EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Aug-13-14  spawn2: <To have a record run is good as it is, but if one tries to push it further just for the sake of the record itself, and doing it to the detriment of the whole team's performance, then this whole national pride and glory thing just comes out as a facade for personal gain. But there could be another reason for his possible inclusion in future teams - the scarcity of finding worthy chess talents (or the lack of proper chess development infrastructure) of this generation.> GM Torre gained his place in the 2014 Philippine Team by winning the BOGM 2014 tournament. No special treatment (automatic seeding) but pure hardwork and talent.

For the past two Olympiads (2012 and 2014) he participated in the Battle of the GMs to try and qualify and play for the country. If I remember correctly, he needed to win five (5) straight games in BOGM 2012 to have the chance to make his 21st appearance.

For the 2016 Olympiad, I hope he will play in the qualifying tourney once again:)

Aug-13-14  spawn2: <guys, last round games to start at 6pm Manila time.>

Kailangan pala mag-undertime!

2016: Baku, Azerbaijan
2018: Batumi, Georgia

Aug-13-14  Iskubadayb: 6 am pala dito ang umpisa ng last round. Gising na ko nyan pero I'll definitely miss the start. Abutin ko pa ang late opening o early mid, pero deretsong na from there. I'll try to focus sa laro ng mga bradidik natin instead of window shopping sa bawat paninda. It's not a promise, though. :)
Aug-13-14  bubuli55: It's a matter of half glass full. There are positives to the state of PHI chess.

Our women players are the strongest ever. There's an existing infrastructure to the grassroots.

We have the most number of GMs today. We were able to fill in the gaps when other players could not make this trip. That's a good sign. This team has a very good chance to barge into the top 30. That's like placing in the top 20 before the break up of USSR. That's very good.

AFGM did not have any qualms when he was not chosen to play in the Olympiad. He went as a coach to help out the team. And he is playing very well in this Olympiad. Consider yourself lucky. He has more Olympiads to go.

it's going to be a rumble, blood for blood and flesh for flesh. No more tomorrow, ubosch kung ubosch. Arriba Pilipinas!

Aug-13-14  wordfunph: let's hope for the best for GM Gonzales to hold GM Sambuev sa quatro - that will be the key of the match.

Medyo alala ako ng konti nung una dahil 3 sunod na laro ay nakakapagod pag team play, pero dahil sa rest day pala before the last round ay tama lang na maglaro si Master Jay. Walang talo yan!

bosh!

Aug-13-14  bubuli55: Sir Iskubz. Grassroots is a stretch. But I've seen grade school girls from different regions play team tourneys. I hope that is happening thru out the country. :)

And of course there is always room for improvement.

Other than that, we good bro. :)
Aug-13-14  Iskubadayb: Maganda yan, Bubz. Let's talk about it after the oly. Bilang proud ex Asian powerhouse, we want better. Imagine, China will win this thing... they should!
Time consuming masyado. :)
Aug-13-14  bubuli55: < wordz > kung ako nandoon, ako ang pipitik nung kabilang tenga. Ahehe
Aug-13-14  Iskubadayb: Talk about a federation president and still playing, naalala ko ang kwento ni Pocamps. So, he graced the opening and all, pero dahil wala naman siyang engagements e naglaro na rin siya. The dude won the Oslo Open! He was very proud of it. :)
Aug-13-14  bubuli55: Sir Iskubz. Sa totoo lang. Pwede kang gumawa ng libro. Matagal ko nang navanggit yan.
Aug-13-14  Iskubadayb: Believe me, I thought about it for a long time... but it is quite complicated... not the writing, that too, but mostly the mechanics of me. Gulo no?
