EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-10-14  pinoymaster77: Meron na palang article sa PDI, and may indicated na what I would call 'interim' board assignments, puede pa nila ma-finalize yan yata right before the event.

Pero mali ulit yung 21st Olympiad appearance for AFGM, it should be the 22nd na : http://sports.inquirer.net/158528/g...

Jul-11-14  pinoymaster77: A ayun, sila yata ang geniuses, siguro 90 to 95 % firm na etong board assignments, since pa interview ni Butch to PDI / Roy:

MENs TEAM
Board 1 : GM Ino Sadorra
Board 2 : GM Oliver Barbosa
Board 3 : GM John Paul Gomez
Board 4 : GM Eugene Torre
Board 5 : IM Paulo Bersamina

WOMENs TEAM
Board 1 : WIM Janelle Mae Frayna
Board 2 : WIM Cheradee Camacho
Board 3 : WIM Catherine Perena
Board 4 : WNM Jan Jodilyn Fronda
Board 5 : WNM Christy Lamiel Bernales

What do you think, team of seconds/consultants and supporters ?

Jul-11-14  spawn2: I still believe that this line-up would be more competitive but then again Go Pinas lang lagi tayo!

Bd 1 GM Torre
Bd 2 GM Barbosa
Bd 3 GM Sadorra
Bd 4 GM Gomez
Bd 5 IM Bersamina

Jul-11-14  pinoymaster77: From the July 2014 FIDE ratings :

MENs TEAM
Board 1 : GM Ino Sadorra 2600
Board 2 : GM Oliver Barbosa 2561
Board 3 : GM John Paul Gomez 2526
Board 4 : GM Eugene Torre 2423
Board 5 : IM Paulo Bersamina 2330

Average rating : 2488

Jul-11-14  bubuli55: < spawn2: I still believe that this line-up would be more competitive but then again Go Pinas lang lagi tayo! Bd 1 GM Torre

Sabit ako dito :)

Jul-11-14  JILBATCH1: Dun muna ako sa line-up ng women's team magcocomment, habang di pa malinaw sa akin ang preferred line-up ko sa men's.Anyways, ito na cguro ang pinakamalakas na na-assembled na women's team natin ,mula nung mauso ang ahedres sa PINAS.15th-20th place is not bad, pero mas maganda kung top10 finished cyampre.GO PINAYS,kaya nyo yan,PUSO !!!!
Jul-11-14  pinoymaster77: Good am,

Checking the line-ups in chess24.com and kung ganun pa din average rating ng ibang countries, at 2488 average rating ng PHI Mens team eh projected at 47th ranking.

Total listed countries eh 170 so ang median / half ng field eh 85, so maybe makaharap sa 1st round eh 47 + 85 = 132nd ranked country, baka Malta o Netherlands Antilles sa 1st round? Lets see, baka may movements pa lineups, saka baka ratings dun eh base pa sa May o June FIDE ratings, since nakalista pa si GM Oli na 2590 ang rating. Baka ma update pa ratings as per July FIDE list?

Jul-11-14  pinoymaster77: All the best sa ETCF maiden project with schools, awhile back na post sa news yung MOA signing with a FilChi business group.

Today first day of chess clinic, and tapped mainly FI Lilet and Coach Erwin and their tapped Assts. Expected daw over a hundred students, siguro mainly organizing and assessment muna ng mga levels.

May mga talented na din na FilChi players sa Kiddies ranks na madalas mag compete sa local tournaments, examples sila Kerby Koh (dati Lourdes Manda and now recruited by LSGH) and Henry Li III na recruited na ng Adamson.

Sana from the ranks of these FilChi beginners/intermediate players eh may umusbong na Natl Age Groupers.

Jul-12-14  wordfunph: <The women’s team seems stronger with the sudden rise in the level of play of WIM Janelle Mae Frayna of Far Eastern University and the return of Chardene Cheradee Camacho.

Frayna, who has shown that she’s capable of beating male GMs, will occupy board 1 while Camacho, a computer science student also at UT Dallas, will play board 2.

Completing the women’s team to be mentored by NCFP executive director GM Jason Gonzales are WIM Catherine Perena on board 3, Jan Jodilyn Fronda of De La Salle on board 4 and Christy Bernales of University of the Philippines on board 5.>

eto na ata pinaka-bagyong line-up ng Pinas. Let's hope for the best!

go Sir Eugenio!

Jul-12-14  torrefan: This is the better line-up:
Bd 1 IM Bersamina
Bd 2 GM Torre
Bd 3 GM Barbosa
Bd 4 GM Sadorra
Bd 5 GM Gomez

Against the top seeds, Bersamina should face the ultimate monster (Aronian, etc.) to give the lower boards better chances. Bersamina has a lot of begginer's luck with him and he can upset one or two of them and maybe get some draws.

Jul-12-14  pinoymaster77: Some sage Olympiad experience yung kay Iskuba having been in one, maybe in the first round, we can see if :

Manning Board 1 and I think being a FIRST TIME Olympian, GM Ino can have his 'feeling out' and break-in

At Board 2, hopefully GM Oli has shaken off the pshycological effects of the discussions/negotiations in playing for the PHI, he's in tournament shape having played in a series of US events to earn prizes for a living. I hope he makes a repeat of his 2012 Istanbul exploits.

At Board 3, I think this could be a return to the Olympiad team after some time for GM Panjol. It was at the Olympiads that he earned his final 2 GM norms, so maybe the Olympiad 'air' is also good for JP, gets his adrenaline up.

For AFGM at Board 4 eh he's in his elements at the Olympiad and a lot of officials/players would probably shake his hamd warmly and applaud him. He needs pacing though, baka napasarap nung heat of the moment nung 2012 Olympiad specially after that win over England when afterwards eh PHI was actually in the TOP 7 ranks. Baka those 7 games nuon na mainly sunod-sunod eh nakapagod din.

For IM Paulo naman, its his very FIRST Olympiad, let it all sink in and SAVOR the experience. Am sure this is the START of many Olympiads up ahead for IM Pau. Im almost sure he'll stick it out with the NCFP / PHI wherever he goes to Collage.

Jul-12-14  Iskubadayb: Bwisit ka, TF!! Napahagalpak ako dyan sa line-up mo!

Jul-12-14  Iskubadayb: TonyMayls, opisyal na ba yang laynap mo?
Jul-12-14  Iskubadayb: Sandals na pala ako bradidik. Tuloy ko bukas. :)
Jul-12-14  pinoymaster77: Iskuba,

Based yan sa PDI Roy Luarca article kahapon am.

Jul-12-14  pinoymaster77: Vietnam's lineup (not sure if FINAL), bago sa pandinig yung IM Minh Huy, baka galing sa youth ranks nila?

Vietnam
Captain: Minh Thang Nguyen
Average Rating: 2553
1. GM Le Quang Liem - 2712
2. GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son - 2621
3. IM Nguyen Duc Hoa - 2509
4. IM Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy - 2483

Jul-12-14  epistle: wow, 4 nguyen brothers in the vietnamese team. A real chessplaying family!
Jul-12-14  pinoymaster77: epistle,

Siguro, thats the glue for their TEAM unity?! Ilang Olympiads na nasa TOP 20 sila, or kada round lumalaban sa taas.

Pati Team Captain eh may Nguyen

Jul-12-14  pinoymaster77: Sa Dortmund, nakasilip lang this am, GM Meier with black scores a BIG win over GM Vlad Kramnik !

Replaying the game, it was English opening, and na harvest ang pawns ni Vlad, at the final position Georg was ahead by 4 pawns. and may passed pawn pa...
