15 rounds played ca. 16 Oct. - 6 Nov. 1973) and Game Collection: Bauang 1973 (9 rounds played ca. 9-20 Nov. 1973). I have the round numbers and pairings, BUT

I miss exact dates of the rounds. Would anyone by chance have access to these? Or where can they be found? I know that the tournaments (or at least the first one) was sent directly every day on Philippine TV. And possibly there were reports in Manila Times or other newspapers.

Other info is also welcome. Contributors will be acknowledged on the tournament page. Please reply in my forum or in the Biographer Bistro.

Sep-02-13  spawn2: With $100,000 prize money and a $20,000 pot for the Champion, lots of strong GMs will fly to Indonesia to try to get the prize. Who knows, GM Utut "The Senator" Adianto might come out of retirement not only for the money but for the glory of being called Champ. GM Nigel Short will definitely be one of the favorites.
Sep-02-13  pinoymaster77: Yup with such prize pot eh madami sigurong Asian young guns din pupunta dyan, baka pato Georgians and even some Armenians baka mapadpad diyan...

I was checking chess-results.com pero wala pang early entry duon for the tournament. Dun sa tournament site na trying to find, wala pang participants list.

Sep-02-13  lakers4sho: When does it start?
Sep-02-13  spawn2: Its going to run from October 9 to 17 if I remember the dates correctly.

1 more month of preparation for those who will join.
