EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

May-31-14  wordfunph: research na rin natin hehe! 15 olympiads pa lang pala si GM Short, malayong malayo sa 21 :)

http://www.olimpbase.org/players/zj...

May-31-14  spawn2: In order for GM Torre to put more distance between him and his pursuers, I share your sentiments that he must gun for appearance No. 22.
May-31-14  SugarDom: That might just happen with the current turbulent situation!
May-31-14  torrefan: 21 appearances may never be broken anymore. for unlike in the past the appearances of new strong players in almost all countries are more frequents nowadays. and of course, we must not forget the proliferation of pirates. an excellent player from one country who theoretically is capable of making 21 appearances in the olympiad for his country may not be able to do so because he may just be pirated by another federation.
May-31-14  pinoymaster77: Ayun o maliwanag pa sa sikat ng araw, thanks for the olimpbase links, kabayang wordfunph! So the 'scoreline' eh 21 for AFGM and 15 for Nigel. For AFGM eh can also be 22 consecutive Olympiad appearances, nung 2008 as recalled I think non-playing Team Captain siya nuon?

Eh sa VERY SLOW turnover of talents sa England eh baka pati sa Senior years eh maka contend pa nga pompous Nigel ah.

Now for the forthcoming NCC Finals (June 19th nga ba start?), eh malamang mga 6 GMs laang makalaro - GMs Gomez Torre Antonio Barcenilla Laylo Bitoon so kung nasa reasonable form si AFGM eh may laban sa TOP 3 o 4 ah. Sana he can muster enough adrenaline ulit, naaamoy ulit ang 'teritoryo' nya na Chess Olympiad !

Jun-01-14  pinoymaster77: Sorry if have to post here, but maybe its apt as AFGM is like a 'Senior Adviser' to Phil chess, and concerned with goings on. Mukhang ganito SONA ng Phil chess, o 'panaghoy' ko lang ba?

From top to bottom :

- On the FIDE elections side, for the underdog Gary camp, dun committed Mr Butch and tumatakbo pa for the post of ACF / Asian Chess. Sa Kirsan camp naman andun Bambol as Sec Gen, and dun pa din Toti. Sa August pa magkakaalaman but now as the campaigning intensifies, tingin ko lang parang on the defensive ang Gary camp.

- Sa NCFP side naman, NSA head has many open cases, busy with business and now 'campaigning' (via internet or nasa abroad?), so day-to-day activities mainly with RD Jayson. Ganun pa din, nasa 'Just in Time' mode. Eto lang if true na June 1 ang 'deadline' for submission of team members eh the NCC Finals is just set for June 19 - 27 !

Pati nga kiddies hawa thru their parents, majority of top kiddies eh exposed sa blitz pustahan.

- Sa recent Natl Age Group finals sa Quezon, there were 3 protests/cases with 2 cases umamin yung erring player na they tanked their games for the benefit of the player's camp na kumausap / nag offer sa kanila. But the erring players were just given kids gloves treatment (no sanctions) and the a players are still in the PHI team list going to Macau.

- Kahit na pinakamadaming youth events this first half of 2014, lagi pa ding reklamo or kasalanan ng NCFP / PSC, dami REKLAMADOR na Parents/Coaches.

- Epekto na din nito eh as of yesterday per officials' meeting with the PHI team players of their parents, eh last batch na etong 42 players going to Macau under the 'elims / qualifiers set-up'. Reportedly, PSC wants to focus more resources to its PSC athletes/national pool.

Question eh wala na bang pag-asa? Ang sagot ko eh MERON as long as madami pa ding naglalaro and interested sa chess. Andyan pa din NCFP/PSC making do with around PHP 10M ANNUAL budget. Andyan pa din major private organizers like Doc Perez' group, Alex Dinoy's J'Adoube group and LTEG Sports, and main corporate organizer Shell. Andyan din ETCF, Regge/Dari's group, WCC and many more developmental Coaches (mainly former players) all over the country.

Jun-01-14  spawn2: Am still confident that we will send the highest rated team in the history of Philippine chess to the coming chess Olympiad.

Di kaya nag submit muna ng 'interim' lineup ang NCFP, then will finalize after the NCC Finals ?

Jun-02-14  kardopov: < Am still confident that we will send the highest rated team in the history of Philippine chess to the coming chess Olympiad.> I'm hopeful but not as confident. It would be a pleasure to see a ragtag team pero palaban to represent our country.
Jun-02-14  bubuli55: GM Nigel Short would be 61yo when he plays on his 21st Olympiad appearance. That's 12 yrs ahead, 2026. Should I be worried that GM Nigel will break AFGM record? A fat NO. :)

AFGM will still have that record when I'm gone :)

Jun-03-14  spawn2: I salute Mr. Chino Trinidad for making
"Pagpupugay" a reality.

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Congrats to GM Eugene Torre for being one of the nineteen (19) sports legends recognized.

I will definitely visit Resorts World to see the exhibit.

Jun-03-14  Iskubadayb: If I run the show, he is guaranteed a spot in Tromso. A grand celebration awaits back home for establishing a new olympiad record. A gauntlet of rewards will be bestowed for almost 50 years of service to the country! The pride of the Philippines deserve no less.
Jun-03-14  torrefan: Yes. This should be made to happen. And we will all be proud of him and our country who nurtured him and which he loved back with all his heart. Then we will realize that this would not have been possible had he changed federation midway, or at the peak of his strength.
Jun-03-14  pinoymaster77: Great 'Pagpupugay' project by Chino, mabuhay!
Jun-04-14  wordfunph: <Iskubadayb: If I run the show, he is guaranteed a spot in Tromso. A grand celebration awaits back home for establishing a new olympiad record. A gauntlet of rewards will be bestowed for almost 50 years of service to the country! The pride of the Philippines deserve no less.>

tumpak!

Jun-05-14  joeyj: 1st Annual Asian Chess Excellence Awards

<Asia’s first Grandmaster, GM Eugene Torre of the Philippines, will be given a special “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his dedication and commitment to chess and his stellar record.>

<Manny Pacquao of the Philippines was chosen “Chess Patron of the Year”.>

http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/201...

Jun-06-14  pinoymaster77: Congratulations to AFGM Eugene Torre for another milestone, and chess patron Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao! May this also encourage and inspire the Pacman to sponsor more chess events.
Jun-06-14  pinoymaster77: Kung June 25th ang awarding eh overlap pala sa NCC Finals, which is slated to start June 19th.
Jun-06-14  joeyj: AFGM will send <spawn2> to receive the award !
Jun-06-14  spawn2: <joeyj>

Ubosh tayo dyan!

Jun-06-14  joeyj: BTW Go na sa Tromso, Norway ang Olympiad 2014 !

https://chess24.com/en/olympiad2014...

Any update on PHI Team submitted last June 1, 2014 (deadline of submission).

Jun-06-14  pinoymaster77: Ayush yun ah, kaya ni Toti arrange agad yung visa and air ticket ah. Kelangan ba ng chaperone ahehe.

Not sure if that June 1st 'deadline' for submission of line-up is firm. I think historically may flexibility yan ?

Jun-06-14  joeyj: ^^^ Prepare na rin acceptance speech !
Jun-06-14  pinoymaster77: Its the 21st edition of Shell Active Chess, NCR leg is this weekend sa Megamall. Usually, guest speaker si AFGM .

All the best to Laguna players Jerick Marino and Eula Dela Cruz, while their sibling/cousin wage battle for PHI in the on-going 15th ASEAN Age Group.

Jun-07-14  spawn2: Visited Shell Active in Megamall this afternoon and was able to talked to Mr. Alex Dinoy and the Marketing Head of Shell. I told them that Shell is one of the reasons why chess remains popular in the country.
