EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Nov-27-13  Nf3em: kelan kaya ulit sasaya ang Wes page and magkaroon ulit ng online match ang BW-GETS ditto sa CG ... matagal tagal na rin yung huli ah! he he he di nga pala natapos yun.
Nov-27-13  pinoymaster77: Just read this am, all the best to our SEAG delegation, specially our chess contingent :

Nov-27-13  pinoymaster77: There you go, GMs Fressinet (tama si lakers4sho) and Nepo also helped out... http://www.authintmail.com/article/...
Nov-27-13  pinoymaster77: Plus a SPECIAL chess program done by Oslo firm Basefarm
Nov-27-13  pinoymaster77: Nf3em,

Naalala ko pa isang quote ng former GM ng employer 'the only thing certain in life is CHANGE'.

So, siguro mahirap na maibalik yung kainitan nung BW/GETS some years ago.

Pero life is dynamic, it can be in another form. May bubuli Cup daw next year, sometime April yata balak bumisita...

Nov-28-13  pinoymaster77: Dun sa on-going World Chess Team, eh with the new King Magnus ascending the throne eh watching with keen interest the TOP GUNs to have idea on their current shape and prospects.

So far for the matches of interest, Naka ambushed Vlad then lost last night to Levon. For the surveys for the Candiates 2014 by April, Levon and Vlad are leading. Though both seem to falter vs Magnus, its still their chance to shine come the Challengers 2014 for this batch :

V. Anand
L. Aronian
V. Kramnik
S. Karjakin
V. Topalov
S. Mamedyarov
P. Svidler
D. Andrekin

Nov-29-13  lakers4sho: if Aronian doesn't run out of gas like he did this year, he should be the frontrunner out of those guys.
Nov-30-13  Nf3em: <<pinoymaster77>: Nf3em,

Naalala ko pa isang quote ng former GM ng employer 'the only thing certain in life is CHANGE'.

So, siguro mahirap na maibalik yung kainitan nung BW/GETS some years ago

Pero life is dynamic, it can be in another form. May bubuli Cup daw next year, sometime April yata balak bumisita...> I hope that upcoming event will serve as a catalyst. Though I won't there (medyo conflict sa sched ko), I will support in some other way.

Yun nga lang may isang maabala para itira yung moves ko and punch the clock he he he ... ;-)

Nov-30-13  pinoymaster77: Ok Nf3em,
We'll check with Prez wordfun when the playdate / bubuli's visit dates are close by.
Nov-30-13  Nf3em: Thanks sir <pm77> ;-)
Nov-30-13  pinoymaster77: Kind of a mixed bag so far for perspective of Team USA in the ongoing WCTC, a BIG win over 'old rivals' Russia but falling to 'emerging rival' China (over Asa) plus a loss to Armenia. Ukraine is clear 1st with perfect match record so far. From China's viewpoint, 2 big wins over Armenia and USA back-to-back so far. Interesting to note that Armenia and USA fielded virtually their 2012 Olympiad line-ups, while China still have Wang Hao and also the fast rising, currently youngest GM Wei Yi, their 2014 Olympiad selection would be interesting.

http://wctc2013.tsf.org.tr/index.ph...

Dec-01-13  pinoymaster77: Ang bigat ng China, may 'magnificent 7' sila now na pool to get a competitive Olympiad squad, kayang kaya na sumabay with the heavyweights like Ukraine,Armenia,Russia.

Their 2012 Olympiad team if I recalled correctly was composed of the 2 Wangs, Li Chao, Ding and Bu and recalled it was also Ding who delivered the key game wins to clinch some critical matches, Bu also continues to be steady sa lower boards. Waiting in the wings pa Yu and Wei Yi.

On the other hand, India's prodigies stuck with Negi and Harikrishna who've both hit the walls in their development.

Vietnam still mainly relies on their 1-2 punch of Le ang Ngoc.

Dec-01-13  lakers4sho: weakness of the Chinese team is their (lack of) opening preparation. Their repertoire is narrow, teams successful against them were able to beat them through preparation.
Dec-01-13  lakers4sho: the Wangs are excellent positional players, solid maneuvering of pieces, while their lower boards (Ding, YY, Wei Yi) prefer dynamic, attacking positions
Dec-01-13  pinoymaster77: Maybe around Challengers 2015, when he was recharged, regrouped and sort of reinvented himself, Vishy could take another shot. The Challengers in April 2014 may be too soon for him, probably Levon or Vlad takes a shot next year.

Youngsters like Andreikin,Mamedyarov,Karjakin seems not yet ready for that level? Let's see...

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...?

Dec-02-13  lakers4sho: Honestly I think it's time for Anand and his generation to slowly fade away from the spotlight.
Dec-02-13  pinoymaster77: The veterans will still have their last hurrah in the next few years, it will be up to the youngsters to earn their spot at the top...
Dec-02-13  pinoymaster77: Coming from the break, things became interesting at the WCTC in round 6, coming from the break. Leader Ukraine got ambushed by the Netherlands 1.5-2.5, while Armenia got waylaid by Germany 1-3. So Russia is able to creep up, just 1MP behind Ukraine.

Showdown ng Ukraine and Russia in rd8 tomorrow, then Ukraine still has to play Armenia in the final round, so di pa sila sure.

Dec-03-13  pinoymaster77: For the 2013 SEAG in Myanmar firing off next week, a look back at the 2011 SEAG Chess tally. I think for the 2013 SEAG where some of the events are simultaneous, it would suit the PHI team better, we have more shots at the GOLD. Plus, offer ng athletes to the Yolanda survivors and heroes... http://philippineblitzchess.blogspo...

Dec-05-13  pinoymaster77: Ive just heard few minutes ago the tailend of DZSR's interview of NCFP TD Jayson Gonzales,

- For the Myanmar SEAG, ang naabutan eh gmjoey will be in 3 events, mainly mga blitz sa Individual & Team ng ASEAN Chess saka sa 'international' blitz.

- AFGM will be playing in Random 360 and ASEAN Chess

- GM Mark will be in 4 events mainly rapid/blitz (he has checkered SEAG record with 3 to 4 golds in previous editions)

- For the 2014 FIDE Elections, Jayson qualified it is only his own opinion, and eventual voter would be NCFP Pres. The tone is Kirsan has been in power 18 years (won 4 terms) and also carries a baggage, may unfulfilled promises daw for the Phils.

- He did mention NCFP is aware that current GMs will not be around forever and they would like continous turnover, however within the limits of current budget. In comparison, he mentioned Indonesia has $ 1M budget, Vietnam the equivalent of PhP 50M and Singapore also has much bigger budget than PHI
