Feb-23-14 | | pinoymaster77: From Bobby Ang's Chess Piece today entitled : 'Memories - IM John Grefe' : I AM a ’70s guy. I witnessed the rise of Margaret Thatcher in the UK, the oil embargo imposed by the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries on the western powers, the recognition of the United Nations of the Peoples’ Republic of China, the death of Mao Zedong and the beginning of market liberalization of China, Japan emerging as the second largest economy in the world, the US withdrawal of its military forces from Vietnam, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
Of course, I was too young to have more than a casual interest in those matters. In the ’70s it was a chess decade with the excitement generated by the "Match of the Century" between Fischer and Spassky in 1972 Reykjavik, the succeeding super-tournament in San Antonio tournament (triple tie between Karpov, Petrosian and Portisch). Bobby Fischer forfeited the world title to Anatoly Karpov in 1975. By the way, contrary to public thought that Fischer would have easily defeated Karpov in 1975, several experts had the opposite view. Even Garry Kasparov, not a Karpov-lover, argued that Karpov would have had good chances due to the form he had been showing in the candidates’ matches. Determined to prove himself a worthy and legitimate champion, Karpov participate in nearly every major tournament for the next 10 years and won almost wherever he participated. A big exception was the 1976 Tournament of Champions held right after the Manila Interzonal where there was a double round-robin tournament between Karpov, Browne (US Champion), Ljubojevic (European Champion) and Torre (Asian Champion). To the shock of the chess world Eugene Torre defeated all three of his opponents once and drew the other to win his greatest victory. |

Feb-24-14 | | torrefan: I wonder if Bobby Ang has photos of himself wearing bell-bottomed jeans? Or GM Torre for that matter? |
Feb-28-14 | | torrefan: The expensive new book "Bobby Fischer--Triumph & Despair" by David DeLucia is supposed to contain a training game between Fischer and Eugenio Torre in 1992. I wonder if Spawn2 can get it and post it here? |
Feb-28-14 | | Pulo y Gata: What also needs to be done is for his fans to convince Roberto Pe Ang to finally have his Best Games book published. I wonder why the book, which was supposed to come out as early as IIRC 2011, did not see print. I imagine that there's local and international market for it. |

Mar-01-14 | | spawn2: Torrefan
Will post something about that training game when I get back in the house. Stay tuned.. |

Mar-01-14 | | epistle: <Pulo>, this review of Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook may give a hint as to why the book's publication is on hold: <“Don’t read a book out of its right time for you,” Doris Lessing once advised students who, in the course of their education, are compelled to spend inordinate amount of time on a book. It was a jab at the prevalent educational system and the restrictions fostered therein. If anything, Lessing’s life showed that we all have our own different “right times” for many things and that is how it should be. She was the oldest to win the Nobel Prize for Literature at 89 and she was not afraid to refuse to yield to the views and opinions of her time, as emphasized by her groundbreaking novel, The Golden Notebook, in 1962. But when she died last year at the age of 94, an age when one seems to start to defy mortality, I just had to start reading The Golden Notebook. Set in post-war Europe, The Golden Notebook gives a fragmented view of politics, gender and race, and a generation’s grappling with the realities and terrors in their lives—all detailed through Anna Wulf and her notebooks – black, red, blue, yellow and, later on, gold, a unifying element in the novel. Much has been written about the novel and Lessing had written about the various reactions to it in her own introductions to the book (1973, 1993). “Probably,” she wrote in her 1973 introduction, “that is why the book goes on and on as it does – because of its “charge.” It does have a remarkable vitality.” She carried the thought further in her 1993 introduction by saying that the book is “alive and potent and fructifying” and hence open to many interpretations. She was right, of course. The Golden Notebook pulsates with life and ideas and it calls to mind Dostoevsky's and even Canetti's garrulous and mad characters. A difficult but essential read.> |

Mar-11-14 | | spawn2: Another interesting tourney to check the results is the China Individual which is currently running. If am not mistaken, winners could be part of China' Olympiad team. Although the two Wangs are not playing and also Bu. Seeded perhaps? |
Mar-11-14 | | pinoymaster77: Ive also spotted Li Chao's name in the Reykjavic Open, but didnt fare well with 3.5/9. GM Ni Hua at HD Bank. Baka more on Team B or C nila, though isa sa spots siguradong shoo in dyan si Ding with his stellar 2012 Olympiad and World Cities performances, while Yu and Wei Yi can contest maybe for the last spot vs other contenders. |
Mar-11-14 | | lakers4sho: Li Chao's at first place with 8/9 no losses |
Mar-12-14 | | pinoymaster77: Yup, somebody also shared in FB that chessbomb's standings ay mali, and that Li Chao is the leader. Do you have the tournament link, lakers4sho? |
Mar-12-14 | | pinoymaster77: That 2012 Chinese team of Wang Hao, Wang Yue, Ding Liren, Li Chao and Bu is still pretty solid. I just dont know the latest on Wang Yue if he is still in tiptop shape. But China has a DEEP bench with youngsters Yu Yangyi and Wei Yi, plus other veteran GMs like Ni Hua and the 2 Zhou's. |
Mar-13-14 | | spawn2: GM Vishy Anand not a spent force yet. |
Mar-13-14 | | pinoymaster77: Oo nga the Tiger still has a mighty growl! Double round robin yata eto, so mahaba pa. Let's see if this wakes up Levon early. |
