EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-03-14  epistle: If they don't like to play give their slots to willing kibitzers here like myself. It is my dream to play in the Olympiad.
Jul-03-14  pinoymaster77: spawn2,

Jul-03-14  epistle: But my strength is for the frontline. But anyway, for the country, I concede.
Jul-03-14  pinoymaster77: Asst Managers sila regge and sugardom, malamang to assist Atty Canobas...

Dito siguro magiging 'war room' ng Tromso Olympiad. Whoaa, probably another electrifying atmosphere in the Olympiad pag nakita ulit ng players and officials ang Olympiad legend na si AFGM Eugene, he is in his elements pag Olympiad time!

May elections pa and FIDE Congress, eventful na Olympiad eto sa Tromso. Madami sigurong makuhang souvenirs ang players !

Jul-03-14  JILBATCH1: Changing of the guards for Philippine Chess, with the durable ,uncompromising General El Torre showng the young guns the path they would travel.Even with the absence of so-called 'elite' GM'S,I still honestly believe that we have a decent competitive line-up came Olmypiad day.Cheer up chess-loving Filipinos it could be a "BLESSING IN DISGUISE".God bless us all ;)
Jul-03-14  pinoymaster77: I guess this Bandera interview settles it on GM Wes not playing, tapos may update pa sa Polgar blogspot na :

"Update: Wesley just received an email today, July 3, 2014, from the NCFP Secretariat about the upcoming Chess Olympiad, with the attachment of an official communication letter from Chairman Pichay to PSC Chairman Garcia on the official team composition of players and coaches of the Philippines in the upcoming Chess Olympiad (which includes Wesley, Oliver Barbosa, Julio Saddora, Eugenio Torre, and John Paul Gomez). This is more than a month after the submission deadline for the Tromsø Chess Olympiad.

Wesley immediately responded to Chairman Pichay restating that he did make 2 requests to transfer federation (last November and again a little more than a month ago). He officially declined his official invitation today (July 3, 2014), the same day he received the email, and reaffirmed to Chairman Pichay his duty as coach of the US team after he failed to hear anything from the NCFP after the June 1, 2014 deadline to submit a roster for the Chess Olympiad.

In the same email, Wesley also made the third request to Chairman Pichay for consent to immediately switch federation to the US. It is now up to Chairman Pichay and the NCFP to decide what course of action to take."

Jul-03-14  pinoymaster77: Was curious on the rankings / finish, eto yung link for Men's team, nasa #38 ang PHI, the 21st place finish in Istanbul in 2012 was marked improvement, though sana nga may rare chance to gatecrash yung TOP 10 nuon kung nanalo sa final round.

For the 2014 edition, we have to be realistic on a lower finish due to less firepower, but this TEAM would proudly represent our country !

Jul-04-14  pinoymaster77: DAYDREAMING, sana pala 8 rounds na lang and eto na naging FINAL RANKING ! This was fresh from PHI triumph over England!

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr776...

Jul-04-14  JILBATCH1: Don't know but just expressing myself as a 'legit' player,Pau Bersamina and Jan Emman Garcia at this stage is at par if not better than our 'elite' GM'S.I think it is still a decent and competitive line-up with the addition of this young guns.Changing of the guards "chess loving" Filipinos, changing of the guards.Could be a "BLESSING IN DISGUISE",no need to fret whoever the team's composition would be.I will just enjoy watching every round came Olympiad day.God bless us all !
Jul-04-14  torrefan: Changing of the guards is certainly good.

But we must also have the guarding of the change.

We must protect our young guns from pirates.

Jul-04-14  kardopov: What about Barbosa? Will he play or not? Changing of Federation won't be good for him. He's still not in the mold of Wesley So. He'll not get special treatment like Wesley have. I think he should boosts his stock and playing board 1 for the Philippines will do the trick, that is if he can hold his own at board 1. Huwag sana syang magmadali.
Jul-04-14  kardopov: How about the training. It will be a quickie one if there ever will be.
Jul-04-14  torrefan: Pinoys train while they play. That is why there is no need to change players every olympiad. Their stint at Tromso will be their training for the next olympiad in Baku. That is why GM Torre performs well during olympiads--he's always a part of the team. So his games now are also his training games for the next.
Jul-04-14  pinoymaster77: No point in following up or waiting kung ayaw na maglaro for PHI. By Mon, dapat naman siguro NCFP makes the official announcement on the FINAL Men's team composition.

Malamang will go by the 2014 BOGM ranking order, and siguro yung prospect player's docs already being pursued in parallel. Next in line GM could be Dar or IM Jem for 'Oli's spot'.

Jul-04-14  torrefan: I still think they should give Bersamina a try. He should be made to start his olympiads early.
Jul-04-14  Benzol: So far this is the only game that has surfaced between these two E Torre vs Fischer, 1992 . Does anyone know when in 1992 it was played and how many other games were contested as well?
Jul-04-14  pinoymaster77: Wonder if with the team composition of 1 US-based and 4 PHI-based eh kung may chance pa maka fly in si Coach Banjo to PHI, say for a 1 week camp or team bonding? Or maybe GMs Jayson and Euge can fill in for him in organizing such activity?

For the Womens team, puede mapatawag ni GM Jay yung 4 na nandito. Not sure if WIM Camacho is still in town, or back in US?

Jul-04-14  JILBATCH1: If Barbie is not eligible, then it should be Ino,Gomez,Torre,Pau,Jan Emmanuel that should represent our country for their excellent showing on BOGM.Could also mean they are in good form or in top shape today, not to mention mentally prepared to accept the challenge.Mas maganda nga cguro yun,'less expectations' for them to deliver, but who knows ?
Jul-05-14  spawn2: <Benzol><Does anyone know when in 1992 it was played and how many other games were contested as well?>

According to GM Torre, this game was played a week before the start of the Fischer vs Spassky 1992 match. The two GMs only played 1 training game.

Jul-05-14  pinoymaster77: Announced na IM Pau's inclusion in the Tromso Mens Olympiad squad as per Philstar's Joey Villar.

Regarding GM Oli's slot, if the BOGM 2014 final rankings would be followed, WIM Frayna was 4th but she's in the Womens team. Then 5th si GM Laylo and 6th si IM Garcia, 7th si GM Joey. Ganun siguro ang sequence of checking by NCFP on player availability and willingness to play.

Jul-05-14  Benzol: <spawn2> The bio above mentions games he played against Bobby which made me think there was more than just the one. Thanks for the update. Cheers.

:)

Jul-05-14  JILBATCH1: Congrats to IM Pau, dream come true para sa Bersamina family and of course sa lahat ng followers and supporters ni IM Pau.GM Laylo pala eligible in case na d pwede si GM Barbie. So be it,PUSO !!! :)
Jul-05-14  pinoymaster77: The core of the team will be composed of the 'Three Musketeers' from the 2014 BOGM in AFGM Torre, GM Panjol Gomez and IM Paulo spartan1998, they come from 3 different generations. They will be joined by US-based GM Ino Sadorra, forming a 'few good men' core for the Philippine Mens team in 41st(?) Olympiad Tromso,Norway.

The 3 young chess masters in GMs Sadorra, Gomez and GM-to-be Bersamina are known to be STUDIOUS and industrious students of the game, having daily chess review routines, while AFGM Eugene Torre banks on his 40 years+ experience and rich Olympiad experience. It becomes more apparent that regardless of ELO (it can even go down to < 2400) but come Olympiad time eh some special adrenaline is called upon. With such vintage performance, this 2014 Tromso stint may still not be the last Olympiad for El Eugenio.

This team may not be the 'strongest' but they are able and willing. Para sakin eh the placings in previous Olympiads in 2008 and 2010 would be the standard, but the TEAM can cook up some MAJOR UPSETs in Tromso. In fact 'offsite Team Captain' spawn2 has a battleplan for a path to at least a TOP 20 finish, which he might share at the opportune time.

Meantime, while awaiting the Olympiad about 3 weeks+ away, GMs Torre and Gomez were the only undefeated players in the 2014 BOGM, maybe we can further dissect their games together with IM Pau's for general advice on their current form and what could be the improvement areas they can focus on.

Calling calling the 'team of seconds' from GETS, time to revisit the PGNs again, in the context naman of projecting the higher quality of competition in the upcoming Tromso Olympiad.

Jul-06-14  pinoymaster77: Article on the 2 US teams, wala GM Robson, GM Shankland's first Olympiad, baka sya makaharap ni GM Dar or IM Pau kung magkatapat sa Swiss system sometime in the Olympiad...
