EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Dec-05-13  pinoymaster77: Saw this posted by Noel M in FB Groups, I also just learned some of these 'records'. Yung sa #14 on Karjakin being youngest GM being eyed sana to be broken.

Napansin ko lang na wala yung 'Most number of Olympiad appearances as a player' ni AFGM...

http://thechessworld.com/learn-ches...

Dec-07-13  pinoymaster77: I think this could be the first medal for TEAM PHI, delivered by Pinoy youngsters (mukha silang HS in the pic) in wushu. Well, this is not measureable sport, but settled by judging. Yung ball sports naman have the officiating dimension, and need to overcome.

Tama insight ni spawn2 that sportswriters/ media would reasonably view the SEAG 2013 on the sports where PHI have the chance, and not on the medal placings, kasi nga each host have their own maneuverings on the events, which our sports leaders are trying to fight to change the system, hopefully as early as 2015 SEAG in Singapore...http://www.philstar.com/sports/2013...

Dec-08-13  spawn2: Our chess contingent will leave for Myanmar this coming Tuesday, December 9.

Praying that they will improve on the lone gold brought back home last SEA Games.

Dec-08-13  Nf3em: Good luck PHL Team!
Dec-08-13  pinoymaster77: Today ba o tomorrow ang departure Pards. Per SEAG site, drawing of lots would be on Dec 11 / Wed.

Getting at least 2 golds would be BIG contribution from chess. PHI is mired in 9th place (out of 11 countries) with lone silver from wushu, but heard frm DZSR that 5 wushu athletes assured of bronzes, these are for the pre-opening events...Myanmar leading the way with 8 golds with a gold windfall from chinlone.

Dec-09-13  pinoymaster77: Unofficially, from DZSR coverage eh 2 golds and 2 silvers daw sa wushu, but currentle the official SEAG site medal tally still shows just 2 silvers for Team PHI, lets just wait for the official tally.

Perlas/Womens basketball had close win over Malaysia 65 59 while Mens team were not really dominant vs Singapore, usually maintaining 10 pt leads then final score was 88 75, they didn't really have a long preparation period...

Dec-09-13  pinoymaster77: Ayun officially updated na medal tally, PHI now has 2 golds, 3 silvers and a bronze, now at 6th place. Thais also have 2 golds at 5th...
Dec-10-13  spawn2: <pinoymaster77>

They left yesterday (Dec. 9). I believe the first chess event will start on the 12th.

Dec-10-13  pinoymaster77: Hi spawn2,

Matumal nga, 3 gold so far all from wushu while host Myanmar leading with 17 golds for 'pre-opening' sports like chinlone and another 'unknown' sport.

Chess starts tomorrow and rapid in the traditional event will be decided agad bukas, while 2 rounds sa ASEAN Chess standard format... I count at least 12 'finals' in the chess skeds so this may mean minimum of 12 golds at stake...

http://www.27seagames2013.com/sport...

Dec-12-13  pinoymaster77: Puede naman pala sa chess-results.com :

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr118...

Wala palang PHI entries sa 'traditional' events eh, 5 golds at stake din, pareho ng ASEAN Chess...

Dec-12-13  pinoymaster77: 18 events / golds at stake, so wala PHI sa 6 'traditional' events which means we're vying for the 12 other golds in ASEAN Chess (5), Transfer Chess (2), International Chess (4) and Random 360 (1) :

http://www.chess-results.com/fed.as...

Dec-12-13  pinoymaster77: Maybe this can give some idea on 'traditional' chess, mukhang Myanmar version and the players can position their pieces differently, from the 'international' positions on the board ?

http://www.27seagames2013.com/news/...

Dec-14-13  pinoymaster77: BRONZE for GMJoey in Intl blitz with 11/14. Drew with champ GM Ngoc and 2nd placer IM Van Huy, actually he tied for 2nd but tight tiebreak with Van Huy.

3 golds from boxing out of the 6 finalists... http://www.philstar.com/sports/2013...

Dec-15-13  pinoymaster77: All the best sa Random 360 rapid event today for AFGM Torre and GM Panjol Gomez.

That was a GREAT experience again on chessmates' party BW/GETS/ETCF in QC last Sat, am glad I attended.

A lot of chess stories / kuwentuhan and exchange of views and spiced up by the presence of 'photographic memory' Iggy Dee and the cerebral Master Glenn (master programmer, chess scholar) and we marvelled when they would bring up games on such specific year and tournament and who were the protagonists!

Lots of topics covered like on-going SEAG, next Olympiad, FIDE elections, Carlsen vs Anand, ratings programs, ratings inflation, pairings programs,Campo moves, FIDE moves, goldfish vs barracuda, Tata A etc...

My only regret is I had an event/commitment the following am and had to wake up very early, so couldn't stay longer!

Thanks to Alex & Regge/Dari for the gifts/souvenirs. See you all next time!

Dec-16-13  torrefan: I would have come also had I been invited.
Dec-16-13  pinoymaster77: So far sa SEAG from chess eh 1 silver (JP) and a bronze (Joey). PHI as of now still have 12 golds, medyo uphill vs revised projection of 25 golds by officials.

Sked for today are ASEAN Chess Individual Blitz where GMs Mac and Joey are entered, Sa Intl Chess Rapid event eh GMs JP and Oli are playing while WIMs Perena & Frayna sa Womens rapid naman.

Dec-18-13  pinoymaster77: BIG DAY for Pinoy athletes - PHI jumped to 20 golds as of now, which means a bountiful harvest of 6 golds today, to get nearer to Spore which has 23 golds. Got 2 golds in ladies golf by our youth players, taekwondo pomsae, billiards 10 ball where 1-2 sila Biado & Orcollo, decathlon and I think sa steeplechase...I've noticed many sports already have a NEW GEN of athletes, many competitive young athletes were screened for this SEAG Edition.

GMs Mac & Dar 4th sa transfer chess, 6th sila GMs Oli & JP. Mukhang as the chess events finish 1 by 1, mas nagiging dim ang gold chances...

Dec-21-13  pinoymaster77: Sa penultimate day, sa ASEAN Rapid team event after opening round loss to Myanmar, nakaarangkada ang team to actually finish tied sa top with 7 MPs, actually 4 silang teams and we got the silver after the tiebreaks !

Dec-21-13  pinoymaster77: AFGM Eugene is quoted in this article :

Dec-23-13  pinoymaster77: Would like to greet GETS / ETCF friends and their families a Merry and meaningful Christmas ! (bago magka trapik pati sa internet ! )
Dec-24-13  metrolirot: Merry Christmas to all GETS/ETCF!!
Dec-24-13  spawn2: A Blessed Merry Xmas to everyone.

Fianchetto Realty Devt Corporation together with the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation will hold the 7th Gathering of Knights and Kings - A Gathering for a Cause on the 27th of December at the Ramon Magsaysay Highschool Compound.

All the funds that will be generated by the activity will be donated to the Typhoon Yoland victims.

Dec-25-13  cro777: How did GM Susan Polgar meet Bobby Fischer...and Eugenio Torre

"In 1992, Bobby played his second match against Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia and was unable to return to the U.S. because of his defiance of economic sanctions. The organizer Janos Kubat arranged for my family to visit Bobby at a hotel in Yugoslavia, near the border of Hungary, in order to convince him to go to Hungary rather than being in a cramped hotel room in a small Yugoslavian village.

Just to be sure everything was OK, we asked the border guards if Fischer could enter Hungary and they had no objection. With that assurance, Bobby moved to Hungary. At one point, he stayed in our summer home, which is about one hour from Budapest. He was accompanied by GM Eugenio Torre from the Philippines." (Susan Polgar)

Dec-25-13  geniokov: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all! Godbless GETS and AFGM Eugene Torre.
Dec-25-13  pinoymaster77: Maluwalhating pagbabalik kay AFGM Eugene Torre, then sabak na ulit for ETCF project / GOKAK 2013.

Hope makapagkitakits bukas, and catch up ulit sa chess kuwentos sa di busy na chessmates.
