EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-24-14  spawn2: With GM Torre at Deutsche Bank Services in Global City, Taguig promoting chess thru chess talk and simul.

Another project of the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation.

Jul-24-14  spawn2: GM Torre scored 19 - 0 vs the very game employees of Deutsche Bank Services.

Prior to the simul exhibition, GM Eugene addressed a roomful of chess enthusiasts on the benefits of playing the royal game and the lessons you can learn from chess and its possible application in life.

After the game, we met the President of Gumaca Chess Club of Quezon who conveyed his intentions of inviting GM Eugene to grace one of their future tournaments.

The Foundation really appreciates the warm welcome extended by Deutsche Bank Services management and staff led by Mr. Veluz, one of the high ranking executives of the company.

Exciting times for GM Torre..exciting times for the Foundation.

Jul-26-14  pinoymaster77: Congratulations to the ever expanding 'ETCF and Friends' circle, its growing by the day! Meron pang largely untapped na Financial / BPO sectors in the BIG city.

Good seeds have been planted!

Jul-26-14  pinoymaster77: Editorial eto ng PDI ha, siempre its now a HOT topic among chess fans in social media.

What I can relate here is the mention in DZSR citing the recent guesting of NCFP TD Jayson in the PSA Forum, that the team will once again heavily rely on the contributions of AFGM in this Olympiad!

Jul-26-14  spawn2: <Sugardom>

Medyo pards: ) Kundisyon both body and mind in prep for the coming Olympiad.

Jul-26-14  wordfunph: PM thanks, swabe 'to! :)

<But shining still is Eugene Torre, who will be playing in his 22nd Olympiad, a record unmatched by any player, dead or alive.>

anim na tulog na la-ang, vakvakan na sa Tromso!

Jul-27-14  pinoymaster77: Mas SWABE pa eto mga Pards, Ms. Sally me texted on the Radip 5 guesting kanina 130pm of IM Pau together with AFGM Torre and WIM Fronda. Excerpts from AFGM were :

- On the FIDE elections,Pinoys are in both sides with Pichay running for ACF under Gary while Bambol was invited by Kirsan camp to be Sec Gen in their ticket

- Had to tackle Wes' change Fed move, and AFGM recapped for Pinoys to still support Wes, and wish him well on his goal to become a World Challenger.

- AFGM didn't mention on GM Oli's case, but just mentioned that GMs Sadorra and Barbosa 'will be coming from the US'.

- Players coming from Phils fly out on Tues / 29th.

- On his 21st appearance, Mr. Ron asked if he was given recognition and AFGM mentioned he was called up the stage in Istanbul, but doesn't recall if he was presented with a plaque.

- On his 22nd appearance and to keep on going, AFGM mentioned GM Short again when Nigel mentioned to Eugene during the 2008 Olympiad that 'ahe you're not playing, now I can catch up with you'.

Dennis Principe retorted the way AFGM is going and how he keeps his good condition, eh there are probably more Olympiad stints in store for AFGM, hes not yet DONE !

Jul-27-14  pinoymaster77: Nice article on WC Magnus !

"Carlsen likes to compare himself to the tennis player Rafael Nadal, “We’re relentless, gradually overpowering our opponent and never giving up.”

http://www.buffalonews.com/life-art...

Jul-27-14  pinoymaster77: Team members coming from Phils fly out on Tues na per the Aksyon Sports guesting kanina pm. Malamang yung 'playing Coach' option na mangyari for the Mens team, sa Tromso na nila ma-finalize. Puro final meeting, travel preparations and courtesy calls na lang.

Buenviaje Team PILIPINAS ! Puso !

Jul-27-14  torrefan: Maybe we shouldn't use the same rallying cry "Puso!" kasi baka magkalat din tulad ng Hilas. How about "Utak!"?
Jul-27-14  Pulo y Gata: Yes, UTAK!
Jul-28-14  pinoymaster77: Puede rin pareho kasi kelangan din ng FIGHTING HEART to get those wins OTB! Utak at puso!

Meantime sa chess-results.com, mukhang ratings ng 4 regular players ang kinuhang average kasi 2528, ranked 44th. In case si GM Banjo ang ma-tap in case GM Oli can't make it, eh the team average would be 2506.

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr140...

Jul-28-14  spawn2: Checking the line-up of England and the board order, looks like Torre vs Short 2 will not happen. GM Short was assigned to man Board 2 while GM Torre is on board 4.
Jul-28-14  Pulo y Gata: When we cheer "Puso!" in basketball, surely we do not mean the the heart or its proper functioning, literally. We mean the fighting spirit or fighting character. After all all the players have puso and, unless one has a heart ailment, it's a non-factor in the conduct and result of the game.

Same with chess. You use your brain here, not the romanticized "puso", no matter how catchy hoops aficionados find it. You can have the fighting spirit in chess but without the skill and preparation it won't amount to much.

Jul-28-14  torrefan: Also, the hidden connotation of the cry "Puso!"--specially vis-a-vis the Gilas team--is that what they <LACK> in the other departments of the game they make up for their heart or fighting spirit.

"Puso!" then, if you analyze it, is pejorative by implication. The team is actually second-rate, batil, pero may puso.

What if the Gilas team is composed of an All-Star selection from the current roster of NBA players. Would Puso still click? No way! The team would be top notch and would not need any romantic, misleading battlecry.

Jul-28-14  torrefan: But if, and only if, the Philippine chess team would really like Puso! as its battlecry, then the Gilas team--to avoid unnecessary duplication and confusion, should adopt "Atay!" as their own battlecry. For "Atay" rhymes with "Patay" and each and every time they lose, they'd say 'atay na naman tayo!!!
Jul-28-14  torrefan: But I apologize for being off topic...
Jul-28-14  pinoymaster77: Watchout for your puso, torrefan!

BTW, chess players also cross train to basketball for fitness.

See the ball with 'puso', Gilas also just started their build-up for Spain :

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Jul-28-14  pinoymaster77: Buenviaje to TEAM PILIPINAS bukas!

Then maybe after couple of days, we can see the final Men's line-up.

Jul-28-14  spawn2: It will be interesting to monitor the performance of the ff Asian countries:

China
India
Vietnam
Philippines

In the last Olympiad they finished in the following order:

China 4th
Vietnam 7th
Philippines 21st
India 35th

Jul-28-14  pinoymaster77: Got curious on India, di pa rin maglaro Anand kahit di na sya World Champ.

On the other hand WC Magnus is probably playing for Norway since they're the hosts.

Pati pala Adhiban eh Super GM na, naalala ko tuloy nung last Asian Games when PHI beat India I think twice...

Jul-28-14  pinoymaster77: China and Vietnam are also in a form of transition taking a look at their Olympiad line-ups.

China will give Wei Yi his first Olympiad slot, while the Viets field their new GM-Elect Nguyen Huynh

Mas lalo na Indonesia, si GM Mega lang familiar...
