EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-14-14  pinoymaster77: Eto nga pala link dun sa 2012 Istanbul Olympiad, to rekindle memories :

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr776...

Jul-14-14  pinoymaster77: Tsina nga pala sumira sa momentum natin nuon sa rd9, after PHI's swashbuckling win over England in rd8, capped by AFGM's landmark win over Nigel.

China
Captain: GM Jun Xu
Average Rating: 2679
1. GM Ding Liren - 2714
2. GM Wang Yue - 2713
3. GM Yu Yangyi - 2675
4. GM Ni Hua - 2653
5. GM Wei Yi - 2634

Jul-14-14  pinoymaster77: Checked the TOP players of China, anyare nga kila GMs Wang Hao, Li Chao and Bu? Im not aware of any change Fed moves. Etong si W. Hao works for a top GM as second, I think ?

http://ratings.fide.com/topfed.phtm...

Jul-14-14  wordfunph: bubz, hagalpakz si aki sa wento mo malufet si Virgil haneppppp! your post made my day :)
Jul-14-14  torrefan: Spartan1998 vs. Wei Yi looming in the horizon.
Jul-14-14  pinoymaster77: Rematch yun pag nagkataon ah, Pau beat Wei Yi nung younger years, nung di pa pumapalaot
Jul-14-14  pinoymaster77: May napansin ba kayo sa TOP 100 ng Tsina, compared sa TOP 100 ng Pilipinas?

Pansin ko lang sa Tsina eh less than 30 ang > 2500, and ang Pinas eh wider ang player base, across many generations and a number nga naging inactive pa FIDE rating.

2 salient points :

- Tapos pag ELITE player na eh todo suporta, pati training overseas and extensive tournament exposures. Check their TOP 8, can ba 2 world class 4 player teams!

Maybe we can apply some of the concepts to some of our player groupings

1 Wang, Hao g CHN 2730 2 1989
2 Ding, Liren g CHN 2726 10 1992
3 Wang, Yue g CHN 2715 3 1987
4 Li, Chao b g CHN 2711 0 1989
5 Bu, Xiangzhi g CHN 2693 3 1985
6 Ni, Hua g CHN 2674 20 1983
7 Yu, Yangyi g CHN 2670 11 1994
8 Wei, Yi g CHN 2636 6 1999

Jul-17-14  spawn2: It looks like GM Torre and IM Bersamina will play in the early rounds of the Olympiad since GM Barbosa needs to fix his visa to Tromso and will arrive after opening round pa.
Jul-17-14  pinoymaster77: Eto pa nagbabagang news, BIG issue between Tromso organizers (Gary's camp) and FIDE / Kirsan.

1 scenerio daw baka mag change HOST
ang Olympiad !?

http://www.chessdom.com/tromso-orga...

Jul-19-14  pinoymaster77: We will know by Monday Europe time if the Tromso organizers will abide by FIDE's invocation of its authority per Article 6. Boy o boy magiging mainit din FIDE elections duon ah. Expect accusations to be hurled by both camps :

http://www.chessdom.com/fide-with-s...

Well,well,well..WELEY akong ma SEY !!
Jul-19-14  spawn2: Paul Lee showed the "Angas ng Gilas" in their game against China for 3rd place. GM Ino will also show sa Board 1 ang "Angas ng Team Pinas" sa Olympiad.
Jul-20-14  pinoymaster77: Madaming Pinoy na from armchair mag-comment or from afar, o critique without proposed solutions, mahirap nang patulan pa.

I just mentioned in that FB thread na suportahan yung Olympiad teams.

Meantime, dun sa Mon deadline (bukas na) eh what will FIDE do if the Tromso organizers still do not allow the 9 teams to play, thereby defying FIDE's supposed authority per the FIDE / Olympiad 'rules'?

Jul-20-14  spawn2: Bang's BOGM article:

http://bworldonline.com/content.php...

Jul-21-14  pinoymaster77: While driving eh heard yung later part na ng interview ni Judith Caringal of DZSR 918AM of TD Jayson, every Mon 12nn to 1pm pala bagong segment ni Judith na 'Billiards and Chess Hour'.

Since then the USSR has splintered to something like about 30 countries, and pinaka prominent na duon ang Russia,Ukraine and Armenia na mainly naging Olympiad champs in the recent editions.

Post-USSR eh best finish daw ng PHI eh sa Calvia (Mallorca area?) nung 2004 na actually tied for 12th to 19th places but due to lower tiebreak eh 19th ang PHI.

Not sure kung GMs na nuon sila Dar Laylo and Mark Paragua. 6th member si IM Senador.

IM pa daw Jay dun and stellar performance sa Board 4 with only 1 loss (vs Azerbaijan yata) and 3 draws, then the rest eh wins na. Not sure kung dun sya naka GM norm o sa side event around the Olympiad. GM Torre held the top board and did well at that time (mga 2 or 3 losses), but he did hold the top board vs top GMs. GM Joey also did well when playing with white pieces. Main scorers kada round nuon eh GMs Torre,Joey and Jay daw, and malimit nakaka 2.5 pts sila.

Sa last round daw eh ang opponent eh Hungary (which they won!). Wala daw Judit Polgar but naglaro sila Almasi, Berces and Jay's opponent was then newly minted European champ that time in Peter Acs.

Jul-21-14  pinoymaster77: Sa game nya vs Acs, sa tingin daw ni Jayson eh lamang sya but there was a draw offer. Pag ganun eh 'SOP' to consult the Team Captain, so privately Jay conferred with then Kap Atty Estimo. The advice was since mukhang winning si gmjoey eh Jay can accept the draw.

Eventually that game was drawn. As Jay recalled PHI won 2.5-1.5 with GM Torre winning and gmjoey Jay and Mark having draws.

Kung in case daw na tinuloy game ni Jay and naipanalo, with a 3-1 final round result eh sana 9th ang PHI.

So maybe that Calvia team is something to emulate, it was not an ALL GM line-up.

In ending, Judith asked Jayson for his final words and he still asked for support and unity. Nasa social media na daw like FB and yung iba yata nababasa nya na di supportive or to put it plainly eh critique ng critique. Inspite of it all, even though its mahirap eh di naman impossible na PHI regains its past Asian chess glory, for starters.

Jul-21-14  pinoymaster77: May punto si Iskuba dito earlier, BLUNDER pa on the part of NCFP to pursue GM Oli na nasa US na.

Pano nga kung di lang late but 'no show' sa Tromso? Kung 4 players lang for 11 games straight eh papano magiging fresh pa for the last 2 rounds.

Yun GMs naman na di nag-qualify and may feeling of entitlement pa eh bakit madaming quick GM draws. Nung penultimate round, halos draw lahat tapos nanood ng IM Pau vs WIM Frayna game na umabot yata ng 100 moves sa endgame tapos mas maaga pa final round the ff morning. Pati sa final round, kung gusto mag contend pala eh had to settle for draw.

Buti nga AFGM kahit Senior years na in the last 2 Olympiad qualifiers eh nakipag compete and nakakuha naman ng slots. A MARVEL nga at age 62 eh naging National Champion pa.

Jul-23-14  spawn2: Based on the announcement of NCFP Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales yesterday at PSC Forum, ito na board order:

Board 1 - GM Ino Sadorra 2600
Board 2 - GM Oliver Barbosa 2561
Board 3 - GM JP Gomez 2526
Board 4 - GM Eugene Torre 2423
Board 5 - IM Paulo Bersamina 2330

Jul-24-14  pinoymaster77: Actually BITIN pa yung sa slot ni GM Oli, its still unclear if he can get visa on time. Apektado tuloy yung buong Mens team, esep esep 4 players lang ba silang maglalaro ng ALL 11 games, o may 5th team member.

Ang flights ng mga players manggaling sa Pilipinas eh July 30th daw, Im not sure paano time difference and what time in Tromso time sila mag arrive dun, but I suppose thats ats least the previous day before the Aug 1st (Tromso date) deadline for the FBO / Fixed Board Order and Team Composition.

Duon na nila ma-finalize yung Mens team, siguro July 31 o Aug 1 yun for Phil time?

Yung FIDE elections nga ba eh before the Olympiad round 1? Sana ok yung 'Comelec' nila duon and no major major controversies. It may well be the closest FIDE Presidential elections in years!

Mr. Butch will reportedly go there too since he's running for the ACF, and also encourage our teams. Sila Paul will also be introduced to Mr. Butch daw by a mutual friend.

Jul-24-14  geniokov: <pinoymaster77: Actually BITIN pa yung sa slot ni GM Oli, its still unclear if he can get visa on time. From US to Norway or from Philippines to Norway? Usually, the proper procedure is that GM Oli MUST secure his visa from the point of his origin! Embassy ang Norway Embassy to give him a visa.

GM Oli is in NY USA
