EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Aug-10-14  Iskubadayb: Ah, ayos na balitz yan ha. Kay Jay tayo! Iiskor yan basta di matisod sa bukasan.

Gandang gabi po dyan. :)

Aug-10-14  arkitekto: Smsuporta prn kmi sa inyo RP players...stick to the fight when hardest hit...laban para sa bayan! :-)
Aug-10-14  spawn2: Ruy Lopez ang labanan Hossain - Torre, maganda ini!
Aug-10-14  Iskubadayb: So far, ayos lahat.

Aug-10-14  pinoymaster77: Good pm,

Gulat nga ako tagilid nung una si GM Ino eh biglang bumaligtad at una pang nanalo!

Good sign, sana may maka convert din like si GM Jay

Aug-10-14  bubuli55: Pinaglaro na si GM Jayson. Beter leyt dan neber
Aug-10-14  pinoymaster77: 2 other exciting matches are Hungary vs USA and Russia vs Spain. Hungary is leading 2-1 with GM Rapport's win over GM Onischuk (his 1st loss), while still ongoing is the board 4 war between GM Judit Polgar and the so far undefeated GM Shankland.

The Russia vs Spain is tied so far at 1.5-1.5 with GM Vlad Kramnik absorbing another loss this time to top board GM Vallejo Pons, nakabawi GM Karjakin. It all boils down to the Bd2 game of GM Girschuk vs GM Guijar.

Isreal sent Indonesia back down with a 3.5-0.5 thrashing.

India is holding mighty Armenia so far 1.5 - 1.5 with 3 draws, Only remaining game at Bd2 is India's undefeated GM Sethuraman vs GM Sargissian

Aug-10-14  pinoymaster77: First loss na AFGM, sana may maka convert either kila GMs JP or Jay
Aug-10-14  bubuli55: I was hoping for a draw because of opposite B colors. But not so. Resbak bukas

Round 9 on 2014/08/11 at 14:00 : 8:00PM PHI Time

Men/Open:

Bo. 40: 159 Pakistan (PAK) - 52 Philippines (PHI)

Women:

Bo. 27: 43 Philippines (PHI) - 86 Costa Rica (CRC)

Aug-10-14  Pulo y Gata: Worse structure si Gm torre when i left last night, 1-0 pala. Drawn match. Pigang piga ang players.
Aug-10-14  spawn2: Against Pakistan, rest muna GM Torre para fresh sa final assault. Target is 14 MP for a respectable finish. Kaya yan!
Aug-10-14  pinoymaster77: Good am,

Both teams got good draws vs Pakistan and Costa Rica, kaya yan.

Yes, good timing for AFGM to get much needed rest then sabak sa last 2 rounds!

Aug-10-14  Iskubadayb: The cavalry came a bit late for our beloved GM. It was obvious early on that the form has vanished. There were still flashes of defensive brilliance played but they were few and far between. There was no more juice in the bottle. Still, a valiant effort by the legend.

Kelangan ang kumpletong pahinga ni bradidik. Tatlong panalo sa last 3 ay bakasakals pumasok sa loob ng trenta.

Aug-10-14  wordfunph: agree, AFGM should take a luft.

papakalbo ako pag di pa na 4-0 ng PHI ang Pakistan. Promise yan.

Aug-10-14  Iskubadayb: Pramis ha. Para pareho na tayo ni Bubzki. :)
Aug-10-14  pinoymaster77: For the Men's Olympiad title eh which country is your bet? Yesterday before round 8 eh posed the question in 2 chess groups if the Azeris ever won the Olympiad? Parang di pa ano, ang ma recall ko lang they would always be in the running in the past Olympiads pero pagdating sa 'final rounds' eh lalaylay vs the chess powers, na mainly Armenia and the Ukraine have divided amongst themselves in the last 5 Olympiads eh. Now, in round 8 last night China stopped the Azeris with a convincing score of 3-1 when Boards 3 and 4 delivered wins care of GMs Yu Yangyi and Ni Hua.

After round 8, China (14MPs) now has the solo lead followed by France and the Ukraine (13MPs). Also with 13 MPs are the Czechs, Romania,Azeris. At 11th to 14th are India (drew with Armenia in rd8 !), Hungary USA Armenia with 12 MPs. Top seed Russia is at 19th with 11 MPs (held by Spain to 2-2 draw)

Last shot for the 'contenders' like Russia and Armenia to make their move this round 9, else get left behind by the other 'hungry' contenders. Round 9 'wars' include China vs Ukraine for the lead, Czech vs France, Azeris vs Romania.

Next tier eh Israel vs Hungary, Bulgaria vs Cuba, Belarus vs Netherlands, USA vs Germany, Armenia vs Serbia. Russia gets a break in being paired vs Norway's Team B but I think this was the same team that drew with the Ukraine in an early round.

Aug-10-14  pinoymaster77: PHI is on the right track on being in transition and giving its top youth players the needed intl exposure.

Vietnam and Singapore have this for their Board 4, while Indonesia fielded lone GM Megaranto then the rest were non-GMs, most probably younger players.

Of course specially when the team and officials are back here, there will be a lot of naysayers / critics, and just need to stay the course.

Aug-11-14  Iskubadayb: It is no coincidence that China is in the lead. They are playing with a lot of energy. The team is in good form and well-managed. I think they will win this olympiad. They might even win the Women's side... a sweep!

I feel that if another team has a chance, it is France. Of course everyone in the top ten has a chance but I'll be mildly surprised if the Chinese don't win this thing.

Aug-11-14  Iskubadayb: By the way, I just want to mention Jayson's gutsy effort on holding the fort on fourth. :)
