EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Apr-14-14  Iskubadayb: Hataw, bradidik. :)
Apr-14-14  joeyj: http://chessaccount.wordpress.com/l...
Apr-14-14  spawn2: GM Eugene drawing against Ryan Dungca with black. Still within striking distance from the top. GM JP will have his hands full tomorrow when he battles GM Vallejo Pons.
Apr-15-14  spawn2: GM Eugene winning his 5th round assignment vs an IM from India.

Good start for GM Torre. He will play against fellow Olympian and team mate GM Oli in the 6th round.

Goodluck!

Apr-18-14  geniokov: Happy Easter to everyone!
Apr-19-14  spawn2: After being away from competition for more than 6 months, GM Torre put up a decent result in the just concluded Bangkok Open 2014. He registered 4 wins, 4 draws and a solitary loss against compatriot and Bangkok Open Co-Champ GM Oliver Barbosa.

Another tourney as preparation for the coming BOGM in June should bring him closer to optimal condition.

Apr-19-14  Nf3em: Congrats AFGM!
Apr-19-14  wordfunph: bow to El Eugenio..

ready na for 2014 Tromso Olympiad!

Apr-19-14  torrefan: He still has a lot of juices flowing! On to more glory!
Apr-20-14  pinoymaster77: Sana matuloy yung 2 events ng Kasparov Chess Foundation / KCF GM Invitational na originally calendared for April, but 're-sked' to May. But still no firm announcements via press releases ?

Surprising, since kainitan na ng FIDE campaign

Apr-20-14  spawn2: I wonder what transpired during the visit of current FIDE top honcho last week.

Hope all agreements made will be for the good of Philippine Chess.

Apr-20-14  pinoymaster77: Sa twitter posts ni Prez Kirsan, it includes pics with VP Binay and PSC Chair Garcia, and heard he met with NCFP TD Jayson. Not sure if able to meet up with NCFP Pres Pichay
Apr-21-14  torrefan: Who cares?

Pinoy chessers like me are more interested to know if he met Dari Castro.

Apr-21-14  Pulo y Gata: Kirsan wouldn't take the Dare, fearing Castration.

I'm buying Mr. Castro's self-published memoir, "From Amateur to Strongman", which details his climb to the Absolute Evian Summit of Nature's Spring of chess.

Apr-22-14  pinoymaster77: That was a sumptous dinner and chance for another BW/GETS-ETCF get together with bubuli55, thanks a lot!

A pleasant surprise pulled off by spawn2 and wordfunph for Bro bubuli55 indeed, and wordfun was also happy with the chess goodies!

I was able to raise some of the 'hot' topics like the FIDE Elections, PHI Olympiad team, GM Wes' training/goals set by Spice, Magnus vs Anand and his current eyepopping performance in the Gashimov Memorial.

Apr-23-14  joeyj: http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/...
Apr-23-14  spawn2: Isang pagbati ng Maligayang Kaarawan sa ating kaibigan na si <wordfunph>!
Apr-24-14  pinoymaster77: A chess 'bookworm' like our friend wordfun follows the Olympiad events closely as it has RICH history, not only the games but also write-ups on the goinds on, specially kasi dun din ginaganap FIDE elections kung cycle na.

Now on the actual games, happy reminiscing on the 2012 edition, we got kicks and goosebumps when AFGM narrated back in 2008 ba yun, GM Nigel asked him why he was not playing, and AFGM replied that time he's Team Captain or Coach, then Nigel retorted 'oh, now I have a chance to surpass your Olympiad record!' Fast track to 2012 during their match, AFGM shared di naman nag motion si Nigel to do a post mortem so AFGM stood na, and Nigel was still quite mesmerized looking at the board. It was SWEET indeed for AFGM since some era back it was Nigel who stood in his way during Interzonals times. Panalo pa PHI over England after a very very long time (GM Oli also won a long endgame over Gawain Jones, while GMs Wesley and Mark secured draws). AFGM also won over Hungary's Berkes and drew with GM Cheparinov.

Kaya, cant help but inquire on the FOLLOWUP on the 2014 Olympiad team. Sadly, still no official announcement yet on the NCC Finals / BOGM.

Apr-24-14  wordfunph: bro <spawn/pm 77> million thanks!

to GM Torre, salamat po sa pagbati sa text.

mabuhay po kayo - ang Pinakaunang Grandmaster ng Asya!

Apr-24-14  pinoymaster77: FIDE campaign in fullstream, here's the clip in Jamaica, note the high strung intro of Mr. Ian of candidate Gary : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q08...
Apr-26-14  pinoymaster77: AFGM and Prez Butch graced the opening of the Natl Age Group finals, final playing day today for a LONG tournament.

Another COLORFUL edition indeed, as per sms messages by chess friends.

May-05-14  spawn2: GM Torre will have a little more than a month to prepare for the BOGM which will commence on June 19 to qualify for the Philippine Team for his 22nd appearance in the Chess Olympiad.

Goodluck!

May-06-14  pinoymaster77: I guess since ALL PSC athletes are mandated to play in the PNG, AFGM will play at least in the standard event. I think the chess event starts May 17th. Maybe even in the Random chess(?), it could be a demo sport, like the ASEAN chess event.

Natupad na din yung call ni AFGM to have ASEAN Chess events, if we recall sana as early as Jan 2013 eh nasa media reports yung panawagan ni AFGM, but unfortunately for the 2013 SEAG eh they only had '1 week training'. During the actual SEAG competitions siguro mas na-familiarize players natin, since if I recall correctly dun sa ASEAN Chess team event naka silver ang PHI team, and muntik pa ngang mag Champion for the gold.

This would be a good tune-up and indication of 'playing form', less than a month before the 'BOGM wars'.

May-08-14  bubuli55: Gusto ko lang pasalamatan ang GETS sa isang memorable night! wordz, spawn2, pulz, pm77, Dari Castro, kardz, and most of all AFGM. It feels surreal to sit next to my teenage idol. The respect I have for GM is tremendous. BTW the autograph I got from GM in 1973 is very similar to his autograph now. :)

I'd like to wish AFGM best of luck in the coming BOGM. I pray he'd qualify for the Olympiad! That's a big deal. No better ambassador of the game and the country! than AFGM. Bar none.

Sir Eugene. When you happen to be in Texas, our home is always open.

Thank you

May-08-14  wordfunph: <bubuli55: I pray he'd qualify for the Olympiad!>

yan din ang aking dalangin.

brader <bubz> salamat din, nasa pahina mo yong mga pics :)
