EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Dec-27-13  pinoymaster77: Back home and feeling good from the visit to the GOKAK Annual chess gathering once again at the storied RMCHS in Cubao. Able to catch-up with spawn2, AFGM , Dari and Kots Erwin.

AFGM's SEAG teammates were in full force with GMs Antonio, Gomez,Barbosa,Paragua,Laylo there and also saw IMs Nolte, Dimakiling,Nadera,Nouri and many NMs, Non-Master Masters, Club masters and collegiate/kiddie players.

Kahit walang prizes, chess community came out en force for this much anticipated ANNUAL chess event na. I read 71 boards plus a bye player in the Open (about 143 players) and < 50 kiddies players.

Kiddies enjoyed the games/palaro and once again Fianchetto Realty and the ETCF were generous with the chess sets, Tshirts and umbrellas (top 30 sa Open and most of Kiddies).

Kiddies / U14 Champ was Jester Sistoza of Makati / Magpily camp with 5/5. In the Open those with 5 pts were WNM Christy Bernales (UP/Villa Estela group), IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia (Ateneo) and Parondo (RTU Alumni)in the blitz 3/2 event.

I also witnessed with 1.5 minutes time control nobody can dislodge IM Garcia from his seat, an assortment of NMs, Non-Master Masters, Club habitues tried but cannot come up with any anti-English.

Til the next GOKAK annual chess gathering then.

Dec-29-13  Nf3em:

I may not be able to be online on Dec 31 and Jan 1 so,

Advance Happy New year to all BW-GETS-ETCF friends!

Dec-29-13  pinoymaster77: Happy New Year Nf3em!
Here's the Philstar article on the GOKAK /Gathering of Kings and Knights, at least the GOKAK term is getting familiar to sports news mainstream. Nanalo naman pala after all sa top board sa final round si GM Mac over NM Datu... http://www.philstar.com/sports/2013..
Dec-30-13  pinoymaster77: Happy New Year to GETS/ETCF chess friends!! I sense 2014 could be a year of TRANSITION for Philippine chess, in many levels. And AFGM could play a KEY role in a different capacity.
Dec-31-13  spawn2: Happy New Year to everyone. Hope we will see more success for our players in 2014. We will have the 2014 Olympiad in Tromso Norway!
Dec-31-13  SugarDom: Happy New Year!

Not while Pichay is president. We'll probably get a drubbing in Tromso with Wesley So out of the team.

Dec-31-13  wordfunph: Jimmy Adams from British Chess Magazine 1979 June..

<Eugene presented me with a copy of his fascinating biography Beyond the 13th Move just recently published. The title is related to his draw in 13 moves with Robert Byrne at the Nice olympics, which finally assured him of the grandmaster title. The book is beautifully written and contains many attractive photographs. I hope it will be distributed in the West as it would surely be a great inspiration to young ambitious chess players everywhere.>

Happy New Year to all!

Dec-31-13  geniokov: Happy New Year to all! AFGM Eugene Torre and specially to bro.spawn2 and your family.
Jan-01-14  pinoymaster77: Happy New Year!

Wishing an even better year for Philippine chess. For 2013, can recall more local tournaments organized (mainly rapid), at least 4 intl events hosted here (PSC Open, Asian Conti/Pacman Cup, Zonals, Asian Cities), 2 silver and 2 bronze finish for SEAG Team, GM Wes' noteable triumphs in the Universiade & Unive (ironically setting off a controversy/tampuhan).

For 2014, hoping for acceleration of youth devt/grassroots program, more Pinoys becoming GMs and IMs, a FIRST WGM, Asian Youth and World Youth standard golds, and formation of strongest possible team for the Olympiad in Norway !

In particular, a FULLTIME and focussed NATIONAL YOUTH COACH who hones and develops our National Youth Champs (Batang Pinoy, PNG Champs and youth candidates for GM/IM).

Jan-03-14  pinoymaster77: Good am,
As posted last Dec 30th, had a sense 2014 will have lots of TRANSITION in many levels.

Time to plan for 2014 Olympiad, and hope NCFP could come up with unprecedented training plan.

I was thinking on a quick 'selection and invite' scheme to form the team the earliest, but then again the 2012 formula of '2 seeded, 3 qualified' was ok to address all sectors' concerns. There is still the 'equal opportunity' channel thru the National Championships/BOGM. Let them be scheduled EARLY then, starting with the Semis !

Jan-04-14  SugarDom: I will repeat my unchanging position.
For Olympiads and Asiads, you don't experiment. Just go for the ratings. (Look at my selection at the Wesley So page).

If we want to discover talent in the grassroots level, like Iskubadayb was saying just go for a National Open championships with regional eliminations (Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao qualifiers) and put millions of prizes for the top 5.

That way, it can sustain the chess career of any discovered talent, it's better than playing once in the Olympiad and no money.

Jan-04-14  pinoymaster77: NCFP under Pres Pichay in power til 2016, they're the authority.

Still much time to prepare for 2016 elections, register your org and maybe Ice can start the PR with his known chess clubs.

Jan-04-14  spawn2: Good morning,

If the #1 player of the land will not play in the 2014 Olympiad it will be interesting to see how NCFP will handle the creation and preparation of the team. IMHO, if they stick with their schedule of having the tournament 2 months before the Olympiad leaving no time for preparation, then they are courting disaster.

As to GM Wes' possible shift to a different Fed, I respect the decision of the young man.

Will this be the catalyst which will wake up the Federation? Maybe or maybe not..

Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata..

Jan-04-14  spawn2: Was watching NBA in Channel 17 (Studio 23) and was pleasantly surprised when I saw WNM Cristy Bernales (top female in the GoKaK tourney) being part of the commercial of UAAP.
Jan-04-14  pinoymaster77: Hi spawn2,
Yes,Ive caught that commercial more than twice, included were the Chess MVPs last season, WNM Christy Bernales of UP,and Timothy So Kua of champ UST (upset multi-titled FEU).

Incidentally, just had confirmation from 3 sources that UAAP chess fires off this Sat/Jan11 and this time DLSU is the host.

Jan-04-14  pinoymaster77: For 'First WGM', in the shortlist are WIM Camacho (on scholarship at UTD), WNM Bernales, WIM Frayna and WNM Fronda.

Ive personally seen in action sina WIM Camacho, WNMs Bernales & Fronda ay 'tirang mama',may dating and hugot ang tira.

Actually in the forefront in 2013 in PHI teams are Frayna and Fronda but also < 50% when facing the Viet and Indon WGMs.

Unfortunately,Bernales couldn't play in the intl events hosted here in 2013. She is the lone female bright spot competing in Non-Masters events winning a couple of them. And in the Natl Rapid and Blitz, she competed in the Open section instead of the Womens.

Jan-05-14  Nf3em: <As to GM Wes' possible shift to a different Fed, I respect the decision of the young man.

Will this be the catalyst which will wake up the Federation? Maybe or maybe not.. > I guess it's the latter, mahirap gisingin ang nagtutulugtulugan, mahirap kausapin ang nagbibingibingihan.

Jan-05-14  spartan1998: Happy New Year po sa GETS!

Silip-silip lang po pag may time.

Jan-06-14  pinoymaster77: In the light of latest developments in Phil chess elite level (Olympiad team formation) and the onset of the New Year, looking forward to sharings from ETCF/GETS and in the interim the Villa Estela Group (for lack of an official name) on 2014 rough plans and goals.

The role of ETCF/GETS/Villa Estela becomes even more crucial, on the acceleration of youth development, and supplementary training of identified kiddies chess talents.

We hope more would kibitz in this site, as the center of Phil chess for 2014 and onwards.

Initially, Im seeing more more of AFGM guesting in local tournaments, just last Jan 4/Sat he has pic guesting in the longest running First Saturday Organo Gold of Doc Perez, as part of chess encouragment / promotion.

Jan-06-14  bubuli55: Happy New Year! Sir Eugene and to your family.
Jan-07-14  spawn2: <Nf3em>

Bro Danny, am an optimists kaya I believe that NCFP will institute some changes that will be good for the development of local chess and its players. The changes may not be "major major" according to one beauty contestant but there will be improvements.

Libre naman ang mangarap at umasa: )

Jan-07-14  SugarDom: Sila nga etong, harang bro. Me bayad pang 2k pag nagpatournament ka, another 2k for ratings.
Jan-09-14  pinoymaster77: Just heard generally nung unang ma announce yung NCFP fees about 2 years ago eh a lot of resistance. But nowadays nag settle down with I think just the major Mmla-based organizers in compliance (> 100 players event) for which they now have market dun sa ok ma update ratings and compete for reasonable prizes.

Other organizers naman na below the radar continue to do so. I think sa Vismin for the most part eh unsanctioned, except for major events.

Jan-10-14  spawn2: Praying that GM Wes arrives in time for the round 1 of Tata Steel. Its been ages since we have a Filipino playing in an elite tournament.
Jan-10-14  Pulo y Gata: This is even more nail-biting than waiting for each and every move of an actual game. Will he arrive on time to play the first round or not?

Dyandyandyandyaaaan....
