EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Nov-06-13  pinoymaster77: Posted these in FB Ahedres group with true named members, 26 na nag like sa Bday greetings kay AFGM, some chess highlights shared with them :

Epitome of a sportsman/gentleman, nasa DepEd books din sya, sa Gr2 o Gr3...

Nung 2012 Olympiad, on the eve of their departure AFGM's beloved mother died. Yun nga lang pagbalik satin, walang ganung recognition o hoopla, but as a gentleman we'll never hear complaint in public...

Nov-06-13  bubuli55: I am confident Anand will win this match.
Nov-06-13  Deadlost: <epistle: <Deadlost...Guadalupe Complex is just too seedy for my taste and the players are the 24/7 types with probably sores on their butts from sitting too long.>

<Gibe> and <Pulsar> go there every day.>

No offense meant. I was just describing the ambience. I was there just once, 2-3 years ago checking it out after a team tournament in JP Rizal Makati. It was a couple of long tables near the toilet entrance, right?

The original toiletgate.

I've observed two blitzers playing like GMs in the opening - automatic moves in the KID, White attacks in the Qside, Black swarms with pawn pushes in the Kside.

Then play became expert level in the late middle game when stock moves were exhausted.

By endgame, play became Class B. But they were still consistently fast, no denying that.

If play's the thing, I guess Guada would do.

Nov-07-13  spawn2: Good day to everyone. GM Torre requested me to post this message:

"I would like to thank everyone for the birthday greetings. Chess supporters like you have kept the royal game vibrant and popular. We, chessplayers truly appreciate the support."

Eugene Torre

Nov-07-13  torrefan: Greetings only and no gifts! That's what I've been telling to birthday celebrants: they should always do a <pakanton>. Otherwise, all they will receive are greetings.

Next year, I am sure GM Torre will have a pakanton for his fans.

Nov-07-13  Deadlost: Wordfunph: I wanted to buy this book but was discouraged by a detailed review with negative comments such as poor editing, repeated phrases, etc.

My question is, if you have the book and went through it, is it worth having despite the flaws?

Thanks for whatever advice you'll give. I'll trust you on this. :)

Nov-08-13  spawn2: Per checking, the 1st game between GM Anand and GM Carlsen will start at 3:00 pm India time which is 5:30 pm Manila time.

Really excited to witness this historic event.

Nov-08-13  Nf3em: my heart belongs to Vishy but my chess bucks favors Magnus ...

tik tak tik tak tik tak ...

Nov-08-13  kardopov: <Well, I thought at least I could find some blitz opposition, but that too was tough as most of the players were either poor or unwilling to bet anything worthy. The only game I got was with a young kid and I'd have to give 5 to 1 time odds. After two games I knew it was too much odds. That kid turned out to be Eugene Torre, the future GM> Guess, Torre was no longer a kid when that blitz match happened. Only 2 yrs age difference between the two.
Nov-08-13  pinoymaster77: Heart is for Champ Anand, while mind says Magnus, let us see how Game 1 unfolds !

Sino kaya mga 'secret' seconds nila Magnus and Vishy ?

Nov-08-13  Nf3em: Less than 5 hours to go.

Ihanda na ang mani, sago-gulaman, popcorn, etc.

Nov-09-13  spawn2: <Nf3em>

It has finally started: ) Chessbomb went off-line, needed to renew my ICC membership just to be able to watch the first game: )

Nov-09-13  spawn2: watching the live feed via youtube..GM Anand looks good having slimmed down quite a bit.
Nov-09-13  spawn2: Personally, I want the game to go on but Anand may have been wise to go for the draw with black and not expending too much energy.

He can always go for a win tomorrow with white.

Nov-09-13  Nf3em: I'm happy to see one of my opening variations in the hands of Vishy. Although it went not as I like, it is likely that Vishy just wanted to play it safe and play energetically with the White pieces in Game 2.

Good luck to both!

Nov-09-13  pinoymaster77: Paki post ng live link for game 2 bukas,
by gametime na please...
Nov-09-13  spawn2: <pm77>

The youtube coverage is quite good pards. Will post it tomorrow.

Nov-09-13  Nf3em: I also got the official site's link. Will post it too tomorrow. ;-)
Nov-09-13  pinoymaster77: Ok na pards, may nag post nung youtube link ss FB, I was thinking kung may World Championship site to follow pag LIVE mode

Hope AFGMs Ilonggo kin are ok

Nov-09-13  pinoymaster77: Any other views, seems Champ Anand had hisway with black in game 1. 1 point in the psychological battle ?
Nov-10-13  spawn2: Definitely, rd 1 is some sort of a psychological victory for Anand. In their last meeting, Magnus was able to beat him in less than 30 moves. Even during the press conference after the game, you can see that Magnus was not happy with the short game

But there is still 11 rds..both players will have to take it one game at the time.

Nov-10-13  Nf3em: 1 & a half hours to go mga igan.
Nov-10-13  Nf3em: A pitcher of iced tea, potato chips and peanuts ready!
Nov-10-13  spawn2: e4 and c6 Carokann!
Nov-10-13  pinoymaster77: Aba korokan defense si Magnus ha, kanino kayang influence o prepa?
