EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Feb-05-14  Iskubadayb: CALL OF DUTY

The NFCP presidency is open, or so I heard. Just the thought of another long run by someone incompetent is unbearable. There is only one man for the job.

There is no one more qualified. His close association with Campo in the past gave him invaluable insight in running the office. His experience in leading the NFCP in its infancy is significant.

That was a different time. The situation was a total mess, and to do what he did and be a full-time elite player at the same time, just showed great character.

He is also well-respected in the chess world. All the chess leaders know him by sight. He knows the needs of the players, especially the top players in the country. There are tons more chess-related qualities that I can mention but I just want to say that it is hard to find a kinder soul.

Others may have political connections or loads of money, and they may do a good job... or not, but with my friend, the integrity of the game will never be compromised. There is no one more devoted to the game.

Duty calls, bradidik. :)

Feb-05-14  pinoymaster77: Just to chime in, sa limited na pagkakaalam ko, 'outside looking in' eh with regards to NCFP, for AFGM it could be 'been there, done that'. He's already 'busy' and I think contented with being President of Fianchetto Realty and the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation. For the Center, heard the building has broke ground and maybe in a year's time it would be available in the building basement.
Feb-07-14  spawn2: Sugardom

Pards..I will not speculate on GM Torre's future moves re NCFP but will support your future plans. Goodluck!

Feb-07-14  SugarDom: Pareng <spawn2>, magkumpadre tayo so magkakampi tayo.

When it comes, we will make Eugene Torre the National Chess Coach. Parang National Artist because of his legacy. He should be always part of the National and Olympiad team as a trainer or as a coach bilang utang na loob for his 22 Olympiad appearance.

Alam natin what i'm talking about. And we will support the ETCF especially yung Filipino world champion na goal.

Iba kasi ngayon dahil una e full-time ang magiging pagasikaso nya dito. Mas may pera pa ngayon kesa noon.

It is now or never!

Walang magawing. :)

Feb-08-14  spawn2: ETCF officers had dinner last night to discuss in detail the activities for 2014. It was a productive meeting and will announce the programs once all details are ironed out.
Feb-08-14  Nf3em:

Brod <Alex> kumusta?

Sayang di ka nakapunta last Feb 1, btw, marami pang pagkakataon.

And, good luck to ETCF!

;-)

Feb-08-14  spawn2: bro Dan,

Ok naman: ) am here in a mall in Katipunan waiting for my kids who are watching a play in UP. At least me time to post and read chessgames kibitzes. Btw, change my contact details will FB you on the new one.

Ingats bro!

Feb-08-14  Nf3em: Copy brod <Alex>.
Feb-09-14  pinoymaster77: Looking forward to the ETCF plans and programs, this is very timely with the latest directions with our Philippine chess elite, need to accelerate the development of truly GM-caliber youth talent.

Currently, mainly 2 Youth PSC athletes in IM Garcia and FM Paulo, with Pau having the time. While lately, Jerad Docena pursued the Masters' path, a break/opportunity given during the 2013 Pacquiao Cup / Asian Continental.

Majority of those who got the 2 IM norms are hard up for overseas campaign to secure that 3rd norm, like Roel Abelgas, FM Turqueza,Docena. Only the 2 KCF events listed in NCFP's calendar, but so far silent pa din...

Feb-10-14  Rodrigo Delgado: Hello, im Alberto´s Niece. He indeed won the silver medal in the Olympiads, he is in the hall of fame of my country for that. He is schizophrenic, that´s why he stopped playing. He couldn't travel anymore because of his condition. I was searching for him on the internet and i found this discussion.

If you would like some more information about him, i will be pleased to give it. Its such a shame he didn't achieved more, he is truly a genius. He should be remembered by the international chess community. My mail is rdelgado19@gmail.com.

Feb-10-14  spawn2: Good evening Mr. Delgado,

Thank you for visiting this page. I hope that your uncle is doing fine.

Am not at all surprised that he is recognized by your country as one of its great athletes. His performance in Nice was extra ordinary.

I wish him well.

Feb-10-14  torrefan: <If you would like some more information about him, i will be pleased to give it. Its such a shame he didn't achieved more, he is truly a genius.>

Yes, we like more information about him so please give them to us here, Senor Delgado.

Did your uncle ever marry? Had children? It would be a pity if he did not as your country is known for its beautiful women.

Feb-12-14  Iskubadayb: Mukhang maganda ang hataw ng ETCF. Kung the same peeps ang nasa ncfp e mas lalong matindi ang magagawa ng mga yan.
Feb-12-14  Iskubadayb: Itong alamat na kaibigan natin e, even at his worst, ncfp will be at its best!!! :)
Feb-16-14  pinoymaster77: Good interview of Ex-Champ Vishy, let us see in the Candidates on how his 'new approach' would work...

http://www.newindianexpress.com/the...

Feb-17-14  spawn2: Habang wala pang tourney sa Pinas for our GMs eh look forward muna sa Candidates. As usual sa mga not so young ang taya ko. Anand or Kramnik to face King Magnus this November.
Feb-17-14  pinoymaster77: Ok, lets mark the dates, Candidates listed for March 11 to April 1st :

http://www.fide.com/component/conte...

Feb-17-14  pinoymaster77: Interesting field nga ano, the 'veterans' bannered by Anand Kramnik Topalov and Aronian, with Levon being the youngest. Kind of in between si Svidler, then the 'youngsters' would be Karjakin, Mamedyarov and Andreikin.

My bet would still be on Aronian or Kramnik.

Feb-17-14  pinoymaster77: In Bobby Ang's latest Chesspiece titled 'Zurich Epilogue', may discussion at length of Naka's 'yabang' or supreme self-confidence :

"Speaking about Nakamura, he made a bold announcement via twitter that “starting to realize that I am the only person who is going to be able to stop Sauron (Magnus Carlsen) in the context of chess history”. He later on tempered his statement by admitting that at current strength Levon Aronian is a bit ahead, but the tweets is an indication that Naka believes that the time is ripe for him to get a move on and vie for his world championship aspirations. Do we believe he can do this? "

2 games using the Saemisch variation of Anand and Naka's recent games vs Champ Magnus maybe under scrutiny. In both games, Magnus' opponents both had the edge from the opening per the analysis, but both Anand and Naka both faltered in their games.

Could it be that part of the 'Magnus mystique' is psychological, and the opponents just crack under pressure ?
