EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Aug-12-14  SugarDom: Right <wordfanot>, Sambuev has a won over WEsley.
Aug-12-14  pinoymaster77: Yup, meron pa sa youtube yung 'tuneup' nila Sambuev vs Wesley some years back. Pero now eh 2528 sya so maybe past his peak na but dangerous...
Aug-12-14  ceedee: did WIM-Elect Jan Jodilyn Fronda clinched her 2nd WGM norm?

she already met the three criteria needed to achieve her WGM norm. 1.) she already faced an IM, and 3 WGM. 2.) her opponents' average ELO rating is 2107
3.) her performance rating is 2274 after 9-rounds. (her first opponent doesn't count due to walkover)

she got 6.5 points after playing 9 rounds.

Aug-12-14  pinoymaster77: May nag text chess pren na 'Polgar retiring is BIG news' !? Nung unang dating eh si Susan? But was thinking it can't be since Spice program is on a roll, but could she be retiring while at the peak?

Yun pala si Judit Polgar from competitive chess. She's in good company though with World Champ Magnus Carlsen, Russia's Vlad Kramnik, Ukraine's Ivanchuy reeling from a couple of losses. Halos kapantay pa nga daw natin ang Norway Team A nila Magnus and Agdestein after 10 rounds!

But don't look now, with China's pivotal win vs France last night eh SOLO lead pa din sila! GM Yu got the pivotal win in Bd3. They're doing this without 1 of their Geniuses in Wang Hao, Li Chao and Bu who scored well for China in his last outing. Yang TOP 8 nilang yan eh good for 2 strong Olympiad teams, dun ang focus ng logistics nila.

Isa pa ay maaring best performance ever by a Pinoy ang resulta nya w/ a minimum of 3 games!

Aug-12-14  wordfunph: <Iskubadayb: Bago maglaro si bradidik sa 23rd Oly e training camp muna kami nyan. :)>

hakhak! ayos sa parting shots :) Sama kami dyan, master Isku.

Aug-12-14  wordfunph: this I would like to share to all, my most unforgettable and HAPPIEST moment in my chess life..

The 2014 Bubuli55 Fan’s Day:

Go Bubz! Go Eugene!

Aug-12-14  dunkenchess: No words to speak dahil as sobrang galak ibabaw ng panalo. Contemplating.
Aug-13-14  pinoymaster77: Nice sharings! Blessing nga na nakasama ko si wordfun nang maaga papunta dun sa Newport and becoming a witness / participant.

Sa Ingles eh to describe bubuli's reactio n eh MESMERIZED, o for the bagets eh STAR STRUCK ! ahehe

NICE dinner ha, sayang yung mga nagsabi at di nakapunta, dami tuloy naiuwi kasama natin, what a SUMPTOUS dinner, thanks again bubuli55, at sana di naman every 4 years, but EVERY 2 YEARS naman !

Aug-13-14  pinoymaster77: Pero sorry to break the AFGM nostalgic trip early, anywway kasama na diN AFGM since kasama sa team.

Kaya sana pagpalain ang teams natin tomorrow with a FINAL ROUND win, and break na yun stretch in the recent Olympiads when our teams lost in the final round.

KAYA yan, GMs Ino and JP have to hold sa top, then puntos tayo sa BABA.

GO TEAM PILIPINAS, UTAK at PUSO !

Aug-13-14  bubuli55: Ubosh tayo dyan < wordz >. Talagang surprise yon. Hindi ko alam ang ginagawa ko. Twaylaytson sa sobrang tuwa. Salamat! Salamat!!!
Aug-13-14  bubuli55: Nandito na ang last round. Krusyal rawd. Sana fab 4 ang laynap. Gudlak PHIL teams.
Aug-13-14  spawn2: Yup <wordfunph> kala ko aatakihin si <bubuli55> hahaha I also noticed the way bro bubz looked ke Alamat when we were having dinner. I have been privileged to be with AFGM on several occasions and I have witnessed people looked at Legend in the same manner: )

But yung first salvo ang talagang unforgettable: )

With regard to Team Pinas, tama si word..wala na tayong mahihiling pa.

- 22nd appearance of GM Torre
- the team went to Tromso despite the threat to their safety - They fought valiantly in every round

Whatever the result of the last round tomorrow, Salamat ng Marami Team Pinas..pinakaba..pinapuyat at pinasaya nyo kami dito sa Lupang Sinilangan.

Aug-13-14  spawn2: GM Torre's Olympiad journey should not stop in Tromso, Norway. Two years away lang ang next Olympiad kaya mabilis lang yan. We have to convince him that the journey must continue: )

Parang kailan lang in 2010, GM Torre matched GM Portisch's record, 2012 broke it and ngayon 2014 extended his lead. I can again wait for another 2 years.

Aug-13-14  Iskubadayb: Rest day ba ngayon, mga bradidik?
Aug-13-14  kardopov: Wala palang laro ngayon. Go for the win team Philippines!
Aug-13-14  manorchy: To have a record run is good as it is, but if one tries to push it further just for the sake of the record itself, and doing it to the detriment of the whole team's performance, then this whole national pride and glory thing just comes out as a facade for personal gain.

But there could be another reason for his possible inclusion in future teams - the scarcity of finding worthy chess talents (or the lack of proper chess development infrastructure) of this generation.

Aug-13-14  spawn2: <Master Isku>

Rest day..tomorrow huling sultada kaya pwede matulog ng maaga tonight in prep for the vigil tomorrow:)

Aug-13-14  Iskubadayb: Salamat, Jaime.

Sandals. :)

Aug-13-14  wordfunph: <restycbull> 2.5-1.5 for PHI taya ko uli buhok ko :)
