EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

May-08-14  torrefan: <Sir Eugene. When you happen to be in Texas, our home is always open.>

During the old times, in our province, our home was also like that. Always open. But now, no more. I am glad that in Texas the Akyat Bahay and Salisi gangs have not yet set up offices.

May-08-14  SugarDom: You tell me. Our house is now like a prison. There's bars on all windows even the toilet. Even the zombie Apocalypse can't get in.
May-10-14  pinoymaster77: Isang enigma eh yung failed biddings for the World Championship, akala ko personally eh there would be high interest in a rematch.

Looks like Pres Kirsan's decision to have another WCC late this year has some timing problems for prospective donors. As a chessmate shared his insights, Norway is hard pressed with the Chess Olympiad, while India just spent bigtime.

Dunno what are the concerns / apprehensions of London and the US. I thought Champ Magnus' road tours including with some US billionaires was drumming up higher interest in the sport?

Not sure why the bigtime organizers are not (yet) seeing the match as commercially viable?

May-12-14  pinoymaster77: Interesting, I thought it was Kirsan camp propaganda, but the Federations who nominated are listed, for transparency. Curiously wala pa nominations from Malaysia and Indonesia (holding back their cards?)

From that list, Kirsan holds a 'wide lead' in Africa and Americas, and EVEN in Asia and Europe. But list of European Feds only show 7 - 5 in favor of Kirsan and I think they have a lot more votes, so probably that would be a key battleground, and Russia has influence there pero may Feds din daw may concern w/ Kirsan's rule.

http://www.chessdom.com/2014-fide-e...

May-12-14  lakers4sho: Why did the NFCP join the Kasparov camp? Were there specific promises? Anyone know .
May-13-14  SugarDom: Probably because Bembol is running for general secretary under Kirsans ticket and not you know who.
May-13-14  pinoymaster77: Meantime, heavy duty din Olympiad team ng France, bd5 nila eh si GM Tkachiev 2625 !

http://www.chessdom.com/france-set-...

May-13-14  pinoymaster77: On FIDE, heard from chessmates that :

- Main beef vs Kirsan is his broken promise on the Campo Cup series after Campo's demise, there was supposed to be 10 legs across Asia with $ 100K prize money each, pero ang natuloy lang eh yung leg sa Manila. Pagdating ng Myanmar (Kirsan already won) eh $10k na lang ang premyo.

- So, during Gary's first visit here in Oct, Pres. Pichay already pledged his support.

- Nung malapit na, in the Holy Week FIDE Pres Kirsan visited here, could not get audience with Prez Pichay but got to visit VP Binay and PSC Chair Garcia. Kirsan even returned to PHI some weeks after that, and that is when the offer for Bambol to be the SecGen in his ticket came up. In that 2nd visit, dinner was granted with NCFP and its BOD.

May-13-14  Pulo y Gata: The first Campomanes Memorial had fund, but where did it go? From top 30, the prize was dwindled down to, what, top 10? 20? Some prizes became debt, perhaps unpaid up to now, or partially paid.

Could it be that the example of Manila paved the way to the cutting of sizable prize fund? How can we even demand another go at it or handle a similar event if we can't even stage a good one under NCFP?

Under the current NCFP, prizes are in the air-like pies in the sky. It has nothing to do with Kirsan or Kaspy, unfortunately. The buck stops here.

May-13-14  pinoymaster77: Bukod pa yung 'funds skimming' na yun siguro.

Ayon sa kuwento, Mr Kirsan daw was willing to turnover the pledged $ 1M na (may pondo na raw, this was during campaign period), but a 'bright boy' daw in NCFP counterproposed na gawing 10 legs of $100K each ?!

Malaki siguro hinayang na nakawala pa yung $ 890K ?

May-13-14  pinoymaster77: 2 more tidbits :

- Nung Asian Team event sa Tagaytay around Dec 2013, ACF's Toti was actually initially groomed as the SecGen in Kirsan's ticket, and when he reportedly asked Pres. Pichay eh the latter adviced he's supporting Gary. Kaya during karaoke time, ang kanta daw ni Sir Toti ay 'My Way'.

- Part siguro ng pledge ng Gary camp are those 2 KCF / Kasparov Chess Foundation GM Invitational events, back in Jan this year NCFP calendared it for April, then re-sked to this May, but still no news. Gary pledged $ 10K for Yolanda victims during his visit here. But for the $25k contributions he makes to the Federations, eh he did release to Malaysia, but heard 'on hold' pa for PHI. Seems they're still not yet 100% sure, until the voting is done ?

- There must still be other underlying reasons for Kirsan's camp to still vigorously pursue the NCFP/ PHI vote, aside from the 'sentimental' reason that the late Campo groomed Kirsan for the FIDE Presidency. Maybe PHI is still seen as having 'historical role' in Asian chess, or still has 'residual influence' ?

Let's see the events that would unravel in the next 3 months.

May-13-14  torrefan: I wonder what Dari Castro's thoughts are on all these?
May-13-14  joeyj: http://www.rappler.com/sports/by-sp...
May-13-14  torrefan: <While aware of the gap it would cause between him and Pichay, Tolentino said that he had accepted the nomination for the good of Philippine chess.

“It was given to the Philippines as (Ilyumzhinov’s) moral obligation to the late Campomanes, whether not endorsed by the federation of the Philippines….it is a golden opportunity, more than a silver platter,” said Tolentino in a text message to Rappler. “It’s not for me but for the country.”

Efforts to reach Pichay through his cell phone proved in vain.>

This is how Filipino businessmen behave during elections--they bet on both horses so whoever wins, they don't lose.

NCFP "dividing" itself is a smart move.

May-13-14  geniokov: NCFP behind Kasparov´s camp while Tolentino runs under ticket of Kirsan Ilyunshimov. Para sa akin, mas magandang manalo si Tolentino, then kung in "good terms" sila ni Pichay, then Pichay can be appointed in a much higher position!(konting sipsip lang!) Turn over na lang ang NCFP kay MVP! Oh di ba?Ayos!
May-13-14  pinoymaster77: Yes, that is a common Pinoy businessman or pol's practice to 'have all bases covered'. Like in a Presidential race, a taipan would donate say to all 5 Presidential bets, with the higher amounts going to the 'winnable' bets.

Kumbaga yung mga earlier posturings (Gary 'campaigned' much earlier), eh yun ang mga 'prepa', etong official FIDE nominations eh yung opening phase. Pupunta pa lang sa middle game. Enjoy how the chess pols/officials play their chess games off the board then. Dami pa telenovela chapters and susunod na mga kabanata dyan.

May-13-14  Rookiepawn: <torrefan> May I point out it's not "Filipino businessmen" but just "businessmen". I can assure you it's not an exclusive ploy from Philippines, but pretty much seen everywhere...
May-14-14  pinoymaster77: Whoaa, may budget issues pa Olympiad sa Tromso,Norway !

http://www.chess.com/news/troms-oly...

May-19-14  pinoymaster77: Good am,

PNG sked today for rapid and blitz events, AFGM and GM Oli expected to join the fray. All the best.

May-20-14  spawn2: Mr. Pichay has formally declared that three (3) people will be seeded in the Philippine Team to the Olympiad.

GM Wesley's inclusion is a no-brainer while GM Ino and GM Oli's appointment maybe subject to debate but for me it is a welcome development.

I still thank GM Ino to this day for giving way in the last Olympiad. It paved the way for the team to need one more member. Whether it was GM Torre or GM Barbosa who benefited from GM Ino's begging off is no longer important. What is important is that both players were able to join the team and contributed significantly to the improved performance of the Philippines from 50th place to 21st.

Moreover, GM Torre broke the Olympiad record of 20 appearances.

GM Oli's inclusion is a logical move. He has proven himself to be capable of holding the Board 2 position plus his performance this year has been simply outstanding.

For GM Eugene Torre, it will a little more difficult to qualify since there are only two slots available but I still believe that appearance 22 is still a big possibility.

Good luck to your stint in BOGM this coming June

May-20-14  pinoymaster77: 2014 Olympiad wish list ko pa din :

1. GM Wesley So
2. GM Oliver Barbosa
3. GM Ino Sadorra
4. GM John Paul Gomez
5. GM Eugene Torre

Come Olympiad qualifying and actual competition time, eh historically AFGM's playing level rises to the occasion.

There's also the 'rematch' with GM Nigel Short.

May-20-14  epistle: Instead of wish list, we should have a prediction contest here as to who will be the 4th and 5th members of the Olympiad Team. Wordfunph still has a lot of chess t-shirts to give to the winners.
May-20-14  pinoymaster77: Hold muna siguro, it seems scenarios still open
May-21-14  Iskubadayb: Basta kasama si bradidik e maligaya na ko. :)
May-22-14  spawn2: No news yet from NCFP camp or from Mr. Pichay on whether revise line-up so am still assuming that the 3 handpicked players will go.

With regard to which line-up I would prefer..bakas ako ng lima ke pards pm77 : )
