EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jul-29-14  torrefan: Another one for the country, Mr. Philippine Chess!

With my extreme gratitude and admiration I shall always remain

very truly yours

Torrefan.

Jul-29-14  pinoymaster77: Per this PDI Roy Luarca article, GM Banjo has heeded the US travel advisory, but the article says GMs Sadorra and Barbosa (?) will join up from the US.

36 hour trip pala from PHI. FIDE Elections set for Aug 11th.

Wonder if the US teams and other US citizens would proceed with their travel to Tromso ?

http://sports.inquirer.net/160260/p...

Jul-29-14  pinoymaster77: Salient points on the trip from the PDI article, nakapasok na daw sa NAIA ang PHI-based players and Coach as of this writing :

"Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre, who will be playing in the biennial meet a record 22 times, will be joined by GM John Paul Gomez and International Master Paulo Bersamina in the 36-hour trip that will take them to Doha (Qatar), Arlanda (Stockholm) and then Tromso.

.....

“It’s a blessing that we were able to leave early,” said Torre. “We’ll have time to rest, recover and prepare.” The Filipinos will arrive in Tromso on July 30, ahead of the Olympiad’s opening ceremonies on Aug. 1. Action in the 11-round competition that lured players from a record 180 countries, starts Aug. 2."

Jul-29-14  bubuli55: AFGM. Good luck! 22! Subaybayan namin games nyo :)
Jul-29-14  spawn2: Had the opportunity to be with GM Torre this morning together with Regge Tee to celebrate the life of Mr. Cesar Iligan, Chairman of Fianchetto Realty and Eugene Torre Chess Foundation who joined our Creator last month.

As he was preparing to leave for the airport at around 2:00 pm, I said "GM top 20 ha"..he replied, we will give it our best shot. Anything is possible, last 3 rounds will be very crucial.

Jul-29-14  SugarDom: Condolence.
Jul-29-14  spawn2: It seems GM Oli Barbosa is not joining the team due to visa problems but GM Barcenilla has decided to join the team and could man either 3rd or 4th board.

Our participation in this Olympiad has been full of drama which makes it as one of the most exciting in recent memory.

Jul-29-14  gokusano: Go! Go! Go! Asia's first GM. The Filipinos are counting on you. Your experience will be the biggest asset your team mates can depend on.
Jul-29-14  spawn2: There is a big possibility that GM Gomez will man board 2. Checked Olimpbase and saw that GM JP was our 2nd board during the 2010 Olympiad. He scored 5 points out of 9 games.
Jul-29-14  joeyj: PH loses Barbosa, Barcenilla returns

Jul-29-14  JILBATCH1: Don't fret chess aficionados it could be a blessing in disguise,'less expectations' but could surprise us all.KAYA NILA YAN,KAYA NILA YAN,KAYA NILA YAN !!! SULONG !
Jul-30-14  spawn2: Team Philippines should be in Norway at this time after a 13 hour flight.

Time difference between Pinas and Norway is 6 hours. If it is 9:00 am in Norway, its 3:00 pm sa Lupang Sinilangan.

Jul-30-14  pinoymaster77: Yun na din ang final projection ko eversince the GM Oli saga eh na sa tingin ko from the signs eh di matutuloy, na the FINAL Mens LINE-UP would be GMs Sadorra, Gomez, Barcenilla, Torre and IM Paulo!

Mabuti na lang pala at tumawag si Banjo kahapon, and 'saved' si GM Jayson na maisama sa line-up, at namumuro na talaga GM Jay at wala nang option as of yesterday!

From the FANTASTIC FOUR eh naging FAB FIVE na!

Let's UNITE behind our Olympiad teams!

Jul-30-14  pinoymaster77: Sa Phil time eh 430am daw sila sa Qatar, and past 10am eh on the way to Stockholm, sabi sa Luarca article yesterday eh 36 hours(?) total travel time daw eh.

And expect MORE drama / action / fireworks to happen pa sa Tromso! Its FIDE elections!

Jul-30-14  spawn2: Sumilip ako sa chessresult.com for the schedule of the games. Round 1 is on August 2 at 3 pm Norway time which means 9:00 pm dito sa Pinas. Yanig pala ang body clock ng mga players natin since a game can last up to 3 am.

Master Isku, with 3 days to go, kaya ba mag-adjust ng katawan ng mga players natin?

Jul-30-14  spawn2: <pm77>

A 36 hours pala kala ko 13 hours lang. Medyo kalbaryo pala for our players going to Tromso.

Jul-30-14  Iskubadayb: Alexhine, mahaba yang 3 days. Ayak yan. Importante e pag dating dun at araw, kahit anong antok mo ay wag matulog. Hintay ng gabi para sabay ka na sa tulog ng local time. Easier said than done!
Jul-30-14  pinoymaster77: July 31 o Aug 1 daw lipad GM Banjo, mukhang di aabot ng round 1 o pagod pag kararating.

Ready lang IM Paulo 'spartan 1998' Bersamina for round 1 !

Malamang nyan outside TOP 50 ang ranking ng PHI Mens team pero nasa upper half pa, so for 1st round opponent eh vs a lower rated country yan.

Jul-30-14  pinoymaster77: Pati layover / waiting time for the next flight yung 36 hours. Just arrived na daw Stockholm around 1pm satin, then 5 hours waiting then mga 6pm lipad na papuntang Tromso, dito siguro mas TIGHT na security checks...
Jul-30-14  pinoymaster77: Iskuba, 'white nights' daw sa Tromso as per invite, maliwanag din daw pag gabi.

Siguro dapat meron silang pangtakip ng mata to simulate the night 'darkness' ?

Jul-30-14  spawn2: <Master Isku>

Thanks for the pointers;)

Jul-30-14  spawn2: Was reviewing the line-up and board assignments of the different countries participating in the Olympiad in chessresult.com and I still expect some adjustments for some of the teams.

According to someone familiar with the Olympiad Rules and Regulations, the team has to submit final line-up and board assignment at least 20 hours before start of the formal opening.

Jul-30-14  pinoymaster77: Punta rin daw PDI's Roy Luarca, he reportedly flew out this am.

May 'major daily' coverage din tayong mababasa, aside from chess-results.com and I think may livegames din sana (not sure how many matches can be covered).
