EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jan-21-14  wordfunph: spawn2, magkasing-pogi kayo ni GM Torre hihi!

Happy Birthday!

Jan-21-14  Nf3em: Oi Happy Birthday brother Alex. May you receive more blessings from Him.
Jan-21-14  spawn2: Good evening po sa lahat..before the So vs Dominguez slambang game starts, I would like to thank everyone who took time out and greeted me today in this page and in GM Wes' page.

Nawa'y bigyan tayo lahat ng panalo ni GM Wes sa gabing ito.

Jan-21-14  spawn2: GM Wes has 3 more rounds to improve his performance. He is still +4 in elo gained after 8 rounds. Last 3 opponents are no push over and he should be very careful not to overextend. Just feel the "force" during the game to see whether to push hard or play a kunat game. Goodluck!
Jan-21-14  spawn2: So nice to read that GM Vishy Anand will play in the Candidates. Lots of preparation/novelties for the World Championship match which may not have been used.

His prep may have missed Carlsen but with 7 opponents in the Candidates, chances of him landing some bombs should increase.

Jan-22-14  pinoymaster77: Thats good to hear, its an indication Ex-Champ Anand may be psychologically over the shellacking he got from Carlsen in the last Championship. Or maybe he has much to lose from the prestige he has in the Indian mindset / culture?

Hopefully we can see signs of the old Tiger from Madras ?

Maybe it could be 3-cornered fight among Aronian,Kramnik and Anand? O may di papayag na youngster? Let us see...

Jan-23-14  spawn2: Aronian is on fire! This coming Candidates will be very exciting with GM Levon, GM Vishy and GM Kramnik matching wits with the rest of the participants.

With the way GM Aronian is playing in Tata, it is not surprising that a lot of people are expecting him to sit opposite the Norwegian champ come November.

I hope that next year's Candidates will have the names of So, Giri and Caruana as participants to add new flavor and excitement.

Jan-23-14  SugarDom: Yes <spawn2>. I hope it's Carlsen vs Aronian for the next WC match.
Jan-25-14  pinoymaster77: Yup, one other angle in the Candidates is Vishy itching to teach Vlad a lesson for his comment that he's afraid of Magnus in the last Championship match...
Jan-25-14  pinoymaster77: Was dwelling the past days since from DZSR interviews eh learning more and more on PSC 'mechanics'. So actually, they actually have more budget these days under PNoy (for all the sports) and actually I agree with many of their moves to make the use of the budget more efficient and performance-based.

Now for this 2014, PSC has declared they will look more for training camps, rather than overseas events na paisa-isa. This is applicable for a number of the sports, like athletics is being arranged in the US, Judo will continue to be in Japan, wushu in China and taekwondo in Korea.

Now in the case of chess, Im not aware of any group / country that offers such kind of 'training camps', maybe the closest is China's previous sports agreement with PHI, but not sure how it is sa chess.

But come to think of it, PHI was the original chess power in Asia, and we do have qualified people. Just thinking out loud if we can get these people together in a united front, this group can actually help our young Masters get accelerated for their GM quest - AFGM Torre as sole FST we have, GM Jayson, GM Bong, Master Glenn, Kots Erwin, Kots Perez & Villa Estela (Regge/Dari).

Training camps can be organized by NCFP, for PSC funding, where there's conducive venue and Trainers get compensated. Overseas-based Coaches can do so via internet, if they cannot fully return here.

A REAL Philippine Chess Academy, anyone?

Jan-26-14  spawn2: Aronian's set-up against Van Wely's Dutch has that London flavor. Looking forward to Aronian's record breaking performance in Tata 2014.
Jan-26-14  pinoymaster77: Na olats pa daw Levon kay Loek, ika nga ni J.Criste, 'mahiwaga talaga ang chess'.
Jan-26-14  spawn2: I was looking at the position with my patzer eyes and kala ko in the bag na. Science..if nanalo will add to Aronian's legend. He would have exceeded Magnus record perf in previous Tata and that would have added fuel to the match-up.

Congratas to GM Wes for a good performance. Looking forward to his next tourney

Jan-27-14  SugarDom: Yes. Aronian was up 0.8 at one point, i was surprised the next morning.
Jan-28-14  spawn2: The Zurich event is fast approaching. Am expecting that Carlsen, Aronian and Anand will try to score against these two since they may not have recovered sufficiently from their below par pwrformance in Tata.
Jan-28-14  pinoymaster77: World Champ Magnus has set a good pace in further promotion of chess globally. Aside from recent US tour, he also plans to play in Brazil, for South America area naman.

Sana meron ding 'Asian tour' and magawi siya dito satin, that would create a buzz !

http://www.chessdom.com/magnus-carl...

Feb-02-14  spawn2: Tonight, the Current Champion will meet the Ex-Champion..my suggestion to GM Anand..go for broke with white!
Feb-03-14  SugarDom: <pinoymaster77: World Champ Magnus has set a good pace in further promotion of chess globally. Aside from recent US tour, he also plans to play in Brazil, for South America area naman. Sana meron ding 'Asian tour' and magawi siya dito satin, that would create a buzz !>

You're right, this is possible!

Feb-03-14  torrefan: Even a St. Petersburg gig is possible.
Feb-04-14  pinoymaster77: What would also be a novelty is if GMs Magnus and Wesley could join a football clinic, since Magnus also likes it so much, hint na yan tie-up with the Loyola/Meralco Sparks with the Younghusband bros, and maybe soon after might be the possible network to MVP...

Football is so much more popular many kids would probably go.

Feb-04-14  SugarDom: Pareng <spawn2>, please advise if Eugene Torre would be running against incumbent Pichay in 2016.
Feb-04-14  pinoymaster77: Ubosh si Vishy sa rapids, sunod sunod losses to Levon, Naka and Fabiano then a draw with Gelfand, tapos last round pa vs Magnus on-going.

Levon beat Magnus in round 2 (rapids)! Earlier Fabiano beat Magnus in blitz. Just goes to show the champ can also have a chink in his armor...

Feb-04-14  pinoymaster77: Oh, Fabiano won over Magnus in round 4 of rapids also!

Let's see in the Challengers if he is in full bloom, and deny Levon and Vlad on their shot for the title ?

Feb-04-14  evlozare: <pinoyM> two exciting players are not in the challengers/candidates tournament in march - fab and naka.
Feb-05-14  pinoymaster77: Hi evlozare,

Oh ok, I actually thought Caruana earned a slot, sayang.

So I guess it will be a tossup between Levon and Vlad in the Candidates? With Anand and Topalov as darkhorses? But at this stage, Vishy is still not fully recovered from the championship loss.
