EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Oct-02-13  spawn2: Will try to drop by the venue this afternoon and will check the scoring system currently being used.
Oct-02-13  pinoymaster77: Ok, based on spawn2's sms confirmation, now it is 1.5 pts for 'normal' draw. For stalemate, the player who initiated the stalemate gets 2 pts while his opponent gets 1 pt, so based on this eh ff : GM JP Gomez 13.5 pts 4 wins 1draw
GM Antonio 10.5 pts 2 wins 3 draws
GM Bitoon 9pts 3 wins
IM Pimentel 9 pts 2 wins 2 draws
GM Barcenilla 9 pts 1 win 4 draws
GM Barbosa 9 pts 1win 4draws
GM Laylo 7 pts 1win 2draws 1stalemate
GM Torre 6 pts 4 draws
FM Nava 6 pts 4 draws
GM Paragua 5 pts 1 stalemate 2draws

Having incomplete results pa for all 5 rounds for FM Habla and IM Senador NM Reyes IM Salcedo...

Oct-02-13  spawn2: Good morning,

FM Habla and IM Salcedo had a drawn game while IM Senador lost to GM Barbosa. NM Reyes and GM Torre's game was a draw.

Today and tomorrow will have 2 games. 8 rounds to go and a lot of things can happen.

Frayna grabs solo lead in 2013 Battle of the Grandmaster Chess Championships; Gomez stay on top after a draw

JANELLE MAE FRAYNA battled Jean Karen Enriquez to a draw after 79 moves of English Opening to assume solo lead after the fifth round of the 2013 Battle of the Grandmaster Chess Championships late Wednesday at the Philippine Sports Commission Conference Room, Administration Bldg., Vito Cruz, Manila.

Her overnight co-leader Woman International Master Beverly Mendoza failed to keep pace after losing to WIM Bernadette Galas after 38 moves of French defense.

"Talagang tabla po ang laban," said Frayna who hails from Legaspi City, Albay.

Frayna improved to 13.5 points while Mendoza was stuck at 12.0 points.

The event is using the Torre-Pichay scoring system, a method formulated by Torre and National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president/chairman Prospero "Butch" Pichay, Jr. where a win is equivalent to three points, a draw is 1.5 points, a loss is zero, and a stalemate is 2.0 for the last player to make a move and 1.0 to the player who can no longer make a move.

Last year's champion WIM Catherine Perena outclassed WFM Jedara Docena, Lucelle Bermundo subdued Ynna Sophia Canape, WFM Rulp Ylem Jose smashed Villa Mae Cabrera, Arvie Lozano crushed Gladys Hazelle Romero while WFM Cherry Ann Mejia split the point with WFM Shania Mae Mendoza in other results.

The tournament is being organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), headed by chairman/president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. and secretary-general Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino Jr., and supported by the Philippine Sports Commisison (PSC), headed by chairman Ricardo "Richie" Garcia and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), at the helm is president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco.

NCFP executive director GM Jayson Gonzales is the tournament director, while IA Gene Poliarco is the chief arbiter.

In the men's play, GM John Paul Gomez drew with 12-time national open champion GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. after 21 moves of Caro-Kann defense to remain on top with 13.5 points.

" Ok lamang ang draw para maipreserba natin ang ating lakas sa mga next crucial round. Mahaba pa naman eh," said GM Gomez.

Antonio, on the other hand, stayed in second place with 10.5 points on two wins and three draws.

GM Richard Bitoon, meantime beat defending champion GM Mark Paragua after 37 moves of Sicilian defense to raised his score to nine points on three wins and two losses.

" Draw lamang sana ang laban kaso nagkamali siya eh," said the Medellin, Cebu ace Bitoon.

"Na mental black ako, di ko napansin na mamamate ako. Nakatutok kasi ako na matehin din siya." said the Tondo, Manila born Paragua.

Also with nine points were US based GM Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla, GM Oliver Barbosa and IM Joel Pimentel.

Barcenilla halved the point with Pimentel after 84 moves of Queen's Gambit Accepted while Barbosa defeated IM Emmanuel Senador after 64 moves of Queen's Pawn Game.

The game between FM Jony Habla and IM Richilieu Salcedo III , GM Eugene Torre against National Master Narquinden Reyes and FM Roderick Nava opposite GM Darwin Laylo ended into a fighting draw.

Oct-02-13  Pulo y Gata: <"Na mental black ako, di ko napansin na mamamate ako. Nakatutok kasi ako na matehin din siya." said the Tondo, Manila born Paragua.>

The hardest thing that could ever happen to a chess player: mental black.

Oct-02-13  pinoymaster77: May typo siguro dun - mental block. Na block yung trail of thoughts siguro, napa-focus sa opensa, nakaligtaan ang depensa.

Ganun din sa TEAM sports...

Oct-02-13  SugarDom: Pwede din yun, nagdilim ang kanyang isipan. hehe
Oct-02-13  Pulo y Gata: It's the writer's, not the player's, fault.
Oct-02-13  Pulo y Gata: On the other hand, I had a good laugh when a friend related that he once promised his daughters food after he spent a day of chess with friends. What he texted?

Chessburgers.

Oct-02-13  pinoymaster77: Meron na finally sa NCFP site !! Pero tinuos ko points ni IM Pimentel, checking the round-by-round results, it should really be 9pts (not 7.5) from 2 wins and 2 draws... http://www.ncf-phil.org/archives/20...
Oct-03-13  pinoymaster77: After rd6, GM Gomez 16.5pts GM Antonio 13.5 GM Barbosa & IM Pimentel 12pts IM Senador 10.5 GM Laylo 10

Since usually FIDE rated ang BOGM can IMs earn GM norms here?

Oct-03-13  wordfunph: nakaka-mental black nga yong banat ni Marlon.

go GM Joey and El Eugenio!

Oct-03-13  pinoymaster77: Perdoneme, but this is also for sports youth. Congratulations to the PHI U16 team, they earlier beat host Iran in the quarterfinals to arrange Semis duel vs Taipei which they just won yesterday! So they are onto the finals vs 'powerhouse' China, but already qualified to the FIBA Worlds U16, I think for the first time!

Naibawi na nila Gilas kuyas vs Iran and Taipei, no idea on strength of China pero malamang may 7 footers pa din...

Oct-04-13  pinoymaster77: AFGM Torre drew with leader GM JP Gomez and had first win over FM Habla, relatively good day, he now has 12 pts from 1 win and 6 draws
Oct-04-13  spawn2: good morning pm77

Hope the trend continues and can be carried over to Indon Open and Asian Cities.

Oct-05-13  pinoymaster77: Oki oo nga, as per Nil Maglas' FB confirmation, round 10 today starts roughly at 2pm.

I told him marquee match-ups are GM Torre vs GM Paragua, GM Barcenilla vs GM Bitoon, GM Antonio vs GM Laylo.

Of course the results for GM Gomez (vs FM Habla) and GM Barbosa (vs IM Pimentel) will also be looked out for, to assess the standings at the TOP.

Oct-05-13  kardopov: Is today's round the final one? Who emerges the champion?
Oct-05-13  kardopov: Oops, 13 rounder pala ito
Oct-05-13  pinoymaster77: Round 10 today, then I think 2 rounds bukas rounds 11 and 12 then final round on Mon/Oct 7th then awarding.
Oct-05-13  pinoymaster77: Draw AFGM vs GM Mac, mga 13.5 pts na.

GM JP won over FM Habla, much needed cushion vs the chasers, gets him to 25.5pts. No word yet on the game of GM Barbosa. GM Joey vs GM Laylo was quick draw, maintains 3rd & 4th placings.

Oct-06-13  spawn2: GM Eugene won against FM Nava in a Scandanavian. I remember reading a Bobby An article that GM Torre knows how to play againat the Center Counter.

Last round tomorrow against GM Laylo with black and off to Indonesia by Tuesday evening to play in the 3rd Indon Open

Oct-06-13  pinoymaster77: Congratulations AFGM, nice witnessing the game! Im not sure if GM Laylo would already like to rest, but I think he's just having a slim lead over gmjoey for 3rd place, in fact he just assumed it after his round 12 win tonight!

All the best in the final round tom am, and the trip to Indonesia on Tues.

Also glad to chat & see spawn2,dari,Marilin,Nil.

Oct-06-13  pinoymaster77: Meantime, at the Indonesia Open front (opening on Oct 9), youngest WGM na pala nila si Medina Warda Aulia, congratulations! Prodigy na inalagaan nila with trainings and continous overseas exposures! http://indonesiaopen.chessdom.com/2...
