EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-06-14  joeyj: Barbosa undecided on Chess Olympiad stint
By Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) | Updated July 6, 2014 - 5:00pm

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Jul-06-14  pinoymaster77: joeyj,
Meaning 5 to 10% chance na lang yung kay GM Oli playing, the slot would probably go to GM Laylo or IM Garcia, pending confirmation of acceptance / availability.

Kung di pa rin, kumuha na tayo sa GETS, si torrefan more than willing !

Jul-06-14  spawn2: Whoever that 5th member will be, he should get full backing. At this point, all chess loving Filipinos should give their 100% support to Team Pinas.
Jul-06-14  pinoymaster77: Was trying to search for official Tromso Olympiad site, just like what the Istanbul Olympiad had (not a chess24.com site) but can only see FB site and there was this blog site but its in Norwegian language ahehe, anyway some pics to behold :

http://blog.tromso2014.no/

Jul-06-14  pinoymaster77: Eto daw chess24.com eh official partner ng Tromso organizers so yung portion for Tromso 2014 eh andun mga infos.

Amendments accepted naman per 3.7.2 with a fee per change of player.

Yung line-up submitted dito ang in question sa FB groups Ahedres, but most probably an 'interim lineup' submitted for the June 1 'deadline' to reserve team slots.

Jul-06-14  joeyj: I think the issue is about ...

As Ed Andaya had mentioned ...
"After reading this https://chess24.com/en/olympiad2014...

the NCFP owes @wesleySo93 and the #chess world an explanation. Who's telling the truth now?"

"Ed Andaya @edandaya746 ยท
Contrary to NCFP's claims, @wesleySo93 was never included in the original line-up to the Tromso Olympiad. So why delay his transfer?".

Jul-06-14  pinoymaster77: The thread by Mr. Eli in FB Groups Ahedres was citing chess24.com sa nag reflect na PHI line-up dun.

For me, am more concerned on the final PHI teams to Tromso.

On the GM Wes change Fed / release, better to be in the So page and better na Wes and Butch further discuss it directly over there in Tromso in Aug.

Mr. Andaya is free to interview NCFP for his concern / query.

Jul-07-14  pinoymaster77: While driving, heard over radio at DZSR for the sports news filed by J. Caringal, yung 40k per month for GM Oli eh in fact just needs his signature. Kasama din dun 24k per month retroactive pay from Jan to May. Dun sa report na yun eh GM Oli daw given 1 day naman to finally decide. He was also reportedly reminded to have the proper values as national athlete to be a good role model for the youth.

In parallel, GM Laylo's papers are in process, as fallback option.

We'll have to wait probably til Wed/Thurs for the 5th team member to be FINALLY finalized.

Jul-07-14  pinoymaster77: While waiting sa FINAL Mens Olympiad lineup, eh yung FIDE Elections din kasabay nung Olympiad sa Tromso, saka may FIDE Congress din.

- Kung manalo pa din Kirsan eh andun Bambol as Sec Gen, and I suppose Toti will still have ACF post.

Then yung mga projects na mention nya sa 2 visits nya eh sana gawin nga.

- Kung manalo naman Gary, andun Butch sa ACF.

Will have to lookout what are the changes in store for chess globally. Magiging active channel siguro ang KCF for the projects.

Jul-08-14  spawn2: Two days waiting na lang and we will know members of 2014 Philippine Team to Tromso Olympiad.
Jul-08-14  pinoymaster77: What the h___, nakakabato eh ahehe.

I'll put them down hypothetically :

A. If GM Dar is 5th team member
Agreed ako GMs Torre, Sadorra, Gomez,
Laylo, IM Paulo ang board order.

B. If GM Oli decides to COMMIT to play,
board order can be GMs Barbosa Sadorra Torre Gomez IM Bersamina OR

GM Torre Barbosa Sadorra Gomez IM Bersamina.

How about your ideas' chessmates ?

Yung mga 'team of seconds', tahimik pa ah ?

Jul-08-14  torrefan: Theoretically Pau "The Berserker" Bersamina is the weakest of the lot. But he is the hungriest of them all and quite unknown in the Olympic scene so I think he should take Board 1. It is only by putting him in the hottest of fires that we will know what kind of metal he is made of. Besides, the NCFP already announced that he is the one taking "Wesley's slot." Wesley was Board 1 so The Berserker should be our spearhead. NCFP cannot afford to be an Indian giver.
Jul-08-14  Iskubadayb: The country should not wait for Oli. Seeding is a privilege, not a right. Dar should have been officially announced as part of the team ages ago.

Nevertheless, if Oli somehow makes the team, I will put him on board 2 if I'm in charge. Same as the others, he can't handle the elite better than GM Torre.

Jul-08-14  JILBATCH1: Taking Wesley's spot does not mean he (Pau) will man Bd.1 for our team.Could only mean that he will complete the official line-up,thus having a 5 player rooster.
Jul-08-14  pinoymaster77: Trip lang yun ni torrefan, masanay na.

Team members coming from PHI will reportedly fly out July 30th. IM Pau will play in the Natl Jrs July 25 to 29.

Ano pa puede nilang gawing team activity sa remaining 3 weeks ?

Jul-09-14  wordfunph: my guess --- RP to send Laylo for Barbosa.

vakvakan na!

Jul-09-14  pinoymaster77: Magkagayon, malamang siguro nasa TOP 40 pa din PHI with the average ELO and din sa chess24.com eh noted at least 170+ countries na nasa 'Open', so siguro malamang 1st round pairing ng PHI eh vs a lower rated team? Ano hula sa line-up to be filled?

Meantime, nice of wordfunph to dropby, could you share some of the chessbook readings you've done that mentioned Olympiad experiences? Mas eventful daw kung kasabay ng FIDE Elections, tama ba?

Jul-09-14  spawn2: If weak opponent for round 1..ipahinga ang top board ilabas ang Spartan!

Awoo..Awoo..Awoo!

Jul-09-14  spawn2: The Coach and Team Captain will need to do a good job of rotating the players. Aside from giving everyone enough rest, color assignments, opening or defense repertoire of opponents, over-all strength of opposition, current form of our players are just some of the factors needed to be considered in fielding the right team for a particular round.
Jul-09-14  kardopov: Go team Philippines! I will support whoever they will be. It's the country's pride which is at stake after all. And if the team will finish no lower than 15th place, buhay na naman ang chess sa pinas!
Jul-09-14  pinoymaster77: Good am,

Dami sana sporting events nag luko naman cable kagabi and had to track via gamecasts in the internet. SanMig survived Rain or Shine in Game 5 to win the latest PBA event as well as the GRAND SLAM. Legendary Coach Tim Cone gets his 2nd grand slam 18 yrs after the Alaska feat.

Sa World Cup naman, after 30 mins extra time eh tied pa din Argentina & Netherlands, sa penalty shootout Argentina prevailed 4-2 to book the finals seat vs Germany!

Dito naman sa final 5th member to finalize the team eh siguro mag-uusap ulit Prez Butch and GM Oli this late am to firm it up, if playing or not.

Jul-09-14  JILBATCH1: Actually, agree ako ke 'torrefan' na si IM Pau ang hungrier player and for that matter dapat mabigyan ng mas maraming playing opportunities.Plus the fact na "bata" at mas mahaba ang stamina. He can be our scorer sa 3 or 4 though.Go Pau !!! PUSO. . .
