EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jun-07-14  RedShield: You should have told him that chess is one of the reasons that Shell remains popular in the country.
Jun-07-14  pinoymaster77: From text updates from Laguna Coach / Trainer Zeus Orozco, while their sibling/cousin are campaigning in Macau for PHI,Jerick Marino of San Pedro remains at 5/5 having wins over Justine Mordido and Roi Parro, while Eula Dela Cruz of Siniloan has 4/5, along with 3 other Girls (Docena,Tejada,Samarita) who have 4 pts. Only the TOP 2 Boys and TOP 2 Girls will advance to the Natl Finals. Key encounter ni Jerick vs Julius Gonzales (LSGH) in rd6 this am!
Jun-07-14  spawn2: <Redshield>

That is an interesting suggestion: )

Jun-07-14  pinoymaster77: Now that the GM Wes decision is out via the letter posted in Polgar blogspot, most probable na yung Option B na the team is composed of the 'willing and available' Masters.

The forthcoming NCC Finals set to start June 19th (if no re-sked due to World Rapid & Blitz) will probably have 4 to 5 slots at stake. Go AFGM Eugene Torre!

Jun-08-14  epistle: Nasa Megamall ako kanina at napanood ko si AFGM being interviewed on cam.

Sa Megamall Powerbooks naman, brand new (nasa plastic pa), in algebraic notation, P100.00 each lang, Chess Fundamentals ni Capablanca (revised & updated by nick de firmian with 14 illustrative games na additional) and The Ideas Behind Chess Openings by Reuben Fine.

Jun-09-14  spawn2: GM Wesley So's intention of transfering federation is finally out in the open.

I will not comment on whether he is doing the right decision or not since it is his life. He alone will have to face the consequence of his actions whether good or bad.

Hopefully, this will make NCFP revisit its overall program in balancing its thrust between discovering new talents and retaining existing ones.

Most pressing matter NCFP has to face is the creation of the team for the Tromso Olympiad. It has to check whether the other two seeded players will play (Oli Barbosa and Ino Sadorra) so that it can adjust its strategy.

If GM Barbosa also decides to sit this one out, we will miss our no. 1 and no. 3 players in the line-up.

My suggestion to NCFP is to select the remaining four (4) and train the team for two (2) months.

Am still praying that we see GM Wes' and GM Barbosa (even for the last time) carry the Philippine flag in Norway.

Jun-09-14  torrefan: <spawn2: GM Wesley So's intention of transfering federation is finally out in the open.>

Do you not wonder why it was kept hidden for a year?

<I will not comment on whether he is doing the right decision or not since it is his life. He alone will have to face the consequence of his actions whether good or bad.>

Do you not wonder if it was really his decision? Was there no undue influence whatsoever?

<Hopefully, this will make NCFP revisit its overall program in balancing its thrust between discovering new talents and retaining existing ones.>

Was it really NCFP's fault?

<Most pressing matter NCFP has to face is the creation of the team for the Tromso Olympiad. It has to check whether the other two seeded players will play (Oli Barbosa and Ino Sadorra) so that it can adjust its strategy.>

Can't NCFP send us instead? We can beat at least Macau!

<If GM Barbosa also decides to sit this one out, we will miss our no. 1 and no. 3 players in the line-up.>

But the no.4, Pulsar, is very much alive and kicking!

<My suggestion to NCFP is to select the remaining four (4) and train the team for two (2) months.

BW-GETS need no training!

Jun-09-14  joeyj: Eugene Torre, another national chess gem after becoming Asia's first chess GM in 1974 and making the quarterfinals of the World Championship Candidates Matches in 1983, for his part, said there's nothing to be sad since the 20-year-old So will be recognized as someone who came from the Phl anyway regardless of his newfound country.

"We can't judge him (So) if his ambition is to become a world champion. It's his personal decision, anyway," said Torre.

Torre, however, said it's time to give in to So's request.

"The best thing to do right now is to agree to his (So) offer to play for the country one last time in the World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway this August and set him free," Torre said.

Jun-09-14  pinoymaster77: Pero teka - is GM Wes playing for PHI in Tromso still an option? I didn't read it in GM Wes' letter to NCFP Pres. Pichay.

It was just a verbiage / comment in the Polgar blogspot - is it still an option, my understanding is its already too late, Wesley is already listed in the US team as Coach as per the news.

Nga pala, did PHI submit a line-up to Tromso organizers, if the said June 1st deadline was firm?

Jun-09-14  joeyj: ^^^ Was there a first letter last year? Maybe AFGM was referring to that 1st letter?
Jun-09-14  pinoymaster77: Its in Polgar blog comments, yun nga last year pa yun and dami nang nangyari.

Wes' letter was just drafted recently and released, since it states 'World Rapids & Blitz next week', it was just released maybe yesterday.

Di talaga pinakinggan, since Wes is 20 years old, better to have the 'father and son' talk with his benefactor Butch Pichay. Ok din yung letter, but have they talked already ?

sinungaling tong ale na eto, no? :)

Jun-09-14  Iskubadayb: Kap, good to see you. :)

Jun-09-14  pinoymaster77: joeyj,

Yun nga ang basa ko, wala na yung option to play for PHI in Tromso, already too late, citing the June 1 deadline.

Yun na lang (longshot), Wesley and Pres. Pichay have to talk it over DIRECTLY.

American NBA Blatche a proud 'Filipino'

Life is Ironic.

Jun-09-14  joeyj: This is the win-win solution GM Eugene Torre, the Philippines’ longtime chess pillar, sees in the aftermath of So’s announcement that he is relinquishing his Filipino citizenship to hasten his development as a chess player and make a decent living in the US.

“If So plays for the country in Norway, he will not appear ungrateful,” said Torre.

“The NCFP, on the other hand, will not appear as a hindrance to So’s development as a player and as a person.”
